So are those listings specifically from the Playstation umbrella.

I don't think the listings for 'OS' was directly from Sony, but the companies who posted them had history working with Sony.

For the manufacturing of new handheld part it's also not from Sony directly, but there's indeed Sony factory in the area and DPT-inc, who published the listing, has worked with Sony before.

That's pretty damn vague then. More of a could be something than vita successor may be on the way.

Could a Vita 2 with a price of $150~$170 be a threat to the Switch?

With the right games and support it could sell really well I think.

Do you think consumers in a west are going to put any trust in a vita successor when Sony itself ditched the Vita quick sharp. Even in Japan the only place such a thing would make sense it's impact would extremely minor since the vita itself's impact is minor. it won't be a threat at all and if Sony did do it I doubt going after the switch would be the purpose and more refusing to succeed the Japanese portable market to Nintendo by default.

A portable that could play recompiled, portable patched PS4 games might work.
Except that something like that doesn't exist.
And the x86 chipset + AMD gpu the PS4 uses is a lot less efficient than tegra - it'd be bigger, need ventilation and use more battery
And it would be a semi-expensive device
And developmentwise it would need to get downports, which would limit it's library as much is vita's was

Sony seems to have little to gain and a lot to loose with a project like this at the moment. A portable ps4 compatible device in a few years when the technology is there without a lot of investments might make a bit of sense (but still doubtful), right now i just can't see it as a viable project.

They need to keep their focus on PS4, and already have VR as a project they want to invest devtime and push the playstation brand into. Do they really want to add another possibly failing handheld project in there?

As for Minecraft. Kids know it is coming. Kids are aware of when it is coming. But for most of them it won't matter until the physical cart version comes out. It was the same for the WiiU version. Kids knew it was out but they didn't have credit cards so it became real for them when the disc version was released. I am sure a few kids will get the digital version (especially if they have download cards) but I think the majority of kid sales will be physical.

Makes me wonder how Nintendo will sell the paid online. I am guessing as 1 year gift cards?

Precisely, which is why I don't understand why it's been listed as one of the potential system-sellers before Splatoon 2 hits. Kids get games from their parents in most cases, or buy it with their own pocket money, and in both cases it's the physical version they get. Digital for kids is negligible, even in western countries where digital is common place (there's a reason that damn Minecraft keeps charting). Not sure when the retail version will hit, but based on the Wii U version, I'd say sometime in December.

About online, pretty sure it'll be yearly passes (especially if price is as low as Kimishima said it would be).

So apparently there's rumor about Vita successor right now.

Is it happening??

Dubious Sony rumour from well-known Sony-biased affiliate blog

All serious aside another handheld wouldn't make sense since Sony barely supported the Vita after 3 years...I mean Japan sure but NA and EU(maybe some countries) no way.

It'd be interesting to see what a Vita 2 looks like. Sony dropped Vita like a rock even in Japan and considering the market trends aren't exactly in favor of dedicated handheld machines, it strikes me as rather likely a Vita 2 would sell even worse. If Vita's sales weren't enough for Sony to develop games for it, why would it change with a successor? With that in mind the idea of Sony spending a considerable amount of money on developing new games for a handheld platform doesn't seem very reasonable to me.

Maybe a "Vita 2" could be something like a cheap dedicated remote play handheld. A relatively low-key and low-risk device (kinda like PSTV) that doesn't need much support from Sony, but which might be enough to keep loyal Vita fans satisfied and in Sony's ecosystem.

Switch is essentially taking up Sony's traditional handheld market where they sell high-end device. Nintendo's handheld now can play at 720p, have the same power if not more than the Wii U and TV display capability. Sony is free to try, but it is essentially waste of time and resources considering they up against Full House Nintendo line up here.

A gaming tablet could work, a Vita 2 gaming tablet consist of a 6'1 inches tablet, 2 removable dual-cons and a dock. That would be awesome
