Are Amiibos as "cheat codes" an appropriate way to go moving forward? (BOTW related)

I only own the BotW Zelda amiibo, a Luigi amiibo, toon link and wolf Link.

Neither feel like a game-breaking advantage. Zelda gives you a (regular ass) knight's shield with higher durability, toon link gives you some fish, Luigi gives you some food.
Nothing game breaking, and all of it once every 24 hours.

I wouldn't call them "cheat codes", seeing as their effects are so limited and their usage is highly restricted.

I wonder if speedrunners are free to use amiibos, seeing as using the tingle tuner in WW was needed for Zombie hovering.

A bunch of non canon immersion breaking stuff

very much this, too. They're cosmetic items that i'd go out of my way not to have ;)

I just unlocked the Tunic of Twilight using the Smash Bros Link Amiibo. Then I used the Ganondorf Smash amiibo and dropped a bunch of barrels. Then I used all my uncompatible amiibos to make it rain food.

I'm set for a while, I think.

I don't mind as long as there's some other way to access the content, even if that way is very hard. I say this as someone who has zero interest in Amiibos.

Hell no. The only way BOTW could be better is if these were all unlockable in-game via special shrines and not locked behind expensive figurines. AC has been doing legacy outfits and equipment for years.... :| Like come on EPONA of all things is part of an Amiibo.
Yeah, the Epona one really fucking sucks.

I haven't played the game myself, but I could imagine some of those items giving you an edge early on in the game - if not just for having extra weapons to rely on.

But no Epona
No FD Link
No green tunics until you complete all the shrines. I personally like to get my fashion souls on so less clothing bothers me.

It's pretty bullshit. Hopefully they add these as DLC or something. I looked up amiibos and they're like 20 bucks each? Fuck. That.

I don't own an Amiibo and will probably never own one, but think this is dope as fuck for people who bought them. I really dunno why anyone would give a shit.

I hate how there is no other way to get the dlc. I want the game content i just don't care about this amiibo shit. What's so hard about selling the dlc in a package?

I think they want you to physically buy an amibo.

To trigger a collecting mentality maybe? And cause you to buy more

Any armchair psychologists here

Totally agree, I feel like none of it breaks anything and you're really not missing anything unless you look it up.

Fuck that. At this point Epona and a Hero of Time hood are DLC that cost $50 separately.

No thanks. I don't like paying for cheat codes.

I wish Nintendo would've kept Amiibos as official toys without all the ingame content stuff.

I was just thinking about this same thing.
Heard about all the special unlocks and some how found myself with 4 new amiibos. I told myself I wasn't going to get this into it but after scoring a few smash Links I'm curious on what else is out there.

Searching high and low for a Toon Link and Zelda set. I'm part of the problem I know.

It's funny to think this is Nintendo dlc. On the one hand it sucks that it's $13 a pop for whatever it is, but it is also a figure and reusable for other games.

I mean... she's a horse. And it's a horse with some history, but like... I dunno that that's what I'm concerned about. I'm more invested in a horse I actually had built some rapport with than just some reminder of previous games. And even the costumes, unless the stats on those are fucking crazy, I'm not particularly drawn to need them beyond a one-off goof of "hey, he's wearing that old costume! I know that costume! ....Okay."

Yeah, it's pretty lousy that all the stuff is locked behind the Amiibos. Especially considering some of the prices of them on eBay (Not that I'd pay to unlock them in the first place).

Thought Nintendo was above this shit, but this is essentially preorder DLC in disguise.

I love how all of the exclusive items are locked behind Amiibo that aren't widely available any more.
That's pretty dirty.

I actually wouldn't mind the idea much if they locked them behind the new Breath of the Wild Amiibo released alongside the game.
I might have actually considered spending some money on them then.
But they didn't do that. So they get nothing from me.

speedrunners indeed use amiibo to get epona asap

they definitely make the game easier. use at your own discretion, i guess.

I like that all the amiibo that aren't zelda at least do something. I'll gladly take free ingredients.

Again all of these things would be better off as free items the player can attain in the game more so than being locked behind several figures. Even worse is the completely arbitrary 24hr limit on each use.

Wow, its funny but this is the first time I've ever used any of my Amiibos.

I own the Smash link, Smash Sheik, Smash Toon link, and the Twilight princess wolf amiibo from the list of compatible ones, which is perfect, as I really wanted Epona and the Mask looks pretty cool as well. Probably have another 10 or so random ones, but all I get from them is random food or supplies. Man, thank god I stopped buying these after the original smash ones came out.

Cause how many people buy just one?
Anecdotal, but not many.
Their stupid plan worked on me. Got a couple of freebies and saw they were nice quality for the price and now have about 10 including favourites like Samus and Olimar even though I don't have Smash.

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Think they work out fine in BotW. The costumes are a great touch and make sense without feeling OP at all, while the mats are some helpful freebies that doesnt really devalue much. Only certain powerful weapons can give a leg up in the early game that may drop, but the durability system ensures that won't last beyond a few encounters. The benefits to all of this aren't so severe that it wrecks the design intent of the game.

Not to mention
Dark Link a costume you can buy so I don't see why the rest couldn't have been spread around secret shops

I hate it. I've got some amiibo as nice little figures but the digital side of them has become the worst case scenario to me. Amiibo unlocks should always be cosmetic only in my opinion. I don't see why they should ever be something the effects gameplay

Whenever a game comes out with amiibo functionality, people complain that it either has too much value ("dlc") or too little value (Amiibo value not worth it)

The solution is pretty simple: let people who just want the DLC part pay for the DLC separately for a (much) lower price. That way you don't piss people off who feel like they have to shell out for an amiibo just because they want Epona or an outfit.

I tend to not try to know what is locked behind Amiibod as I have no interest in collecting them, but yeah, gating these items always makes you wonder if they would have been included in the base game otherwise.
This speaks to additional content at large, mind you, not just amiibo but DLC as well.

Until March 3rd all of the previous Amiibos were available on Amazon and other online retailers. Hell Smash TP Link was down to 10 bucks. Then every one decided to buy them all at once. It's not like these were super rare, hard to track down or find amiibo. Hell Smash TP Link is probably one of the most common.

I feel like BotW amiibo use is one of the bigger game changers compared to other titles, if it just granted you costumes that's one thing but since you get weapon and armor rewards too as well as random plants or food it's quite a game changer.

I honestly don't mind it too much, items you get will break after a few battles and
horses like Epona are only 4 star
so there's still a wild 5 star out there somewhere.

I love using amiibos in BOTW. They just save me from having to go catch fish and climb trees for apples. Which is A-OK in my book.

Amiibo are B2G1 at Target this week. So if you want the new Zelda Amiibo right now that's you best bet.

Also while the increased price of the regular Breath of The Wild Amiibo to $16 because of increased quality may be questioned there is no question that Zelda is definitely not worth the price increase.

She's definitely standard Amiibo quality. In fact I feel like she's the worst looking of all human female Amiibo.

I embrace Amiibo wholeheartedly and I enjoy how they're being used ^^

My only complaints are the fact that there is no Amiibo dedicated action game (played Amiibo Festival... eh) and that there aren't more as many rare Amiibo as there were back when they first came out. At least as far as I know!

I have the Wolf Link amiibo, can you use him without Twilight Princess HD save data on it? I never got around to playing it...

I think you get 3 hearts by default.

Wait, so some of the amiibo items besides Wolf Link really are exclusive?! I had thought I'd read you'd be able to get all of them in the main game except for Wolf Link. That's not true?

I was disappointed to find out Epona was locked behind an Amiibo. I don't think you can even buy that Link in the UK any more.

I have quite a lot of Amiibos, quite a few link ones (Toon Link, Wolf Link, BotW Archer and Rider Link), but not that one. Sadly.

If I do buy an Amiibo it's generally for the figure though. I've not bought any for their game benefits.

Is that a US only thing?

In the UK only Guardian was dearer. The rest were the same prices they'd always been.

Hate aiimbos and meaningful exclusivity locked behind them tbh.

My phone has NFC right? Might as well sell cheat codes through your Nintendo app. :p

As someone who owns 13 Zelda Amiibos, I love BotW's implementation of them. I love scanning them every day. I managed to get a 300 rupee coin from the 8-Bit Link Amiibo. I was so excited!

I passed on the Moblin BotW amiibo and the sheik amiibo is too pricey. That's all I'm missing.

It sucks when the ones that do cool things are out of stock everywhere.

I can't find the wind waker two pack anywhere and no way am I paying amazon or eBay prices.

Amiibo go in and out of stock. I bet there was a surge in Zelda Amiibo demand due to the release of both the Switch and BotW. Best just wait and you'll find them at RRP.

My recommendations for you both would be, ask in BST or try GameTZ.

I might do that if they don't go in stock by the end of the month.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Just ordered the other BotW ones I don't have from target. Stupid Nintendo. Got me to buy more amiibos
