Gamekult editor on graphical differences between the Zelda Switch/Wii U version

People panic, but its not as bad. So there may be some frame drops and obviously it won't look as smooth. People said the same thing about the 360 version of Titanfall and I thought it was just as good as the Xbox One version.

There's been streams and videos of Wii U copies today and they look fine enough. Definitely more than fine enough to avoid the $300 surcharge for a Switch if you're not interested in the console outside Zelda.

Nvidia flops are not AMD flops.

Yup, Switch docked is also 393gflops. When the more modern GPU, much faster CPU and 3x RAM with double bandwidth is added in Switch when docked is probably close to 4x Wii U in real world performance (Fast Racing goes from Dynamic 720p/30fps to Dynamic 1080p/60fps with better visuals in 4 player mode on Switch and that's a launch game with a tiny budget).

In french here.

Rough translation courtesy of Coffinhal:

Strictly talking about the tutorial area :
Strong aliasing
Worse sharpness
Serious framerate drops
Visual issues with cutscenes and when getting out of the inventory
Too many actions (using a power+rotating the camera = "framerate death")
5 sec loading time when you get back to the Home menu
He installed every patch available
The plateau on Switch is bad framerate related and it gets better after, but in the plateau it's nowhere near what the Wii U version is

Oh damn, this sounds awful. :( In all honesty it does seem contradictory to what I've seen in the leaked vids today, though. The visuals are obviously a bit rougher than the Switch version, but the framerate honestly seemed fine for the most part (just a few minor dips here and there). I'm not sure what area of the game the video I watched took place in (it was the opening/tutorial area), but maybe this plateau section is just a really taxing part of the game? Both versions seem to struggle with it, apparently.

This is like complaining that MGSV runs worse on PS3 than PS4. It's a very ambitious game and at least it's actually releasing on Wii U. Leading up to release several gaffers speculated the Wii U version was cancelled.

That's bullshit. It was announced for the wiiu before anyone knew the switch existed. I'll wait for the df comparison before I cancel the preorder amazon isn't delivering on day 1 anyway.

I'm at my friend's house right now and he said to us
"wait a moment I have a surprise for you guys".
Then he brings us to his room, turns on his WiiU and boots fucking BotW on it. I didn't even knew it had leaked, what the hell. I saw this thread and asked him to press the home button and go back, and it did took quiiite a while to go back to the game. Although that may be because he's using a pirated/leaked copy, I don't know. It's quite weird to see him playing a game that's not even out yet. Can't wait until the game is released here and I can buy my copy, fucking hell. I'll block him on Facebook so he won't spoil the fuck out of me.

Just want to add that the original tweet also says that nothing is displayed on the Gamepad while playing on the TV and that nothing is displayed on the TV while playing on the Gamepad. I think Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze did that as well.

The fact BotW runs on Wii U at all is a miracle. The fact it looks very similar to the Switch version is just as amazing.

Switch is several times more powerful than Wii U. The fact it runs smoother on Switch isn't a surprise.

It sucks when you remember that the game was aimed for Wii U first originally, then had multiple delays AND the original footage we have all seen may or may not have been a bit of a fib.

So the Wii U retains its status as the prime port hand-me-downs of games designed primarily for other platforms.

I see what you're trying to do, but it doesn't work when the game was made for the Wii U. Regardless, still getting the Wii U version. Won't let a few frame drops get me down.

Are people really shocked, that a game looks better and runs better on stronger and more modern hardware? They probably will squeeze everything out of the wii u it got.

His first tweet is, "unfortunately [for Wii U owners] this version is an incredible ad for the Switch".

The plateau is the most demanding place though, it gets better after it.

If I have to buy a new system to play Zelda when I bought the last nintendo system to play Zelda then I will just say fuck it and play The Last Gaurdian again.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
So GAF's worst nightmare, but still perfectly playable for normal people... got it.

I kid, I kid.

Or do I...

Still want to see the DF analysis.

You're not gonna play Zelda on Wii U due to performance problems, so instead you're gonna play... The Last Guardian? Lolol

I get the impression some folks here really want the Wii U version to suck to help justify their day one Switch purchase.

Nah, no way nintendo is gonna bork the version of the game that people invested in 5 years ago to sell their new console for extra profits.....

Nintendo haven't borked anything. The Wii U version would run exactly the same had the Switch not existed. Switch is simply more powerful so the game runs smoother on it.

It will be interesting to see if someone can match that original reveal of Link sitting overlooking the village. Once the Guardian attacked it definitely looked pre rendered or part of an "in engine" cut scene though.

The grass in the final game is incredible, great in house tech.

I think you got the wrong impression. It's a thread about a journalist who got Zelda on Wii U and the Switch for free, to make a review. And while comparing the two versions, he says one has more technical issues than the other.

Yeah, i'm not talking about the journalist's comments.

People are talking out of their ass when they say Wii U owners should be happy this game releases on the system. People bought a Wii U for that game years ago especially for that game. Back then the Switch was still a wet dream.

Crippled Wii U version makes sense. It's an easy way to compel ppl to buy into Nintendo's next-gen hybrid.
The would have added exclusive HD Rumble for that. They haven't for "platform parity", they said :-/. It's already good to see an ambitious game like that running on this old Wii U hardware. The lack of Ram especially, makes things complicated.

Here's the first 15 minutes of the Wii U version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsciL21R9bk

I looked through it briefly and the framerate seems alright.

Wow, looks close enough to the Switch version, resolution aside. They seemed to have tightened up the LOD distance to be closer to the Switch version as well. I remember from back at E3 you couldn't see the lava streaming down Death Mountain from the opening scene when compared to the Switch version.

I'll be getting it on Wii U since I just bought a cheap 32GB Wii U a couple of days ago.

The performance here is definitely... spotty. Should be perfectly playable for most, though.

Graphically it looks fine aside from some pretty bad pop-in. I'd say if you're choosing between this version or a $360 investment you have no other motivation to make, this will be just fine.

I'm watching a stream with rain and river water and the fps are stable to my eyes. I already watched like 1 hour and I think is totally playable/enjoyable.

Oh. Yikes. Well, hopefully no one planning on playing the Wii U version is a stickler for performance and IQ. And hopefully it isn't as bad as it sounds.

Talking about the home menu delay, I wonder if this game is somehow running in a reduced OS mode like how 3DS does for a few games like Smash. It might explain how a game like this is running on Wii U's hardware.
The difference between 3DS and Wii U OS was massive even if they both reserved 50% for the OS. I can't imagine BoTW using so much as 512 mb more.

The only problem with that theory is it goes against common sense if you know Nintendo.
There are other ways of making the Switch version more attractive, even besides the performance advantage.
Like delaying the Wii U version a month or something.
The Switch is easily more powerful than the Wii U so it looking and running better is common sense moreso than Nintendo sabotaging their own revered IP.

Is that part at 7:52 intentional combat lag or a drop in FPS? Because it looks bad.

Slowdown at 7:54. To be fair to the Wii U, he's fighting where the Switch (docked) had some slowdown aswell. The engine seems to struggles to render that sprawling direct view of the volcano from the starting area.
