Final Fantasy VII Remake shifts to internal dev under Mobius project leader

Or Kitase.

Or S-E in general, since this hits basically all of their games since FFXII at least once during development.

Hell, I recall news like this even hit during what seemed like mostly smooth development on their new in-house next-gen engine, where they even had some western developers coming in to contribute to creating it, and then seemingly near the finish line (for the first version, since obviously engines are never "done") it seemed like a number of those developers just left rather than S-E getting them to finish the project even if it took some kind of incentive.

Even their portable games take a seemingly long time.

They can at least show off Tifa.... please?

Heh. This. Yes please.

Nomura-san is crazy. [Laughs] His standards were extremely high. He was always concerned about the characters’ eyes, for example — the shapes and sizes of the eyes, the thicknesses of the eyelids. He’d spend a ton of time just on a little curve of an eye. I don’t think he ever gave me a simple approval.
-- Motonori Sakakibara, Movie director, Square

I’m a little bit fickle, so I’m not the type of person to work on one thing and focus simply on that. Say, if I’m drawing — I wouldn’t work on one single piece at a time. It would be more like four or five and I’d rotate between them. Or if I’m working on a design document for a game and I feel I need a change of pace, I’ll start drawing something instead. Or if I need to draw, I might work on different projects to change my mood and get that sort of refresh. So that’s how I prioritize those kinds of things. But if there is a deadline, of course I’ll prioritize that first. (of course)

Sorry, I couldn't help it. But I don't see 2019 as very realistic either, unless they really strip back the first Episode of content.

How long is the first episode going to be though? I don't think they get to the Western Continent in Game 1. That's just my gut feeling.

Hopefully the quality concerns are the battle system bring shit and they are going back to the original turn based system, as god intended.

Hey, a guy can dream.

None of this bodes well for part 1 releasing before 2020.....

They should just cancel this cause this will never come out lol. And this is just "episode 1".

Yeah, I feel ya.

But to be honest, I just hope SE will provide us communication about this immediately. And if they will delay this for a long time, then they should not do episodic release. That's my take on it.

For such a big game that is loved by a lot of people and this remake is massively anticipated, it should have been an internal project from the start. Hopefully they get this right now.

Sounds like a control freak typa person, aka extremely difficult to work with.

Maybe it's good in Japanese culture. This trait certainly isn't something a good leader/boss in a western corporate would have, speaking from my own experience.

Does this mean we have a chance of getting turn-base combat/ATB combat back?

Anything is possible. The more I think about it, the more I expect the project to change significantly.

And really, it's game development, so that's not all that surprising.

I hope this means CC2 finally is free to make a proper .Hack. Who am I kidding, they shot that franchise out back with that abortion of a movie.

That would be a very easy avatar bet. Good luck.

Oh, I'm not betting crap on that. It's Square Enix. Haha.

Considering that all these years they have shown us footage of only one world (Olympus), it will take some kind of a massive effort to release it next year, especially in Spring.

Unless they learned their lesson and decided to wait and do a big blowout reveal. We'll see.

(We also saw the Tangled world, I believe.)

Some ppl can't tell them apart because at some parts they look very similar

The more I think about it, the more the episodic nature seems absolutely insane for this project. If it takes two years or whatever between Episode 1 and Episode 2, the dropoff between them is going to be gigantic.

You are right, we also saw the tangled world but unless i am mistaken it was just one very small area (no i wonder i didn't remember it first).

I really hope this whole episodic thing is done with. Honestly, I would rather take a more linear version of FFVII with an FFX-style map where you just select locations from list if it would get it here sooner and in one full game.

Has episodic ever worked for large games?

Valve failed with it TWICE. Half Life and what ever that other fps was they tried to do in episodic fashion.

I'd rather square take till 2020, release a full complete game and charge $100 for it, than get it piece meal.

But if they do that then Nomura wont get to make his Magnum Opus.

I've worked with Creative Directors like that. It can lead to really polished results. However, there is also a Producer around who (if they are good) can keep things relatively on schedule. In Nomura's case, he has an extreme perfectionist streak while also having (from what I gather) significant control of the project, which is a bad combination. Even worse for a project leader is his seeming lack of focus.

I hope there's enough people around him that are willing to push back, however the fact that they are bringing this all in-house could mean that he wants more control over the fine details. Which may not be a bad thing, but could also be the start of a long, long iterative process that could get himself into the weeds chasing perfection.

At least the game is getting made, however long it takes.

Whenever I get irritated about certain games taking too long, all I have to do is remember Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and realize that nothing is as bad as that.

2,3,4 years? At least it's getting made!

My prediction: This game will never be truly finished.

Part 1 is going to be the highest quality, yet is going to turn many people off.

Part 2 will turn even more people off. Lots of missing sections and details from the original.

By Part 3, most fans will had move on. Square will skip huge chunks from original in order to "finish" the game.

That said, Square will make huge bank from Part1 & 2

Great reasons WHY Nomura shouldn't lead a large scale project. Focusing on many different projects is best when those projects are smaller in scope. When they are something like a FF game, just saying, Nomura doesn't seem like the right type of person to head that of project. Just reading those two quote further cement my opinion that Nomura should never direct a FF game. At most, he should be a visual director when it comes to battles and art direction, and have some say in story concepts, but that's it.

So Nomura is never pleased and can't keep his attention on a single thing.

Sounds like the perfect guy to get a project done right

God this project is so fucked unless he again is moved to another project. A another project meaning some cheap mobile game he can design in the corner away from anything major

I mean...why even do it at all if it's going to be like that.
IMO this was the worst part about FFX.

I swear...everything Nomura takes a lead on turns into a fucking mess. Versus 13/FFXV, KH3, this game. Why do they keep making the mistake of putting him in charge of anything?

I'll ask again since nobody responded to me. How is Square moving this game to internal development Nomura's fault?

Most people here are just using this thread as an excuse to reiterate their Versus XIII theories, sure he probably made some mistakes there, but what does this news have to do with anything?

FF XV all over again. Be surprised if the first part even makes it on the PS4. Probably PS5 bound.

If CyberConnect 2 is free, please make another .hack game. Thanks.

After a discrete TGS'17 trailer, Square-Enix ensues an official statement: "We would like to announce that Tetsuya Nomura has stepped down as director from Final Fantasy VII in order to focus on new breathtaking and promising projects that will shape the future of our company. Hajime Tabata will now take the lead and deliver the product the fans want to play. Thank you".

Hajime Tabata: "While making Final Fantasy VII Remake we want players to play a cohesive story in one go, so the game is no longer episodic from now on"

*3 months later*

Hajime Tabata: "While making Final Fantasy VII Remake we want players to play a cohesive story in one go, so you will get the full experience... by playing the game"

*the game misses an E3, 5 months later*

Hajime Tabata: "While making Final Fantasy VII Remake we want players to experience a story told in all formats and perspectives. Announcing Final Fantasy VII: MidGuard, which tells the events that kick the main game story in motion."

*the movie releases, it's basically the whole first 10 hours of the original game condensed into 50 minutes. Fans start being angry at Tabata. Meanwhile, Sony has announced during E32019 Final Fantasy Versus XV, directed by Tetsuya Nomura, which is described as an alternative fantasy to FFXV, fans go crazy and wishes that Nomura was both directing Versus XV and VIIR*

Hajime Tabata: "While making Final Fantasy VII Remake, we want players to experience a cohesive story which connects the main game to MidGuard and the Crisis Core 2 episode anime. Players who only want to play the game, however, will still get the full picture and will understand everything"

*3 months later, Nomura has released a """"gameplay"""" trailer for Versus XV and it looks freaking good. What we are seeing from the Tabata VII Remake, however, is underwhelming*

Hajime Tabata: "I don't think players should expect to see things from the original vision by old staff that no longer works on the game, but please, this product is still the same as when it was announced?"

*the game is 2 months from being released. Nomura, being the snake he is, uses a poorly drawn signature in a quick artwork to let the fans know that the company doesn't let him show Versus XV until Tabata releases his game. "It's VIIR's turn... sorry for not showing a new trailer, I actually wanted to...". Fans rage.*

Hajime Tabata: "you know what? please watch the movie before playing the game next month..."

*the game releases. You can't visit Midgar City, the only overworld area is the Junon-Midgar continent, you can tell it was rushed to be released. The story doesn't make sense if you don't watch the movie beforehand... and some parts of it were chopped of! Fans are angry that they have to endure this mess of a game which is not even cohesive while Nomura is prohibited to show more of his project*

Hajime Tabata: "when did I say that we wanted to tell a cohesive story? bitch fill the gaps yourself, like..."

*VII R has gained its fanbase, and thanks to the hype, it has sold extremely well. It has been a while since the last time Versus XV got a trailer. People start wondering what is happening to the project*

Tetsuya Nomura: "News from Final Fantasy Versus XV will come, soon".

*However, the news never come. Rumors start surfacing that Versus XV is facing development problems and after the game misses E3'21, S-E releases a statement in which they confirm that they are still working on the game and that players will be surprised the next time they see the game. 3 months later, TGS starts and...*

Square-Enix: "We would like to announce that Tetsuya Nomura has stepped down as director from Final Fantasy Versus XV in order to focus on new breathtaking and promising projects that will shape the future of our company. Kyohei Suzuki will now take the lead and deliver the product the fans want to play. Thank you"

*But Tetsuya Nomura sits at his S-E office about to sign his contract as main director for Final Fantasy XVI, a game that is going to be outsourced because everyone in the company is busy right now. However, Nomura insists that he has the perfect vision for the sixteenth FF game and that it should be made right now.
He has schemed the ultimate plan to take Square-Enix as his. He has destroyed the careers of many rivals: Hiroyuki Ito lives his final days cleaning the toilets of the Akihabara TWEWY café, no one has ever seen Tai Yasue since KH3 launched with 3 playable worlds and 3 minutes of convoluted story and now it is Suzuki's turn. While tickling his hair, he wonders: which other S-E figure should be served as the next pawn? Should he mess with Tabata one more time, or is it Naoki Yoshida's the one that will go next? He will decide that later. It's E3'22 now and the company just debuted the first trailer for Final Fantasy XVI, directed by Tetsuya Nomura, at Sony's conference. During a press conference held the week later, all eyes are on the japanese director*

Tetsuya Nomura: "Oh my god? AM I the person directing this game?? And why is it that I'm finding it out just now? Honestly I had NO IDEA that I was directing this game. Also, why did we even announce it last week? I think that we should be catious, since the game has just entered pre-production. Yeah, FFXVI was announced too soon. Look forward to future announcements. Soon!"

Agreed, all they care about is playing up their narrative.

We've also still got the western definition of episodic luls going again, despite multi-game series being a thing, and them specifically saying it wouldn't be like that since even they and their incompetent PR team knew everyone would take that word and run with it.

Final Fantasy X was the last FF game that didn't had any production problem
It was also the last FF game produced by Sakaguchi

I see a pattern here
