I went 1-3 with Esper emblam zombies. The rounds ran so late (4am) that I stareted to miss triggers. While my play wasn't good, my pulls were. Pulled new gideon and Nissa!

Haven't played Magic in a while because I wasn't into the local store, but the comic shop who split from them started running Magic events and they're running 15 dollar prereleases so I signed up for two.

Ended up running the table with one of the best sealed decks I've ever built. This thing was stupid.

I legitimately could not believe I opened 2 of the R/G cycle land so I could splash Samut so easily.

Here's how the games went:
G1: Curved out both games against blue/black, easy 2-0. Took 10 minutes.
G2: 2-1 against WB aggro with Archfiend of Ifnir and Oketra. I lost game two to a mull to 6 into a sketch keep and always had the answer to Archfiend otherwise. Gust Walker was consistently impressive in this match. He never drew Oketra, which is lucky because she would have swung the grindy games I won.
G3: 2-1 against WB zombies with Angel of Sanctions. Also lost game two to a mull into a sketch keep where I didn't draw lands. Game 3 was the only close actual Magic game of the night, because he dropped Angel of Sanctions on Glorybringer and I had to play around it cleverly as I never drew my removal.
G4: 2-0 against RG midrange. He had bombs like Honored Hydra and Glorybringer but never played them because I curved out game 1 and he got color screwed game 2.
G5: 2-0 against GW whatever, I got matched against a 2-2 deck in the final round for some reason and it was the second easiest match of the night.

Prize packs got Oketra, Angel of Sanctions, Pull from Tomorrow, Neheb, Temmet, Honored Hydra, Gideon's Invocation, and Mouth to Feed.

Went 3-1 today with a Bant deck.

The blue god (or any of the gods really) are backbreaking in limited.

Only lost to a dude who had the artifact that prevented creatures from attacking plus Gideon plus red God plus the red haste + exert flame slash dragon. Rare pool of his was stacked.

Prerelease went pretty poorly in general for me. Didn't open anything of value except a foil full art island, didn't open most of the good commons, and I somehow manage to flood in every game despite only having 16 lands in the deck.

Set seems like it's fun for limited, I just had awful luck. Hopefully I get the chance to draft it soon.

Went 3-1-1 at my prerelease with a B/G deck. I got color screwed a few times, but most of my losses were fair and very close, so I had a great time. The games I won were a mix of completely running over my opponent and very close matches. I had great pulls, including Archfiend and Ifner, and plenty of removal, but I never actually triggered the Archfiend's cycling trigger. Sandwurm Convergence was great in grindier games. Though it sometimes took a long time, I didn't lose the two times I got it out. Nothing special was in my prize packs More detail about the deck will come later.

I stayed up until 6 to finish Persona, so I overslept and rip the Sunday prerelease dream. I guess I can use the time to watch Arsenal lose again and get back to Nier. Good thing my 2HG partner had to cancel last minute anyway.

Haven't played Magic in a while, but I'm excited to play this set later today. I haven't played sealed since BfZ so hopefully I don't end up going 0-4, lmao.

2-1-1 in 2HG (though we were definitely likely to win in the match that went to time). Got Kefnet and Pull from Tomorrow as promos, which was pretty snazzy!

I dunno, Michael Majors was not confident in any bannings on the last GAM podcast and I could totally see Wizards waiting to see results first. Maybe they're like: Look at this there Manglehorn. Isn't it great?

I don't see any way they let Cat Combo go.

Gideon should be banned but I would consider that less of a sure thing.

They have to ban Cat Combo, right? What are they gonna do otherwise, see people playing Manglehorn and Trespasser's Curse and say "Yeah, that looks alright"?

I could see Gideon and Heart not eating a ban, but some part of Cat Combo has to go ASAP.

Got to play yesterday for the first time with paper cards. Had a lot of fun. Everyone I played against was helpful during the games and after. They have another event today but won't be able to make it out so plan on going to their Amonkhet draft this Friday.

I'm tempted to buy some boosters but from what i'm reading online is it's financially smarter just to buy specific cards for a deck. My LGS changes what format they play at FNM each week but they have a pretty solid Commander group that plays each week. Not sure what format of a deck I want to build/buy first. Any suggestions?

Yeah, buying boosters is not recommended unless you plan on drafting with them. Commander is really fun, and you can buy one of the preconstructed decks, sleeve it and get in on playing! They are really well made and great value for the money.

Standard's in a bad place right now, and I personally think Modern costs too much to really get into unless you're super serious about it. I'd go with EDH/Commander. A lot of really fun Commander cards are cheap and unless the group you play with is super serious you can have a great time without spending a ton of money.

To be honest of all the Magic related things i've read, Commander has been the least. I'll check it out today.

I forgot to add that I found out that there is going to be a Grand Prix 30 minutes from me in a few months as well. The schedule has a bunch of events over the 3 days. While I don't see myself playing in the main event or whatever the sheer amount of magic that can be played in that weekend looks insane. May have to request that Friday off.

If you want to save a couple of bucks, you can go for some of the older Commander decks that are generally cheaper than the current ones.

The Command Zone is a good channel that's all about Commander: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLsiaNUb42gRAP7ewbJ0ecQ

Here is a playlist of Commander related videos from another popular channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2n6rIzIA6A&list=PLvqw7t0kbGX_tM4ESRbW20-cuBiRWDdGb

The first video in the playlist kind of gives you an overview how the format works.

Commander was a very fun format to me until everyone around me started building these hyper competitive decks that just pull of this big combo and insta-kill everyone. If you want to play Commander make sure you have some friends who just want to do wacky stuff and who teach you to become better and you'll be fine.

Turn 1: Swamp, Mana Vault.
Turn 2: Swamp, Ad Nauseum, <draw entire deck>, Lotus Petal, Ornithopter, Culling the Weak, Skirge Familiar, <discard 50 cards>, Exanguinate

What isn't fun about that

In that case build troll decks like Gaddock Teeg, Hidetsugu, Zo-Zu, Empress Galina, Jhoira etc.

I just have to interrupt this Commander / Amonkhet lovefest to say how much I absolutely love Modern as a format. Unless you're going to a big competitive event it's really easy to throw together weird builds and have a great time at an lgs.

A couple weeks ago I brought GW Eldrazi Tron (running 4 Displacer, Elesh Norn & 3 Wurmcoil Engine-just all over the place) and had a great time, last week I played a Zur-Doran deck and went 2-2, this week I brought Jeskai Flash and absolutely smothered the Infect & Burn decks I played, 3 sideboard Deflecting Palm ftw. Although I did get whooped by Ad Nauseum (which I really believe is a think-less deck. Just drop Phyrexian Unlife or hold out for an Angel's Grace, then drop Ad and win. Oh boy you really outsmarted me there.....) Modern is in a really great place right now, so much variety

I just lost after casting Gideon on Turn 3. To a 9 year old girl.

Went much better today.

Went 3-0 and didn't drop a single game. Much improved over yesterdays 1-2. I opened Rhonas (again) who was once again my only big bomb, but this time I had some fixing to play removal from red. Went Jund and had a much easier time--splashing for removal (if you have the fixing) seems like a no-brainer with this expansion. I very much enjoy this set.

So my green/black -1/-1 counter deck wasn't anything to write home about. Went 1-1-2. Lost to two red decks that managed to overpower me before I could stabilize. This set seems really fun in limited, so many weird interactions.

Does anyone know if Ultra Pro playmats are machine washable? I'd like to get the special Command Zone one but i usually like to wash them periodically.

So, I opened a pretty great pool at my Pre-release, but it was not to be.

Round 1 was 1-1 and then I had a seizure completely out of the blue and was rushed to the ER.

So yeah, worst Pre-release of my life.

I got to do a neat stack thing, but unfortunately it was against a kid who had only just started playing Magic. I tried to explain what was happening, but I think he just assumed I knew what I was doing and accepted it :(

Cast Trial of Ambition, hold priority, while it's on the stack activate Seeker of Insight to loot, trigger Archfiend of Ifnir to wipe his X/1s, then let Trial resolve once the small creatures are dead. Felt good, but it would have felt better if I was playing against someone more experienced!

First time I've successfully played control at a prerelease. Went 4-2 in the end, enough for top 8. I lost only to the eventual winner who was playing U/G ramp (he had multiple Angler Drakes and bounce spells, making me lose all the value from my Lay Claim and Illusory Wrappings), and a friend who had a solid R/B aggro/discard deck (he forced me to discard my answers, then murdered me with Hazoret and a bunch of exert creatures). Beat two G/B -1/-1 counter decks, a Naya aggro deck, and a guy who played G/R midrange game 1, lost to my single target removal, and swapped to Esper tokens game 2 only to get absolutely destroyed by Archfiend of Ifnir :D

My deck was:

2x Seeker of Insight
Dune Beetle
Ancient Crab
Kefnet the Mindful
Cursed Minotaur
Aven Initiate
Horror of the Broken Lands
Archfiend of Ifnir
River Serpent
Supernatural Stamina
Essence Scatter
Pull from Tomorrow
Trial of Ambition
Cancel
Illusory Wrappings
Galestrike
Unburden
Cartouche of Ambition
Wander in Death
Splendid Agony
Final Reward
Lay Claim
Fetid Pools
8x Island
8x Swamp

This is why I never concede even when I have literally no chance of winning. Never know when your opponent is going to have a seizure and you win by default.

It looks like a trip in the washing machine on gentle should do the trick.

The playmats are hot when they get printed, so heat shouldn't be an issue.

I'm sorry. Seizures suck (had a few as a kid).

Glad you're okay.
