Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

I do wonder. Like always the tech roadmap will dictate when they launch. 2 years away would mean planning out now. Have they gone past 16nm for GPUs yet? Intel hasn't gone beyond 14nm yet for CPUs. Then there is HBM memory. To see performance increases worth a damn in a console box, things need to happen in the next 2-3 years for 2020 launch. I don't expect next gen consoles until 2020 at the earliest.

Sony will go PS4 Pro Slim against the Scorpio at a cheaper price. 2.5 years until a PS5, do not see it at all. What tech would they base it on to hit that date that fits in a console box at good thermals, pretty much nothing at the moment.

You are being too pessimistic about the 2019 technology roadmap.

Both PS4 Pro and Scorpio are Jaguar (CPU) + Polaris (GPU) + GDDR5 (memory)

(Yes, before someone complains, both designs have minor customizations vs. the base designs, but the customizations are minor in the big scheme of things)

By 2019 there will be big improvements in all 3 major technology areas. Zen has proven it's a very large performance boost over Jaguar and it's shipping this year, so should be available in SOC format by 2019. Vega is shipping this year and is a significant improvement over Polaris. And on the memory side GDDR5X has been shipping since last year and HBM2 will ship this year, both are reasonable options for 2019.

So there is no reason to think Sony or Microsoft can't deliver a quantum leap, next generation console in 2019.

Also, what's this stuff about a hardware implementation of DX12 on the GPU command processor!? That sounds like some seriously amazing shit. Supposedly taking instructions that generally cost upwards of thousands of instructions all the way down to 11 or 9!?

Ive been told its not as important as they make it seem - See the replies from Matt.

The numbers look ridic going from thousands to 11. but from a devs perspective i guess it is more like 'meh'.

So, you're still alive, huh...

I'll say this, as someone who doesn't own an Xbox One currently and gets everything on PS4, I'm likely switching all multi-plat 3rd party games to Scorpio this year

1. I hope this custom stuff on the cpu helps so that the cpu doesnt bottleneck
2. I hope the cooling solution is good enough to sustain those crazy clocks
3. I hope freesync is possible if I have a monitor with hdmi 2.0 and freesync (like with a normal rx 480)

This right here :

The bottom line is that Scorpio's six teraflops will almost certainly go a lot further than an equivalent PC part. I asked Microsoft about this specifically, and they raise a number of good arguments that make the case strongly. Firstly, that their shader compiler is far more efficient than PC equivalents (think of shaders as native GPU code). Secondly, addressing the hardware directly via their API and with access to console-specific GPU extensions again adds to the advantage of a fixed platform box. And finally, they point to their optimisation software - PIX (Performance Investigator for Xbox) - as a tool that provides the path to console-specific optimisations that PC simply cannot get.

We live in a world where the .53 teraflop difference between PS4 and Xbox One was "massive", "objectively better", and "night and day", but the 1.88 teraflop difference between Scorpio and Pro is only slight and will probably result in no discernable difference in graphical quality.

I'm... I'm not surprised.
Ahhh yes the great 900p battle of 2013. How could I forget

I loved it!!
That console is insanely awesome...

I guess going with enhanced Jaguar cores and Polaris GPU can benefit us on the price! Maybe USD 399 is still doable?

We may need a new thread to clear some people up on what's inside of the Scorpio, and what the specs relate to... It's in no way the equivalent to GTX 1080.

Of course specs wise it doesn't compare to a 1080, but they showed a game running at the same performance as it.

Whatever tuning Ms made to improve the design of the console clearly worked on this game.

I think it's pretty much a lock for 499. People crying about no Zen are the same people who would crucify it when they would have had to announce a 599 price point with it.

yo, the FIRST face-off will be a beauty to behold.

that thread is going to be amazing.

I hope DF chooses wisely! (watch it be
rdr2
)

It's almost as bad as the Republican hypocrisy over the Gorsuch confirmation.

Nice upgrade over the ps4pro. Price is going to be important but with the ties to xb1 i don't see how this can be way more than the pro is for Playstation. For MS maybe a positive fresh start but a tide turner?

Sony surely is not going to let the pro stay at 399€/$ when Scorpio releases.

1st party are always going to make a game push past what it's specs say. Look at Horizon, you would never get a game that looks like that running on the same spec PC. It's a totally different story with multi-plat 3rd party games though.

3rd party games are not going to perform better than a 1080, that's not how it works. MS 1st party games totally designed around the console, sure it's possible

Some mental Gymnastics going on in this thread.

So this has to simultaneously compete with a fictional PS5 and launch at a comparable price to PS4 Pro?

This kind if delusion is a sure sign of to much salt intake.

OT: I'm a Sony fan above MS fwiw and aside from X-Box One S never been interested in X Box. But this looks/sounds super neato. I'm provisionally in.

1. That's the point
2. Seems a safe bet, given what they've done thus far this gen
3. Wouldn't hold my breath on that one. But it would be cool!

I loved it!!

Seems to be the target, given the parts they're using. They have to know it would be a mistake to launch for much more than that.

now list the females.

Let's see...I'll have to do 2 separate categories...

Boos:
Xbox One: Riley Reid
PS4: Eva Lovia
Ps4 Pro: Channel Preston
Scorpio: Jayden James

Butt:
Xbox One: Riley Reid
PS4: Channel Preston
Ps4 Pro: Eva Lovia

The Jaguar inclusion seems to be offset by some of the custom hardware they've included designed to handle certain DX12 operations - though we'll have to see how that pans out.

Can you say if it has an extra HDMI output for audio? like current 4K BluRay Players?

Man, if this thing launches at $399 and actually delivers that level of performance, I'm going to be laughing so hard at all of these naysayers as I walk into my store and buy one.
In no way am I a naysayer. Saying the Scorpio isn't on the level of a 1080 is in no way insulting the thing.

Don't concern yourself with that too much.

Nice, I was wondering about that myself. Sounded like it should be impressive (Due to the extremely technical reasoning of a big number vs a small number) but I had no fucking idea what any of it meant.

Goddammit, it's going to be better than my PC :(

EDIT:
In no way am I a naysayer. Saying the Scorpio isn't on the level of a 1080 is in no way insulting the thing.

or maybe not? (Got a 970 atm, albeit with a really old CPU)

Sure, I guess this would be possible if you live in a fantasy world but for the rest of us that understand the specs, it's actually not rational possibility.

Seems cool.
As a Ps4 pro owner this is kinda what I wanted the Pro to be.

Still, unless they bring some big exclusives I doubt I'll even consider getting one. If I owned a scoprio right now I still wouldn't use it until like september of this year because of all the great exclusives (and multiplat with PC) games on Ps4.

And I have to agree with the people saying it's probably going to be $499. Which is still a good price IMO

Better than PS4 Pro but now competing with entry level gaming PC

huh are you serious? This thing is going to be $400-500 max and is delivering the same performance as a GTX1070 a $400 GPU. An entry level PC isnt going to give you native 4k at high settings. wtf is this shit.

The bolded is false. Using a Microsoft game optimized for the console to gauge performance similarities is garbage reporting.

It's an optimized game on Pc too, but you are wrong if you are saying they had specific scorpio optimizations on this test.

They ported in 2 days, and largely relied on the dx12 co processor to optimize the performance.

At least that's what Ms told DF. They could be lying though, but I don't think they would on a tech reveal.
