Capcom files trademark for "Monster Hunter: World" in U.S

Again, why does Sony have to worry about Xbox One? In Japan, they're a non-factor. In Europe, they have that market in the bag. In America it's more of a fight, but with everything else all totaled, they don't have anything to worry about. So it wouldn't matter to them at all if the game came out on the Xbox One.

I don't think that Sony paid for exclusivity and more for inclusion and exclusion. So they want a Monster Hunter on the PS4, they want a console Monster Hunter on their own in Japan. If they exclude the NS, they'll have it all to themselves in Japan. Games most likely sell more on the PS4 worldwide, so they don't have to worry about that, either. So Capcom is going to make a console HD Monster Hunter that Sony will have exclusively in Japan.

Now as to why it would be Westernized, I think there's something to be said about this. History says that traditional console Monster Hunter doesn't do as well in Japan. So changing up the formula and adding something different that may appeal to Japan, but also appeal to the Western audiences is good for Sony and good for Capcom. If the game bombs, then Capcom can fall back on traditional Monster Hunter on the NS. The thing is, I think Capcom wouldn't give Sony an exclusive on Monster Hunter. They wouldn't be silly enough to do that, but Sony paying to have a HD Monster Hunter only on their platform in Japan would be the next best thing.

Well, it's basically the same thing. Excluding a game from a competitor's system in a region where you're seeing competition is a reason for the exclusivity. I doubt we'll only see this game exclusive to PS4 in Japan.

The irony is the devs started to not like the product and the original "A" Mon Hun team went back to making a new Nintendo MonHun game while leaving the PS4 game to whoever the heck happens to be at capcom now. Sony would be pissed if this is true.

I'm sure Sony are already pretty pissed at Capcom because of how SFV turned out.

If this is using the Deep Down engine......

That would be pretty exciting. Although, do we know if the engine is even alive (for Capcom, that is)? Since Deep Down has gone completely dark, I'm very worried about the state of that engine. It's very impressive from what we've seen of it.

Mine is pretty and pink
I'm just hoping that the 4chan rumor isn't true because everything about that sounds like a clusterfuck for everyone involved, capcom spreading themselves thin, sony getting a "bad" game that will hurt the reputation of the MH franchise and Nintendo's earlier partnership thrown away for capcom to go to the competition.

Hopefully it's either the tencent MMO or just a change in naming theme for the western localisation of XX for switch.

Pfft, as much as I'd love that you are both delusional. They won't budge on the graphical side. Their "HD" games look like graphically impressive ps2 games. Even with a game for this gen I expect 360/ps3 graphics tops. I'd be pleasantly surprised otherwise though. I don't play MH for graphics anyway. Nothing else out there quite like it. I've tried many other "hunting" games and found none of them as enjoyable.

Yes, Europe is a Sony stronghold but NA sales make it so the gap is not double or close to it unless you factor in the rest of the world.

Re: EDarkness post

If you look at the rumor, it falls apart. It begins with saying that Sony is desperate for Japan. Lets assume that to be factually true. Sony then enters into a contract with Capcom to make Monster Hunter 5 for PS4 excluding Switch as a possibility. Apparently Sony does not care about PC (makes sense) or Xbox versions (makes no sense given this console generation). So already, something doesn't add up. But lets not dismiss the rumor there.

The rumor then goes on to state how this title will be different than past MH games and focused more so on the west. It'll be simplified, streamlined, cutback and what have you. That's where it all falls apart. Sony got into a contract because they were desperate for Japan, and then funded a game that appeals to an entirely different region?

The rumor then says traditional Monster Hunter will be on the Switch. At that point, you know the rumor is a bunch of bullshit. So... Sony was so desperate for Japan they funded a Monster Hunter game completely different than predecessors, aimed at a different market all the while letting Nintendo have the traditional Monster Hunter titles appear on their platform?

That shit makes no fucking sense. A drunk could come up with a more logically coherent rumor that doesn't flip every other sentence. How does that solve anything for Sony all the while having them fund a different MH game for all the platforms?

The issues I'm seeing in this thread that is distorting what the rumor depicted:

1. It seems a lot of people have seen varying rumors...with added things in here

2. WHAT? You cannot possibly be serious when telling me Sony is DESPERATE for Japan. NieR, P5, GG, BB, Tales Of, almost every popular JRPG is on the PS4. Tell me why would they be desperate? They are the only console that offer these games...

This deal is for Capcom. They've said it themselves in 2015, something along the lines of - "wanting the monster hunter name to grow throughout the world". They have minimized their studio to only truly focus and specialize on a few titles, so an ambitious change like this will require some help, and Sony were the ones to step up; and Capcom knew they were their best bet.

And AGAIN in APRIL of 2017 where they revealed a major title will be out by 2018, they have showed their idea of "a successful franchise" and theres a slide there that SHOWS them, themselves saying after the IP becomes known, they will begin to 'rework' the IP, showing a picture of MH.

The rumor simply brought in light the IDEA of MH on console, further research shows that it 100% makes sense. Some parts of the rumor may be off, but it's most likely a PS4/PC title. Worlds is LITERALLY the perfect name, this game has crazy potential

Lol. Dragon's Dogma already is going in the direction of a "westernized" MH, so that is bullshit.
Noone can say something about the quality before seeing actual gameplay or at least get real infos about that.
That game is a really good case against open world Monster Hunter.

All the tedious shit in Monster Hunter is REALLY tedious in Dragon's Dogma.

OT but awesome avatar that Ape Escape greatness yo, always hoping it'll appear in E3 ah

3U is probably over million by now (700k+ 3DS + 300k+ Wii U) and 4U did 1.5m in the west. Tri and Generations were each just under a million at around 800k and 900k respectively.

It makes me a little curious how much higher Capcom thinks a high budget PS4/XB1/PC Monster Hunter would do in the west?

I'm sure it would do pretty well. I think they should only go after it if they can manage cross platform. I know you didn't mention Switch but it would be on that system regardless, in that case that's what I'm buying it for. In the meantime, I plan to give Dauntless a chance.

I have a feeling that this new game will be similar to MH3 in terms of content. (echoing the 4chan rumor)

MH3 was a big step for the franchise in terms of animations and gameplay. It was a huge generation jump, but because of that the dev team didn't have enough time to add lots of monsters, weapons and armors. They could only do so much in a couple years of development.

I feel like MHW will suffer the same fate. And if that happens I'm hoping for updates post launch.

Praying for GL and LS users. ⛪

First thing, MH is nothing like a fighting game, full stop, and referring to as such is weird even if I do think it's possible to stretch the definition so wildly it can technically fit.

The game is skill based, and encouraging the player to fight the same monster multiple times to get the armor they oh so dearly want is another way to improve the player's skill at the game. There is a lot of thought put into each monster, it's animations, it's move combinations, etc. If you could beat it on a or twice and have a full set of armor, you're only increasing your stats rather than your skill, and most monsters, even well designed ones like the Zinogre, would see players run through it once and then never again until they get to the next rank.

So... it's like a fighting game, then?

Action games and RPGs don't make you overcome the same challenge again and again in order to build your familiarity with (and thus, your skill against) specific foes.

Dark Souls give you fewer souls for fumbling through Ornstein and Smough. Bayonetta doesn't gate your progress because you didn't ace that previous mission.

As you said, progress in MH rests largely with the player's skill, with stats acting more as a way to even the playing field than anything that gives the player a true advantage. It's rare that an MH game allows you to trivialize monsters through stats, even in the endgame, so you could consider it almost 100% skill.

And since these are typically 1v1 fights based largely on knowledge of enemy attack animations, i-frames, gauge management and mastery of your own moveset... fighting game.

Yup, I totally agree with this, I wouldn't expect a ton of content either.

Guns and Axes are already in MH :p

In the Monster Hunter art book, there are illustrations of the Whip being an actual weapon type. Maybe we'll get that?

Whips would be cool. I'd also love for MH to get a spear weapon. I'm not fond of the huge shields of the lance and gunlance.

Imagine if Monster Hunter World is a colaboration between Capcom + Japan Studio & genDesign? And it's mix between MH Gameplay with some caracteristcs and narrative ala Shadow of the Colossus? Am i dreaming too much? Fumito Ueda hinted a few months ago that their next game will be some kind of "open world game" .Who knows?

I really liked the Hunting Hound concept that was in the MHG artbook. That or combine it with the Halk pet from Frontier. Like a Falconer (Wyverner?) weapon class.

That engine is dead. There's a higher chance this is on RE engine or Unreal. One of the articles awhile back even said that RE Engine was basically the replacement for that engine so they could start deving games again back in house for things they don't want to use UE4 on

It's most likely going to be multi-plat (Xbox One/PS4/PC) so probably not going to happen

I really hope MHW is multiplatform* and not shackled to the Windows store. Capcom needs to spread that franchise to everyone they can. Others must know the thirst for the hunt.

*(no switch only if it'd cause design limitations)
