Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

Oh goodness, all this Nishiki posting reminds me how much Kiryu loves his kyodai and how his lively interjections for Nishiki's Judgment just has him saying "Nishiki!" "N-I-S-I-K-I. Nishiki!" even if the singer is the bartender.

where do you buy the shotgun again? actually where do i buy a 9mm for the sidequest.

beating the game, i never brought a weapon. =)
If they're not on sale, be sure to send agents to areas where shotgun/handguns can be found. Also, cycle through agents until you find with the highest stats for finding guns. Usually it'll read something like this - "shotgun 30%"

Arena grind so we meet again .... I hope it's not as awful as 5.

Theoretically even then it's only half as bad with 2 people instead of 4 x_X

Mahjong doesn't make any sense and it's my last thing till platinum, I thought I had a full straight but apparently I didn't have shit aaaaaaaaaah

Finished Ch. 11...wow.
It's kind of amazing how this game can take a character you didn't even care that much about and make their death hit you in the gut. I was really starting to warm up to Nishitani and ready to go kick some ass with him, and then the rug gets pulled. Played like a goddamn fiddle!

Finished last night...

Was my first Yakuza game and man what a ride.

I really enjoyed the story, character, and world. It was the first game since the Witcher 3 I've played where the side quests really engaged me more so than felt like bloat to just extend the overall playtime.

I'll be taking a look at the remake coming out later in the year, but after an enjoyable lengthy trek in Yakuza 0,i might hold off a bit on it until I'm craving to come back.

Anyways great game and it was just unique and fun, and one of my favourites I've played in a while.

On chapter 15 now. With all the side stories + both business mini games finished I'm just focusing on the story now. The second half of the game is really intense.

This is definitely one of the best of the series imo (though I haven't played Ishin). I love what they did with Majima. I love Kiryu as always, but Majima is just incredible in this. Makes me appreciate his presence in the rest of the series even more now.

Really can't wait for Y6 now.

Many stand out moments so far, the ones which stick out particularly, in no particular order:

Shrink-wrapped Dream. All of it.

God Hands' sleeve tattoos

Kaz getting all serious/hyper re postcards/radio

Getting TWO stuffed Mega Drive toys for the price of one

Finished the main story last night. Ending felt really rushed and I completely lost all the strands to the increasingly convoluted plot.

Decent entry to the series, but 4 remains my favourite of the ones I've played. Interested to try the remaster.

Its nowhere near as long or difficult as it was in 5. Heck, you can even drop the difficulty on the game down to easy to speed through it even quicker!

Yeah I noticed it's like 10 times faster. For anything platinum relevant.

That said lul the Amon fight jesus that's some cheaply designed garbage. Never change yakuza never change. I still love you xD.
Edit: I beat it on the second try I'm more referring to the in my opinion really awful encounter design where the difficulty is all about stupid stunlocks and stagger instead of having a good fight. A thing I never really liked about the series but I'll put up with it.

Yeah, the stun lock thing has been present from Yakuza 1, its how I beat the second phase of Amon back in the day (light sabers for the win!) but its a pain when you get stuck in it yourself. On the one hand Amon could really be designed so he isn;t so cheap, but its par of the course now, I expect him to be a utter pain to beat. His fight in 6 was pretty fun though, actually less cheap than usual as well!

Regarding Amon. As Kiryu, I think I
used the Dragon golf club (not sure name) which easily knocked him down and let me use heat actions

Majima was super easy once I realized
the helicopter drops pills that give temporary invincibility

Finished it.

Kinda rushed it because I felt burnt out, but then again I've always played Yakuza games that way. I'm only here for the story and it was great. Looking forward to Kiwami.

One thing I didn't like though was that
this is called 0, but Kiryu and Goro never even meet, yet that's like the first thing in Y1 that happens and they know eachother there.

edit: guess I spoke too soon, lol.

I'm ready for Kiwami already. Hope it's not too far off.

It's summer IIRC, so between june and september. It's a good thing they spaced Y0 and Kiwami because they use the same battle system and playing too much Yakuza at once leads to burnout.

So we get around 6 months between each game (Y0 - Kiwami - Y6) is a great pacing for releases.

Is there a reason why a mahjong hand like this doesn't work? Infinite Mahjong pocalypse will never end.

actually you have a triplet in there. i think the only way you could score is by concealing it and declaring riichi

Telephone club was hilarious the first time, but then I had to do it close to a dozen times to get all the substories. It is bad and I hate it. :|

so triplets aren't optimal to be with the 3-straights?
Triplets of your seat wind / the round wind / dragons are worth 1 han regardless of open/close.

Your hand could have potentially scored with 'tanyao / all simples' if the straight on the far right took a 6 instead of a 9. Also the kuitan rule needs to be enabled for that to be allowed with an open hand.

Doing Kiriyu's business is a bit of a slog. At least his sub-stories are still glorious. Is there any way to beat
Miracle at dancing(i thought it was kind of awesome that he just demolishes you).

Still trying to think how the two plots come together and the only thing i can guess is that
Makoto owns the Empty Lot somehow.

Finished yesterday what a ride.
There are certain things I wish were done better like always but the overall package just packs so much soul and charm it's hard to not just wave the shortcomings away.

For story
I really liked Majima's story line and getting insight in how he got to be this way.
I was super happy to have unlocked the 4th style as well for him before the finale cause it would reinforce him going over the edge so much after the cutscenes and then having him dart around the the battlefield like a crazy dagger torpedo. I felt his other fighting styles are a bit more restrained wouldn't have fit the after the cutscenes in the finale as well.

Kiryu for me was a bit too similar to how he is even all those years later. Even with the focus on his naivete it was a bit too subtle and more often than not the price he paid for it never felt like his own fault. It was more about him coming to grips with choosing this path while not compromising himself in a way it felt too safe for me.
I would have preferred for them to go the albeit more clichee way of having him be more wild, unforgiving and rowdy in his youth and him making the transformation into the honorable straight laced Kiryu we know. But he felt a bit too unchanging for my tastes in 0.

The substories were superb. Honestly some of the best in general. Also loved the humor sooooo much. I doubt I'll play a funnier game this year.
Gameplay wise, well Yakuza is a series that could gain insane improvements by focusing on usability more. There are like a 100 little things to nag about, like there not being an insta purchase option for skills this becomes a huge issue when you unlock limit breaker for the 4th style it's pretty dumb to have to sit through the slog of having to purchase everything and having the 2-3 second wind up until it happens. Or the way you access it to begin with is so clunky.
Such issues are amplified especially when you're trying for the plat like the wind up to try certain mini games again is so unnecessarily long but oh well it's still a game great enough it makes me want to go for it so what can I say but that I hope they'll iron that stuff out at some point.

I finished the game last week, did as many substories as I could (80+/100) and finished both businesses completely. Really entertaining game and the story was amazing, the change of tone between substories and the main plot was really well done.

Great game in general and can't wait to play kiwami and six, hopefully they'll make a collection with the other games as well.

Finished Ch. 12, that
Sera fight was pretty cheap to due his unblockable grabs and just not a very fun boss fight. I wish we'd gotten to see more about him, I don't really understand his motives, but maybe I'll learn more.
Started in to Ch. 13, or 14? and that
car chase is some straight bullshit and not fun. Mostly due to the bad aiming precision on the thumbstick, but also just the endless number of cars that wear you down. I retried it like six times and finally gave up for the night.

After having finished the story last week, i've been busy mopping up side content in premium adventure. Over the weekend i played Majima's Cabaret Club mini game and i can't believe i skipped it during my main playthrough. It's actually fun and i kinda love it. I think Akiyama's hostess club management mini game in Y4 put me off of this initially, but this is so much more engaging! I powered through it and now i only need to finish the training for a couple platinum hostesses and acquire a 4th gold hostess, the dancing goddess, which brings me to the disco mini game.

OK, either the timing in this mini game is punishingly strict, or my TV has bigger input lag than i thought. I tried doing all the songs on easy and i only managed to beat 2, the rest i just kept failing prompt after prompt, like a dozen at a time. I was in disbelief, i couldn't even hit some by accident. Is the timing really supposed to be this precise even on easy? I even tried labeling the hdmi port as PC, but that did nothing for me. I have never had big problems beating the karaoke requirements, batting cages, and the like in any of the games, but this is on a whole another level. Right now it feels like this will be the biggest stumbling block on my way to the platinum. :/

Stayed up until 3am to finish the game. The story was just so gripping that I couldn't stop until I got to the end.

I might hold off on Kiwami since I played the original. I need to play 4 and 5 before 6 comes out.

You don't have to press the input just as it appears but you have to wait until it goes within the square borders.

What does "round" wind means? I thought it meant the wind of the opposing seat (W if you're E, N if you're S and so on) but after a few games I'm not sure anymore.

Also, does the game ask you when you can declare Riichi? There was a game in which I was sure I only missed one tile to complete my hand but I couldn't.

I knew nothing about Mahjong before Y0 but I love it. It's my favorite minigame.

I have a kinda similar issue on the normal and hard modes for the disco mini-game. For me, I find the timing indicated by the overlapping squares to be really ambiguous and I too struggled with it compared to things like karaoke (plus I love rhythm games and play quite a few of them so found it doubly frustrating). What I started doing is looking at the order of inputs and their proximity, ignored the animation that tries to help you with the timing and just played along with the rhythm of the song rather than what was being communicated on screen, if that make sense? As in, follow the beat of the song and just refer to the button presses as a guide - most of the time the button presses correspond to well signposted stuff in the song and the better you know the song, the easier it becomes. That's how I've been getting through it anyway.

Started on the climax battles to kill time and man they are total garb.... urgh...
I'm getting through them but they're sooooo not fun and just highlighting the worst aspects of Yakuza for "difficulty". Pure frustration....

Since I've played games like Souls or similar I really have hard time waving stuff like this away as "challenging". It's just total cheapness some of these challenges I just get through with luck and not really learning anything.

Thanks. I know that, it's just that i'm completely failing the timing most of the time. It doesn't help that there's no perfect/good/bad distinction like in karaoke, either you hit it or you dont, and i mostly don't. Maybe it'll just require a lot of practice, but what got me was that i did ok at a couple of songs and even beat my Cabaret Club hostesses on their training dates, while completely and utterly failing at the rest of the songs when i tried them solo, not even getting to a 1000 points. XD

At the bolded, that's exactly my issue, i feel like i'm hitting them right according to the animations, but then it just says "bad" time after time. About your advice, that makes sense, i will try going about it that way, thanks!

I quite enjoyed
the car chase section...though, partly because as soon as you got thrown the gun in the backseat I was thinking "they aren't seriously going to throw in a fucking rails shooter section out of the blue?" and then I remembered I was playing Yakuza 0 and anything can happen! I found the helicopter section with the rocket spam fairly frustrating but felt they were pretty generous on the car's health and I didn't have to re-start.

I'm currently at Ch 15 and the flurry of twists and turns to the main story in quick succession has been really enjoyable to me. Some seemed telegraphed, some seemed absolutely shocking, but it's a fantastic ride either way. I found the
death of Tachibana to be really affecting and despite it having some fairly ridiculous coincidences, have found the Makoto/Tachibana family-loss element
of the plot really engaging. Similarly, the inclusion of
Little Asia and the brief exploration of the experience of Chinese migrants has been interesting
, though I wish that was delved into a little further.

Still really enjoying the game, though was actually really happy when I realised so many of the mini-games were gambling and/or based on card/tile games that I have very little knowledge of. I don't have the inclination to learn new rules for mini-games at the moment and have a hard enough time completing the story with all of the (incredible) sub-stories, businesses and rhythm games etc. so it was actually nice to see some stuff I knew I wouldn't be distracted by!

Have taken tomorrow off work to finish the game ready for Nier being released on Friday and I'm incredibly excited both to see how the main story ends, but also for Premium Adventure mode so that I can focus on the businesses.

Word - I found it pretty odd so it's reassuring to know it's not just me who found it weird, considering the other rhythm based stuff doesn't give me any real issue.

Good luck with it, gets easier the more you know the songs and weirdly I've found it kinda satisfying playing along with the song's rhythm rather than explicitly trying to follow the squares for timing. Feels more 'natural'!

It's summer IIRC, so between june and september. It's a good thing they spaced Y0 and Kiwami because they use the same battle system and playing too much Yakuza at once leads to burnout.

Truth be told, this happened to me with both Yakuza 4 and 5 alone.

0 is the first game were I actually managed to finish the story...it helps that you only have two playable characters and you switch every two chapters.

In the other games, getting to the point were you'd switch to the next characters meant not being able to finish any of your current character's sidequests until the endgame/post game. So I tried to do everything before that point and eventually just gave up.

Speaking of, I'm almost done with both Real Estate and Cabaret Club, having only one more bad guy to take care of in both games and while I love them, I could've never done them in a single chapter like some people have here.

Edit: The Disco Dance minigame just suddenly clicked for me at one point. No steady improvement of my skills, it went from never hitting anything to getting extreme combos.

Ogita still kicked my ass a bunch of times, you're pretty much at the whims of the RNG with him.

Wait, so any wind will do? My wind just gives me more points? I'm talking about the standard hand "any tile combination + 3 dragons OR 3 winds" (prevalent winds is the name, iirc).

You need at least 1 han to go out. A triplet of any dragon or wind will net 1 han (or 2 han if it's your wind for that round)
