Prey (2017) PC performance thread

Little update, now out in the main TALOS station and it is still running perfectly for me. 90fps or there abouts. There are very slight hiccups from the vsync and load pop I'd presume, I'm sure they would be completely eliminated with other vsync methods. It's a good feeling PC port for me with perfect 21:9 support as far as I can tell. It's not an amazing looking game but I am fine with that. It runs well which is most important.

GTX 1080
6700k @ 4.4
16GB RAM
Win10
3440x1440
not the latest driver

Cleans up decently too. (6880x2880)

My VPN unlock isn't working, I've tried VPN gate and F Secure, both attached to Japan and New Zealand. I restarted Steam each time, it took much longer to sign in than normal but defaulted to the UK store and UK unlock times.

Any ideas?

I had to lower the in game mouse sensitivity down to 6 and it feels much better to control before it felt too jumpy with stutters. It defaults in game at 10.

This could all be personal preference though.

Using a Zowie ZA12 at 1600 dpi.

Ugh, Steam has really stepped up on recognizing VPNs or something because it's giving me the hardest time. After a thousand restarts I finally got it to start unpacking, but my session timed out and that was the end of that lol

Can't wait for companies to move past this staggered release bullshit. Just release it at a global time for everyone for fuck's sake.

Yep it's not working for me, tried 3 VPNs now. It's asking for my password every time I change location so it knows something is up.

Did you also sign out of the mobile app and change (not reset) your password?

So audio aside, seems to be running well? Phew!
Aside from those annoying stutters (but not game-breaking like Dishonored 2) it seems to be running very smoothly on my GTX 1070 at 3440x1440. Close to 100 FPS most of the time.
The mouse sensitivity halving when sprinting is awful though. Hopefully someone can find a config option to fix that.

Make sure that you're logged out of Steam anywhere else - including the mobile app.

The game so far seems to be running very well on my PC. I maxed out everything at 1080p except shadows set to high. I am not impressed with the anti aliasing solution though. The input lag at 60 FPS in very responsive and feels like a totally different game from the PS4 version which felt like I was controlling a tank.

I can't even connect to Steam anymore with my VPN. I'm almost ready to hyperventilate..

So they were right when they said the performance would be good?
Thanks Arkane

Can't wait to go home and unlock the game.

Yeah, nothing works. Steam now takes forever to navigate and load pages, but still loads them currency in £. I restarted the VPN (now trying tunnelbear) and got Singapore dollar signs when I refreshed the page, but the unlock option wasn't present for Prey. I restarted Steam and it just went back to £ again. :(

How many people are still running GTX 970s? Let me know how it all turns out, especially when it gets heated.

My system is the exact recommended specs they released. It's running solid at 1080p, 60fps, maximum settings. 80% GPU usage is the highest it's gotten so far. I have an i7 2600k CPU and that's not hit 50% usage at any point.

So with an i7-7700K and a GTX 970, I should be able to do 60FPS at max @ 1080p with no issues then?

Is the console present? (pressing the ~ key should open it) If so, this would open a lot of possibilities, e.g. for hud hide, fov changes etc. on the fly, if not, it obviously sucks.

Hmm, strange. Download VyprVPN (remember to cancel within 72 hours so you're not charged) and try changing your password again before using it, just to be super-duper sure that there are no lingering sessions. I actually had to change my password in order to unpack the game despite the fact that I live in Australia, haha.

BTW, if anyone wants to try out some user.cfg stuff I would be greatful. Perhaps it could help with aliasing and such.

Try this. Make a "user.cfg" file and drop it in the game root directory (so next to system.cfg in the Steam/Prey folder. It should be on the same stem/tree level as the Bin64 folder).

In that user.cfg have the following:
Code:
con_Restricted = 0
r_DeferredShadingFilterGBuffer = 1
r_AntialiasingMode = 3
r_AntialiasingTAAFalloffHiFreq = 6.0
r_AntialiasingTAAFalloffLowFreq = 2.0
r_AntialiasingTAAPattern = 6

And then make sure the in game setting for antialising is SMAA2Tx before you make this config. I wonder if these will work like in other CE games.
What exactly would this do with regards to AA?

Seems to run okay. I have voices, too. There's maybe slightly irregular frame pacing here -- mostly 60 fps, but I'm either getting slight drops here and there or duplicate frames from time to time. Nothing to get too annoyed with as of yet.

A much, much better experience than the PS4 demo.

Getting a constant 110-143fps on the "very high" setting at 1440p on a 1080, using the Prey drivers which just dropped earlier today.

There seemed to be an instance of hitching about every 10 seconds at first but this has gone away. Might have been loading in new UI elements.

Mouselook feels very snappy and nice, not floaty or laggy at all.

GTX 1060 6GB and the game runs at maxed out at 1080p and it doesn't even hit 100% usage at any scenario. Mostly stays between 60% to 80%. I think I could easily play at 1440p if I drop to high settings with a locked 60 FPS. Arkane studio have gained some credibility back after that disastrous launch of Dishonored 2.

My specs:

i5 6600 @ 3,5
1060 6GB
16gb RAM
SSD

runs super smooth at very high preset. I don't have v-sync activated, will do now. I've got 80 to 140 fps, no dips below 80. Locking the framerate at 60 should be no problem.

Only thing I don't like is the audio mixing. Dialogues are too low, music and effects way too loud. Maybe it's just my bad hearing but I don't think the audio sliders in der options menu are working.

This game gives me massive Bioshock vibes and I'm so happy right now :)

I can't stress this enough. Graphically it's pretty much the console versions, but it extremely responsive in comparison. The loading is slashed by less than 1/4 from what I waited on the PS4. Anyone with a GTX 960 and above will fine IMO.

Running this on

3770k (Stock)
16gb 2400mhz RAM
970 OC (180mhz core, 480 mem)

1440p full settings, apart from half resolution screen space occlusion, and getting a steady 70-80 frames.

This thing is a good piece of work.

GTX 1080
i7 6700k
32 GB DDR4
HDD

I'm running it at Ultra Settings (drop textures to medium to reduce stutter) in 1440p and I'm getting well above 110 fps. Great port, except that the audio mixing is messed up. I have to really listen in for the audio logs/calls. The music is way too loud.

For anyone playing at 1440P, do the icons and general interface seem a bit blurry or pixelated?

I played for 30 minutes on my tv with a controller and switched to my monitor and Mouse and Keyboard honestly makes the game so, so much smoother and more fluid to play. Which of course is true of any game but the fast enemies make it more obvious here.

Sounds okay performance wise but I'm going to have to wait for patch to adjust FOV and ideally also allow configuring of HUD. I want to play a game like this with zero HUD and going by demo I want a better FOV on PC.

Shame obvious menu elements have been missed. I know a big chunk of sales will be console but it can't really take that much effort to add those surely?

So after playing for little bit there is nothing to complain about performance. When sprinting it's little weird how your mouse sensitivity gets lowered.

1080p and settings maxed out give me locked 60FPS.

Hey!

"r_DeferredShadingFilterGBuffer = 1" Turns on a FXAA like filter in the G-Buffer which smooths over specular highlights, thus reducing their flicker at the cost of some high frequency detail (though that detail will basically always alias given how the specular is rendered in the material anyway).

All the other commands there just call up the basic SMAA T2x settings except for "r_AntialiasingTAAPattern = 6" which changes the sup-sample count for temporal super sampling to 8 sub samples, arranged in accordance with a so-called alternating halton pattern. There are other numbers you could throw in there other than 6. For example, "4" instead of "6" uses an 8X8 sparse grid (so basically temporal SGSSAA).
