Wii U version with the hope of CEMU working with it down the road. Switch is a terrible value proposition right now... my preorder unit had the sync issues so it got sent back.

Well the game pad being on also uses CPU resources in the Wii U. So I'd rather have a more stable frame rate and less pop in instead of gamepad features TBH.

I am not a dev but if this was done to eke out extra performance wouldn't the Gamepad display nothing instead of blinking a message?

Yeah, that would make sense. Still, perhaps that is less intensive than displaying a proper map and inventory screen at all times, I dunno.

It's on displaying a silly static message. Much lessintensive than the persistent map they showed.

Yeah, this is what I figure.

Well I don't think it was done to improve performance. It was clearly done to not give the Wii U versions any advantages.

But in spite of that I think it does improve performance and I like that. Tha game pad features were not that big of a deal. Although it would have been eaiser to drop items using the gamepad.

Been playing this on the Wii u and enjoying it. I would've loved to jump to switch, but as usual with these new consoles, lack of backward compatibility snuffed my desire. Console + game would've been an Insta buy if Wii u digital library was playable. I've been moving my Wii u base from room to room so I could enjoy Zelda at my convenience. So yes, the portability of switch would be awesome.

...but not awesome enough to repurchase my whole Wii u library. It's still hard for me to believe that most gamers are okay with this practice? People legit repurchasing games is so odd...

So I have have a question and I wanted to get some thoughts on it. I was planning on giving my younger brother my Wii U and all my games now that I have a Switch. His birthday is next week and he seemed really excited about BOTW so I went ahead and bought it as his birthday gift. I know the Wii U version has a mandatory install of 3 GB before you can start playing. Should I open the game and pre download the install for him? Or leave it wrapped and let him do it?

I always do that now, open stuff up so they don't have to muck about with stuff which would keep them from having fun with the actual thing.

I think they'd understand, it's not like it's actually used, and you're just doing it for their benefit. I remember I mainly did it for a PS4 I got at launch for a gift for a family friend because I saw people say that the day one update bricked their consoles and they had to send them back. I wanted to be sure it'd work when he got it lol...

It took me I think quite a few minutes of installing before I could play it. Save him of that extra wait, I'd say.

Yeah that's I was thinking too. Plus I have some other games I wanted to install for him that I deleted awhile back and I want to make sure it has enough room for them after the BOTW install. Thanks for your insight!

It's looking increasingly likely that Switch won't get very many Wii U ports after Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4 (not confirmed but very likely) so nobody is going to be repurchasing their entire collection. Those who derided the Wii U calling it obsolete because the Switch would supposedly get all its good games via ports ignored that Nintendo already ported the Wii U games with good sales potential, to 3DS.

Yeah, I think you making sure he's not going to run into any problems trying to get BotW with some other games installed and ready to play is a good big brother move. Happy birthday to him!

I just tried out the "Pro" hud-less option someone mentioned a page or two back I think. I was skeptical that I'd like it because I looked at the minimap often. After 10 minutes though, I don't want to play in any other way.

(man, I wish I could map sprint to L and "ability" to Y)

Anyone of you regret getting the Wii U version as opposed to experiencing it for the first time on the Switch?

I'm thinking about going to the store today to get it (Wii U copy). Otherwise, I can grab it this Fall along with the Switch.

I'll get it for the Wii U for the same reason I got Twilight Princess on Gamecube.

I don't like to early adopt hardware, and this game looks GOOD.

Bought the WiiU ver

No regrets

It's not as bad as people say.

There are some parts that are noticeable in fps drops but you will be too busy being immersed into the setting of the game to worry about it.

Might end up double dipping in the future for the switch ver when I get myself a switch just to play the game portably.

Gonna pass on dlc for the WiiU ver and will instead buy the switch ver dlc when I get the game and the system.

Framerate definitely takes frequent hits, but it seems like it's the environment and draw distance causing it. Rarely bad to a point I'd call it troubling and I can't recall having an issue with it during combat so far.

Doesn't sound like docked Switch is much better, so I'm fine with it.

Breath of the Wild Wii U is now available to order online at Target:

http://www.target.com/p/the-legend-of-zelda-breath-wild-nintendo-wii-u/-/A-51325366

Still says not sold in stores but a few do have some. Hopefully they'll be replenished Tuesday.

It's B2G1 free this week. Remember Target discounts each game a third of the lowest price game when determining return value.

So you can return two games for $80 back and keep Zelda for $40.

The discount in based on the lowest game though. So if you buy a $60, $50 and $30 game the return value would only be $50, $40 and $20.

It's not a trick as this is how Target has down their B2G1 for many years and they've never cared to change it.

Bought the Wii u digital version on Friday. I can't personally compare it to switch, but it's really fun. You get used to the chugginess but it's there and noticeable when there's lots of stuff going on. Still quite playable.

Awesome! Thank you very much! Hopefully it'll be in stock in stores tomorrow. I would buy them on their website but it says they won't arrive until Friday and I'll be out of town this weekend.

Yeah it was completely unavailable online since launch. Since its back today and staying up I'm assuming they got a new shipment.

Saturday there were some in two Targets near me. Yesterday morning there were only one in each. Now there are gone from there and now available in some farther away. So I assume copies are starting to be replenished.

I think I prefer the Wii U version to the Switch version because of the built in TV remote on the Wii U tablet. Performance wise they both seem to perform the same(with the docked Switch).

So apparently if your playing BotW on Wii U and you have your console set to surround sound then you never hear the voice acting. Gotta switch your console to stereo to hear it...

I was wondering when I would hear some voice acting about 15 hours into the game.

Not true

I have mine set to surround sound and hear VA during cutscenes just fine

The bigger problem, for me, is that the Wii U only supports LPCM for surround sound. Unfortunately my AVR has some issues with LPCM(the audio always cuts out at the beginning). Your AVR might also have some issues with LPCM if there's any problem with the surround sound.

Physical versus digital copy wont make a difference in loading times will it? I prefer physical copies but i also already have some eshop credit...hmm

It's out of stock at target. I'm not sure what to do with my life.

Try Brickseek to see if any store around you has it?

Otherwise maybe wait a day for Tuesday. They could definitely restock then with the usual new releases.

Usually yes it would but I wonder if the fact it requires an install would make the difference less.

Unfortunately I have no idea.

That's a really odd issue. Nintendo should release a fix for this ASAP as setting your output to stereo is a shitty workaround since the sound engineering in this game is great.

God, yesterday the game froze for 4 seconds after headshotting a moblin. Performance in this game is unacceptable... Anyone would tell you the Wii U version was an afterthought instead of the target platform, Jesus.

It's especially disappointing coming from Nintendo of all companies.

Ridiculous talk.

If that unplayable I would give up on it as your expectations are too much.

Since when is a stable framerate too much to expect? From the company that favors framerate over resolution I might add. What exactly about what I wrote is ridiculous? I accept drops, but I don't accept performance this bad. Especially not on a console that's much more powerful than a Wii U, but still can't handle it better while docked.

Whats even stranger is I got the V.O. for all the cutscenes up till you meet the old lady in the town AND i still get the V.O. for the memory cutscenes but nothing else (example - the singing, guitar playing bird at the stables)

Another Wii U owner here. Just ordered the game. I should receive it tomorrow or Wednesday.

TBH I felt forced to buy the game for €60 because it was getting sold out everywhere and I was afraid that there won't be new stock for the Wii U version. Just so people buy a Switch for Zelda.

I think it's ridiculous that a big game like Zelda is getting sold out so quickly. This applies to both versions. Nintendo should have been prepared for this. This makes me not want to own the Switch in the future. I don't want to deal with games getting out of stock, paying high prices (for what I can afford) and checking stock constantly. The Wii U left a bad taste when it comes to this.

Meh. That's disappointing. Considering that he Wii U and Wii aren't terribly far apart power-wise, it's unfortunate that Nintendo has officially shuddered the Wii U. I think the real heartbreaker about this system and the launch of the switch, is that the Wii U is might be the first system that didn't do right by the customers. The Wii U was the system that was advertised to be the portable/home solution. It was finally Nintendo's big HD entry. It had the promise of all of Nintendo's franchises reimagined with new possibilities only hinted at in NintendoLand.

They just couldn't get the thing to stick, and by not finding a way for the Wii U fans to port enjoy their digital Wii U games on the Switch, they pretty much ensured that a significant portion of their audience wouldn't be making the transition forward.

I guess they accounted for that in hopes of new fans.

I have most of the major first part and Nindie games o the system. I'd love a switch, but having all of that library go dead if I sell the Wii U..not appealing.

I've played maybe 20-25 hours so far and have only ran into one spot where I had problems with the framerate. Rain and thunderstorms haven't really been an issue, although I did notice a little slowdown, it didn't really mess anything up for me.

Toward the northeast though, there is a tower covered in goo that makes the game occasionally chug along. After spending maybe 10 minutes at this tower, I would say I encountered maybe 3 moments where the game's framerate really effected what I was trying to do in a negative way. This was pretty annoying, but that was about it. Overall the game's ran pretty well and I'm consistently impressed with the visuals.

Any successful commercial Nintendo usually retains a full MSRP for the majority of the generation anyway, and this game is definitely going to move some units. 2-3 years from now it will still be full-price, so nothing is gained by waiting a few years for the price to drop ( and as you said, the Wii U version will almost assuredly have a limited run and is likely to spike in value eventually).

They are selling as many Swich copies as they can make, it's launch. That is normal.

For the WiiU one it is almost certainly intentionally a limited one and done smaller print run, they did the same for Twilight Princess for GameCube, they do not want to sell the WiiU game more than they have to. They want to push the Switch and only Switch. Exact same thing as was done with TP for GCN.

Went with the digital version in the end from Amazon, order was taking too long.

Only problem is, all I have to store it is a 32GB USB drive. That should be okay? I know Nintendo don't reccommend it, but a guy on the OT said it ran fine.

I am a bit.

On the other hand, it's too expensive in Brasil, and there are a lot of hardware issues for now.

I might wait until June/E3

Yeah. I probably won't really play the game till I have all the Amiibos (including the 3 unreleased ones) and the hard mode from the DLC comes out.

I'm just scared it will sell out before I'll be able to get it for $40 again. I have similar fears for Color Splash and Pokken but those seem to be well in stock.

I own all Nintendo published Wii U games except for four. Zelda and three released in 2017 Pokken, Color Splash and Mario and Sonic Rio Olympics.

The Olympics game came out in June and was scarce by fall I think. A new copy is now $100. $40 over MSRP for Mario game less than a year-old.

I still hope to find a copy somewhere.

I know multiple people have done it for years with no problems.

So don't sell the Wii U! IMO it's a console that will age like wine.

I only felt hard done by the lack of a Metroid game, the removal of Gamepad features in Zelda BOTW and the meddling in Starfox Zero's development (I hate the all range mode controls and the Gyrowing sections), other than that Nintendo did right by me in terms of first party releases.

Too much goodness for one day! Where to start?!

I like a lot of things about the Wii U. It has real character (despite the jank) in a way that the Switch doesn't yet.

No point getting rid of it, even if the Switch gets a Smash Bros port it's basically useless to me unless they add Wiimote support.

Anyone played this on Wii U GamePad instead of TV?

A lot of my gaming is through Off-TV play and I am wondering if Breath of the Wild suffers when played only using the GamePad.

Beyond the gamepad screen still being subpar in color production and low-res, so "suffer," naw.

I would recommend using the tv as much as possible though , the expansive world made any attempt at playing the gamepad only a few minutes long for me.

I really enjoy Zelda on WiiU. For me it was the right decision to not buy a switch. So i can spend the saved Money into other Games, and - oh Boy..., this month has plenty of them!

Bit the bullet and ordered the Wii U version from Amazon. I was holding out hope for a switch, but decided to just stick with the Wii U for a bit longer and get a switch in a year or so.

Been playing over the weekend.

Can confirm that "unplayable" complaints are overblown.

I'm sure the frame rate fluctuates all the time but I only notice it every once and awhile.

Oh and let me add I'm playing the downloaded version on the internal SSD.

Framerate has been much smoother on the Gamepad as opposed to the TV.
