RIP Sir Roger Moore

He was the first Bond that I saw, in Octopussy:

and as a result the standard that I measured other Bond actors against - in my opinion, he was the best.

RIP and Godspeed, Sir Moore

How was it a disaster when they asked him to come back?

Lazenby himself has been pretty candid about how much he butted heads with the crew. Honestly, I'm surprised that EON signed off his entire bit in the documentary Everything or Nothing, because he gets into some pretty unflinching territory with how he was before, during and after OHMSS. I think that Hulu actually just put out a documentary about Lazenby that goes even further into his career decisions.

I have, I still don't get what you're saying. Are you saying it backfired because lazenby turned it down?

Simply put, they lost their cash cow when Connery left. Replaced him with Lazenby for X number of films. Got a good film out of him, but it was a major disappointment at the box office coming off Connery's films. Then their new Bond up and quits. They have no choice now but to overpay Connery to come back, and then they had to recast again. That is a disaster. 3 Bond actors over 3 films in 5 years, with OHMSS only raking in about a third of what Thunderball and Goldfinger did in North America.

Moore brought stability.

Damn. Today is certainly one of them days that i should forget.

R.I.P Sir Roger Moore, my favorite Bond. Might have a beer and watch Live and Let Die this evening in memory.

Shit :(

Not my favorite Bond, but what a Bond. I think I'll be rewatching his run in the next days...

I grew up watching Roger Moore Bond movies back when CityTV used to air them seemingly once a month. Loved them! May he rest in peace.

Everything Or Nothing was a damn good doc. Some great candid stuff in there and it proves without a shadow of a doubt that Dalton is the actor who best understood Bond.

Roger was my favorite. Live and Let Die was my first Bond movie. I grew up loving Bond, and while I don't think he was the best, he was certainly my favorite. I remember being SO excited when he showed up as a guest star on Alias

For something that could have easily been a puff piece, I was really impressed that they let all the various failings over the years play out as is. The segments with Brosnan are particularly brutal, because you can tell that he had to have his heart ripped out twice when it came to the role.

Dalton was Craig's Bond 20 years too soon. A real waste.

RIP Roger.

RIP to Mr Moore. I urge all of GAF to read his autobiography. His UNICEF work was his pride and joy. Plus the rest of his life is jolly interesting

Wasn't Moore technically the first on screen Bond? Didn't he play him on some BBC show in the 50's?

No, that honor belonged to Barry Nelson, as the US TV program Climax! adapted Casino Royale for one of their episodes. I haven't seen it myself, but I have always wanted to since they had Peter Lorre as Le Chiffre, which is pretty tantalizing casting.
