$500 is probably a reasonable price for the hardware they're putting in that thing, but is a terrible thing place to be in the current market where they're already down against a PS4 Pro that's $100 dollars cheaper (and whichever Sony could probably price-cut further). It needs to feel like a brand new console to justify that it price to people, so today's games better impress.

I think MS is just trying to be fair to themselves, why sell it at a lost if it can do all of what most are expecting it to do?
I believe most Xbox one owners will trade in their Xbox one and get a huge discount on the scorpio, that's what most of my friends did with their PS4 to get a Pro. None of them paid anywhere near $399 for it.
That's if $499 turns out to be true.

This is alot better system too.

At launch the PS4 was almost identical to the XBO.

This is a step up on the PS4 and Pro.

The day the Scorpio news went up on DF, I looked at my Pro and literally "What is the point of you."

A friend was telling me on friday that he went to Gamestop to spend some store credit, and the employees weren't at the counter. He could hear them in the back, apparently they got their Scorpio materials and were talking about how "they couldn't believe it was only $399"

Obviously anyone can make up that sort of shit but I trust him on it. He knows I don't care so he's not telling me to be a console warrior or something, it's just a funny thing to stumble into. You'd be better off buying a $500 GPU and throwing it in your PC.

That's assuming you have all the other parts for the PC already. If you don't it's a much bigger investment. If you want reasonably high end graphics without going all in, Scorpio should serve the purpose.

Because if they can afford to cut the price on the Pro and were going to do it anyway then doing it tomorrow after MS announces a $500 box would be a great way to make the Pro look like a good value proposition and for folks to not bother waiting for the Scorpio.

But it will already look like a good value proposition and it's already been selling well and even been supply constrained in some places.

They'd just be throwing away revenue to drop the price now when they could wait till closer to the Scorpio launch.
