The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Preview Thread

I never really played the game but that boss battle looks boring af (within today's standards)
I won't defend it because its outdated as hell but, this was one big epic battle.

The buildup to Ganondorf was masterful. From all the boss battles to the cutscenes to ruining Hyrule and finally capturing Zelda. You then fight him on the now classic voleyball game. He coughs blood and destroys the castle!

Finally you thought you beat him. When he transforms and the letters GANON appear, the atmosphere is amazing and the music as well. Zelda and navi help you and Link delivers the final blow,Ganondorf is beating but he swears to comd back.

It was mind blowing at the time.
still better than Twilight Princess

Probably the game doesn't let you be 'comboed' to death. So the same type of wake-up invincibility that every Zelda game has after being hit, it just doesn't stop the physics engine from ragdolling you around for a while.

Oh I see. Are the ennemies affected by that mechanic too ?

For anyone who has seen a lot of spoilery footage, without actually spoiling anything can you tell me if you've seen a lot of varied landscapes? I've watched a lot of footage too and I've mostly seen grasslands, but is there any desert footage? If so how does it look? Any super duper snowy arctic-like footage? Anyone sailing on the ocean? Any dense forests?

It's also very likely they've raised some settings like draw distance and LoD for docked mode as those things are far more noticeable on a large TV screen than a small handheld screen.

I've seen canyons, swamps, and forests. They look really nice.

It makes sense that we would see a lot of plains since the press can only show footage from their first five hours in the game which means that we are naturally seeing quite a lot of the plateau and the immediate area surrounding it.

Couple of questions some of you might be able to answer

1.) Have the previews mentioned anything about the side missions and what they consist of? I'm hoping they are not just fetch quests and actually have some side stories that break away from the main game

2.) Can you use your shield as a weapon if you have no weapon selected? Captain America style

Sorry but does anyone know the above?

Yeah I'm not surprised at all and we obviously know there is quite a lot of variation in the landscapes (based on all the trailers) but I was just curious if they looked as amazing as I was hoping.

Side quests are under embargo but from what we've heard by people who have seen spoilers from outlets who don't care about said embargo, the side quests have a LOT of personality and are very engaging. I don't know more than that.

Regarding shields, I haven't seen any options to attack with or throw a shield, though you can "toss" any item in your inventory, like if you have a metal shield in a thunderstorm you can "hold" it via the inventory and throw it at an enemy to attract a lightning bolt.

Does anyone know if they're are dense forests in the game? I would love to seamlessly go from a vast savannah like field, to a dark, mysterious forest where the trees are blocking the sun save for shafts of light here and there

Wonder if lost woods made it in

100% yes, like in the Faron region, for example

All footage I've seen has been restricted to the same three connected provinces (with the exception of Arkezz who did a South>North run through but sped it up and had a lot of jumpcuts). We've seen some of the more mountainous areas, plain grasslands, some rolling hills, a couple beaches, two towns (both with dramatically different environments), seen quite a host of forests.

Given that they were only allowed to show footage from their first five hours of gameplay (and even then, were embargoed on towns/NPCs/plot stuff/weapons)it genuinely seemed like no one had even had the time to get too far out from central Hyrule field.

Wouldn't worry about dense forests at all - just from those early gameplay maps, I found one forest that I won't name thats close to the size of the entire Great Pleateau, and another forest that was actually ~110% of the size of the Great Pleateau (that we actually got a very brief glimpse of by a video that broke embargo a handful of times). And there were definitely more on the maps (and this is only from a 4 region + plateau map).

GameXplain said that the sidequests were good, but they weren't allowed to go into the specifics outside of the shrines and Korok seed puzzles.

I have no clue about your second question.

Thanks, i was hoping the side quests would be meatier affairs than your usually fetch quests

Thats cool about shields in the storms, they have thought of everything it seems

Has there been any statements on how long the game will take to finish the main storyline and all of the side quests?

I remember aonuma saying something like "noone at nintendo has 100%'d the game, I guess it's possible but that would take long"

not exactly good news to me, since I am a zelda completionist so I hope most of it is fun at least.

no, I was asking if there are in the video. My fault.

Oh no clue. The title of the video said spoilers so I jumped to the end in order to check out what the seeds do.

How do you get the
Korok seeds? Just finding random Koroks?

You solve environmental puzzles in the world. Here's an example of one I saw in a video. In a graveyard there are two graves with offering baskets next to each other. One of them has an apple in it and the other is empty. If you put an apple in the empty basket then a Korok will appear and give you a seed.

I reckon they were developing for parity between handheld and docked, but then added the boost mode to the handheld specs a few weeks ago, because of which handheld mode suddenly pushed more frames.
It runs at a lower resolution in handheld mode. Things usually run smoother at lower resutions.

l caught a few glimpses of landscapes that immediately made me think "yep, Monolith Soft definitely worked on that game".

Anybody willing to guess the metacritic/opencritic this game is going to get? Something tells me it is going to be around 93-95.

Im just as hyped as you are for the game, fam but can we not do the metacritic stuff here? Its clear from previews and videos that the game will be amazeballs for most people. Cant we leave it at that?

But if score discussing is what the masses want, than I will gladly digress.

hopefully by the time im done with horizon, mass effect and persona 5 it will easier to buy a switch, this game looks simply phenomenal, regardless of hardware limitations Nintendo always knows how to make amazing looking games from an art standpoint

Previewers have been wondering what's the point since they're much slower than horses, but I bet there are some cliffs this can scale that horses can't

Some things don't even really need a point. This game has so much detail, some of it straight up unnoticed and maybe won't be noticed for another month or so, that some things can just be cool for the sake of being cool.

But yeah, you're probably right about that. Hopefully we can ride mountain goats too.
