My biggest take away is the listing of the Joy-Con straps. I had heard those were stupidly seperate.

I wish we got Japan's cool red box.

As an option or preorder bonus, maybe. But commercially, it's much better to put the console on it and show the consumer what it actually is. Just my opinion. I like the red box more too, but only because I know what's inside already.

That main image they use in the US and Europe is a bad choice if you ask me. You can barely tell that it is a handheld/tablet like device. And the joycons in that state, easily the ugliest part of the hardware, is the main thing you see.

I can imagine that someone not in the know will think this is a new way to control a wii-u. (Unless they see the back of the box)

It looks nice, but there really isn't a lot of information on it. Feels weird to complain about that, though.

I don't agree, There's nothing that mentions Wii, they've changed the colour scheme too.

The Wii U confusion was due to a number of reasons, no less because they had Wii in the name, but then the reveal mentioned Controller about 50 times. Nintendo acknowledged that marketing for the Wii U was confusing

I like it.

But it's funny that that's the configuration they highlight for the front of the box: Switch docked, TV lurking in the background, most normal looking controller configuration.

That's a sexy, clean design. There's probably some study that says American's like to see the product they are buying on the box that is trapping us in this ugly box hell.

You don't have to be American for that. That box is exclusive to the jp. online store, so it's not like you have to judge the contents of the box by what's on it. First time you see it is after you ordered it.

I think we will see both sides alternated in store displays.

Isn't the front of the box the Switch in portable mode with one Joy-Con half removed?

Edit: Looks like they highlight both options by using the front and the back. Pretty damn slick if you ask me. Normally the back of a box like this is home to all the informational stuff.

The main reason why the sleek simple redbox is only on MyNintendo Store is because those are for customers who already know the product they're buying and want a sweet box. The normal retail box INSTANTLY shows a mainstream market consumer what they're in for.

I think a lot of their messaging so far has kinda indicated that they want this thing to start this thing off positioned as a home console. Mainly I'm thinking about all the times they've reaffirmed that 3DS isn't getting replaced yet. Maybe that's why the box in Japan is different though, might be more focused on handheld there or something.

As far as being docked though, the hand pictured is nicely ambiguous. Can't really tell if they just put it into the dock, or if they're just taking it out. Either way, the image to me conveys a bit of motion there, so hopefully the idea gets communicated to shoppers.

i don't get the hard-on for the Japanese box.

As some have pointed out, it's not the box that will sit on retail shelves in Japan.
And a retail box needs to show the product. Even minimalist-as-fuck Apple puts their product front and center on their packaging. A shoe box won't sell a 300 bucks piece of hardware.

As for the display box in the OP, i like the front, i'm unsure about the back. I wouldn't have minded them putting more emphasis on the 2 other "modes" (kickstand and handheld). Right now, the back doesn't show a mode you can game in, but rather the transitional phase. The kickstand is nowhere to be seen.

Why is the Japenese box in English?

Japan frequently uses English words for products and signs. A significant chunk of the language uses loan words (similar to cognates) derived from English. While loan words are most often written in katakana, sometimes for Japanese products you see English words written in English.
