4 regions in I've already placed this game above all the Dark Souls games (never played DeS) and on the same page as Bloodborne.
I've always been hesitant to call Dark Souls as a favorite ARPG of mine because the scale/potential of combat in that game is too limited for my liking, and I'm not one to gush over every placed stones and broken painting- good for when I'm watching lore videos in my free time, not interested when I'm playing. The theme of Bloodborne and the trick weapons puts it higher than the usual Souls game for me. I do enjoy building my character in a variety of ways though!
Nioh improves on the things that I enjoy playing Souls games for- it has a deeper combat system and extensive character customization (just not creation), it suffers from variety shortage but that's an easier fix than a flawed foundation.
And really the more I play it the more I realize that the Souls mechanics that they straight borrowed are not as deep and extensive as the Diablo and Ninja Gaiden mechanics. It's all surface level.... with one exception and that is the Ki gauge.
