Having seen some people suggest there may be problems with the engine can I just say Dragon Age: Inquisition's animations, facial and otherwise, were pretty good and even great most of the time and that was Bioware's first foray into using Frostbite. So getting use to a new engine can't really be an excuse for what's happening here.

I am not happy to be saying any of this by the way as i'm a huge fan of Bioware's games and have been waiting for this for a long time. I will still enjoy the game but the lack of quality control is not sure
 
CDPR absolutely hand crafted every conversation tho. It's just that they probably put way more work into their animation library than Bioware did:

But yes, they definitely touched up most of them. The point is the algorithm allowed them to make every conversation look good with a minimal amount of work.

Every cinematic dialogue was approached with the same care, attention and goal - to create the most compelling and emotional scene for given quest and story. Only this way, the characters could ring true and players would want to invest in them, to understand them, to help or condemn them. When they act like humans, not voiceover-delivery machines. Achieving this is a deliberate, careful process. Procedural doesn't get you this.

The algorithm just seems like a tool to put together a very rough string of animations, but it's just the starting point.

I see, fair enough then. Also, "voiceover-delivery machines" is a pretty perfect description of most of the Andromeda NPCs.

CDPR definitely has a universal conversation system. You can see the repeated animations once you play enough.

But they're all of good quality and so numerous.
 
The faces kind of remind me a little of Quake 3 engine games when devs finally where able to animate characters mouths in 3D instead of just swapping textures for mouth movements.
 
The gameplay looks great but.....yeah......this shit is hard to ignore. What did they do get the ME3 multiplayer team to make the whole game?

I just want to know where it all went wrong? Dragon Age Inquisition had decent and believable facial and motion animations. ME:A feels completely out of place and broken. Did they run out of time and just sent whatever they had a few weeks before release? I am a big Mass Effect fan, and I was really looking forward to this. I have a pre-order on Amazon and I have never pre-ordered a game in a while. I think at this point I might just cancel and see what happens. What do you think guys?
 
Here's another comparison of MyFaceIsTired with ME1, but I picked a one-off quest NPC in brighter lighting.

Right-click the play bar and select "loop" to loop it.
Footage pulled from 1080p youtube videos of both games.

The ME1 NPC is relaying more emotional dialogue, but I couldn't think of a better scene.

I couldn't tell whether the point was that the random Citadel NPC is slightly more emotive than the story character, or that they have the exact same swaying animation down to the timing of their blink.

Did EA outsource this to some inexperienced company or something? I mean, the incompetency of the animation and character modelling here is just astounding.

If you haven't played the trial, do that before making any decision because this game is going to be divisive. I played the trial on PC and felt a lot of this was blown out of proportion, aside from the weird dead eyes and some animation hitches.

It's going to be really rough around the edges, but I'm having a completely fine time. I'm not really asking for much besides "more Mass Effect", so it really depends what your priorities are.

If this is CGI I'm dead. How the fuck are people on the page you posted this saying this looks bad? WTF? That would be some of the greatest CGI I've ever seen. Am I being trolled?

I never want to see the people you see on a daily basis
 
I also have an issue with the body models, mainly Sara Ryder. Her neck seems too far forward from her shoulders which themselves seem sloped down a little too much. Also when I used a custom character her neck would bend weirdly in a few scenes.

Now the combat animation is great. The running in that is fine. I guess if you spend most of the time fighting the animations aren't so bad.

Wasn't there claims of them sourcing ME1 animations for use in this?

I mean, Horizon has some pretty bad animations and lip syncing like the guy who just dies but Jesus this is worse.
