Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

Truth be told, this happened to me with both Yakuza 4 and 5 alone.

0 is the first game were I actually managed to finish the story...it helps that you only have two playable characters and you switch every two chapters.

In the other games, getting to the point were you'd switch to the next characters meant not being able to finish any of your current character's sidequests until the endgame/post game. So I tried to do everything before that point and eventually just gave up.

Speaking of, I'm almost done with both Real Estate and Cabaret Club, having only one more bad guy to take care of in both games and while I love them, I could've never done them in a single chapter like some people have here.

Edit: The Disco Dance minigame just suddenly clicked for me at one point. No steady improvement of my skills, it went from never hitting anything to getting extreme combos.

Ogita still kicked my ass a bunch of times, you're pretty much at the whims of the RNG with him.

Yeah. I almost got burned with the cabaret since I did almost everything at once.
In Kiryu Real State there's a story lock at least, you can't complete it once it opens. The cabaret you can finish as soon as it opens.

Also, the Disco minigame is addictive once it clicks. I adapted myself pretty well at it mostly because I play other rhythm games where guiding yourself by what's happening on the screen is a big mistake =P

I could never get into this series before, but what I have played of Zero is just clicking with me so far. I find it captivating for both it's hard-line seriousness and for it's hilarious Japanese humor. It's a good time for sure.

Does anyone know if the Yakuza series is profitable for Sega? Playing through 0, like they can't be too cheap to make and surely they take a year or 2 to create(?) and the game only seems to do relatively well in Japan.

Sega has an efficient pipeline set up for the Yakuza series. They benefit from being able to recycle a lot of assets and having a mature engine. I'm sure it does more than well enough in Japan alone. Localization is minimal so they likely reach break-even by selling a few dozen thousand copies. I wouldn't stress out about it. Sega isn't releasing these in the west as a charity.

The Yakuza games are a weird breed.

They're made, designed and sold specifically with the Japanese market in mind (recently starting expanding more towards Asia in general). They have insane amounts of asset reuse (I think one of the sword heat moves dates back to Yakuza 1 on the PS2!), but they still take the time to add new content on top (new cities, characters). The games are actually fairly successful in those markets but certainly not in the west (or at least, before 0 they weren't).

The one thing to keep in mind is that with each title, the amount of product tie-ins that they have as grown. Y5 had Ungodly amounts of product tie-ins but of course, this is one of the few series where real life products actually ADD to the authenticity rather than take the player out of the experience so they take as many as they can handle. I imagine that would definitely soften the blow.

Still pretty insane when you think about how big these games generally are, even with asset reuse. Their management and planning is God-Tier.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I don't mind the product tie-ins in games like this, I think it fits! But I was wondering because a lot of the good looking cutscenes I thought were very well-directed.

I can definitely see some stuff that might be from a generation or 2 behind, but I still think Yakuza 0 so far is a really impressive game.

Between BotW and Bloodborne, I have been playing Yakuza 0. Man I love how this game stands out because of the amazing story and its characters. I would love to just play chapter after chapter, because it is very exciting. But as I know myself, once I completed the story I am going to count it as done and won't touch it for a while. But I guess also that I will need to upgrade my characters and therefore I need money. Best way to make money is the cabaret and estate business. They are sort of fun, but in the long distance they feel like a drag. Should I continue the businesses or continue the story?

I wanted Kiryu's dragon tattoo'd to the back of my left hand but my coworkers tell me that would be extremely painful and too small scaled down for all the details to show.

Is there any way to beat
Miracle at dancing(i thought it was kind of awesome that he just demolishes you).

It's my understanding that you can't beat him- he has his own special title
"King Of Pop"
as he demolishes you.

Hell, there's even a ton of promotional advertising for Soft On Demand, one of Japan's major porn producers. All the tie-ins probably bring in more money than the US does.

This is the sort of tattoo that you would get done over a few years and spend thousands of dollars on.

What is up with all the people spoiling the bosses and other plot stuff on youtube thumbnails. I get it their trying to promote the game, love the series like all of us, but putting the names is totally unnecessary. I thankfully finished the game without spoiling too much, but a lot of 6 is spoiled just for looking at karaoke videos of zero.

yeah you're gonna just have to try and forget what you saw by next year.

I feel you, the youtube suggestions are absolutely godawful these days, and people's clickbaity images aren't helping.

I usually try to switch to incognito mode these days whenever I watch a Yakuza related video, just to be on the absolute safe side.

Finally pushed myself to let go of the real estate side quest and finish chapter 10. When the result screen popped up and all they gave me was a measly 75 million the only thing I could muster was

what???? why?

I will be getting a tattoo when I go to Osaka next month that will cover most of my upper arm. The artist said to expect it to take the whole day. I will also be paying $800-$1000 for it.

When you get a full back tattoo, they usually only work on it a little bit at a time, adding more details on each visit. That's why, in this game, Kiryu's tattoo doesn't have color and isn't filled in. It's just an outline. You schedule an appointment, usually months in advance, get part of it done, then you need to wait for it to heal.

Your back is pretty sensitive and it's going to hurt so you aren't going to want to do super long sessions anyway.

Also, in the Yakuza world, they typically do not use a tattoo gun. That's pretty stressful on the artist. Also, many of the more traditional, famous artists will choose your irezumi for you. You don't get to choose. Many yakuza probably go this route.

Man, you aren't living if you haven't earned enough to buy a few fighter jets.

Guys, I'm having a hard time catching a ghost koi with Majima. I know I need the "special bait" but can't find it anywhere and have no luck using the Dream Machines. Is there another way to get it?

Keep playing through the story, one scene in particular takes on a completely different context if you're swimming in billions thanks to Real Estate Royale ;)

Oh and be sure to get gold statues for Kiryu and Majima! You've earned it.

Those traditional Japanese tattoo artist are a dying breed though, right?

And where can I buy jets?!

A lot of the story already feels funny XD
Two biggest examples for me are
The Dojimas willing to spend a billion to buy the lot and when Tachibana spent the same amount to save you.

yeah man but I said I'm getting the tattoo on my HAND not my back lol and I wouldn't be getting it to rep actual Yakuza it would be to rep Kazuma Kiryu who's my favorite fictional character probably ever

Kiryu expressing shock and horror that Tachibana is in fact a cheapskate who is only willing to part with a meagre billion yen for his life when he just bought a 10 billion yen gold statue of himself while he himself is carrying a hundred billion yen, in cash, is forever my most treasured moment in the series (along with many others).

I forgot how slick Yakuza's installation screens since we didn't get one with 5 and 0 over here.

Here's Yakuza 0's installation screen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOyGQQjy8LA

Youu get to unlock it after completing the game.

Wait... there's one for Majima?! I didn't even take a walk around Sunshine after I finised everything. :-(

Turn left from the entrance and it's at the very end. It shows up in regular Cabaret Club gameplay too.

I quite enjoyed
the car chase section...though, partly because as soon as you got thrown the gun in the backseat I was thinking "they aren't seriously going to throw in a fucking rails shooter section out of the blue?" and then I remembered I was playing Yakuza 0 and anything can happen! I found the helicopter section with the rocket spam fairly frustrating but felt they were pretty generous on the car's health and I didn't have to re-start.

Haha, well that just makes me more depressed, as
I didn't even reach a helicopter yet. Every time I basically ran out of HP, or the taxi did, not long after the van with the machine gun and shotgun dudes, which does some serious damage. Maybe I'm not handling enemies in the right way.

Finished last night at 90 hours. This was the first Yakuza game I've ever played and I would rank it pretty high among my all time favorites.

I see the remake of 1 is coming to PS4 this summer. Is that the only other Yakuza game announced currently for the Western market?

I think 6 is scheduled for early 2018 as well.

35 hours in and just started chapter 13. Is it me or are these getting shorter? I'm sure part of it is that there were tons of sidequests to clear in the early chapters which made them seem longer. I figure I have something like 6 more hours if I stick to the story?

I think I'm done with all the major sidequests (I'm mostly missing friendship and minigame-related stuff) so I think I'm gonna make a beeline for the end before I end up abandoning the game in favor of Zelda when I get it next week. That said, I'll probably check a sidequest list before I finish to make sure I didn't miss any major one.

Man, in a year that I know I'm gonna love I still think this is gonna be a super strong GotY contender. I'd easily rate it above everything I played last year.

What does "round" wind means? I thought it meant the wind of the opposing seat (W if you're E, N if you're S and so on) but after a few games I'm not sure anymore.
Round wind in a quarter-game is East the entire time. A half-game will be East around the table once and then South. Note in your game earlier it was East 4. Both your seat wind and the round wind were the same.

Also, does the game ask you when you can declare Riichi? There was a game in which I was sure I only missed one tile to complete my hand but I couldn't.
I believe you press the square button to declare riichi. The furiten rule requires you to not be waiting on a tile that you've already discarded. So if you tossed a white dragon out earlier in the round, you cannot finish your hand by taking a discarded white dragon from someone, you would need to draw it yourself from the wall or change the tile you need to win.

Wait, so any wind will do? My wind just gives me more points? I'm talking about the standard hand "any tile combination + 3 dragons OR 3 winds" (prevalent winds is the name, iirc).

edit: ok i'm confusing myself. let's try that again.
You get 1 han if you collect your seat wind or the round wind. If both of those are the same, one triplet is worth 2 han. If you collect North when you're sitting in the West seat during a South round, it's not going to do anything.

I still didn't take out the media king, though. Only bought an extra building before I had to move on.
Plus I want to practice the dancing mini-game later. I assume that's his challenge?

When you think you're learning mahjong but you don't actually know shit.

Is the AI straight dumber on lower difficulties because I'm half way on the money CP achievement and i'm kind of more worried of how to get Mangan and Hanemans.

What type of hand are you going for exactly?

Also, 200 pages!

Misinterpreted the quads hand as quads + all double pairs, but any general pointers would probably be life savers rofl.
That's what I thought. If you were going for a 7 pair, you screwed yourself over with that quad. Your only choice at that moment in time is to call Pon/Pung to win with triplets.
