Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Man I can se it now.

Phil getting ready to announce the price of Scorpio, a graphic shows $499. Then phil turns around to see it and says "wait that's not right". Then the graphic shows $399 and the crowd goes wild.

I see two possibilities here:

1) Either Microsoft wants to get the bad news out of the way right now
2) The price has been "leaked" to Keighley early so Microsoft can undercut it at their press conference.

I do think it's suspect though, Windows Central have insider sources at Xbox and have had a high success rate with any info they've had, so surely they'd have known about this first? Does Keighley usually leak info like this at E3?

I can only think of two scenarios:

Keighly is playing a part in the marketing.
He says $500.
MS announces $500... no wait, they've suddenly decided to slash it to $400, and they come out as champions for 'listening to the fans' and lowering the price.
Keighly's reputation is tarnished and no one gives a shit about what he says in future.
(Actually I think his reputation is already tarnished but that's just me)

OR...

The $500 price point is real.
People start laughing at MS for making it so expensive.

Is he really in the habit of doing stuff like this?

I don't believe him. I think he may be floating a trial balloon for Microsoft with this tweet.

I recall a lot of people covering E3 in 2013 were certain PS4 would be $499 24 hours before it was surprisingly announced at $399. The euphoria over that price was significant. Curious if MS is trying to replicate that euphoria today or are prepping people so they aren't disappointed.

I just don't understand a mid-generation refresh that is pricier, just to play games that look better, on a console that is last and pales in comparison with both 3rd party exclusives/arrivals and 1st party exclusives

I know they had to do something totally different to PS Pro because otherwise they'd just be continuing their pattern of being competitively last, but it just seems like a poor investment.

I really just don't get why they can't invest in new IPs, and build them up so that by the time PS5 and Xbox 4 comes out, they can then have a good portfolio for software

This is my bet too.

This would make more sense imo if this was done like a week ago. Why do something like this mere hours before your conference? You could just announce the price and it would have the same impact.

I'm not saying it isn't going to be $400, but maybe MS isn't working in conjunction with Geoff either.

Would it be crazy to announce the price at $499, but "because of how much we believe in the system and our fans" we are doing a limited price discount of $100 for the first 3/6 months?

Yeah I know it would be never happen. I just think it would motivate people to buy now, rather than the usual "I'll wait for the price drop"

It's DoA if it's that price. No console has been able to succeed at that price especially when the competition is so strong and cheaper. And especially as it's playing the exact same games. It certainly won't help them gain any difference outside the US where they are really struggling. Pretty suicidal to put it out there for that. Obviously MS are going for early adopters and tech savvy gamers who have 4K TVs and want the best 3rd party performance on console. But that's a hefty price tag to ask no matter the spec.

If Scorpio is going to be that much better than Xbox One, I still don't know how they continue the closed console structure.

Even PS4 Pro is selling 1-in-5 for every new console sold. This isn't even counting the install base already in place. How are they going to sell developers on giving a shit about developing better versions of games for potentially 1-in-10 consoles sold on a much smaller pool of players over on Xbox?

Watching the EA press conference yesterday, they made it seem like I would be stupid to buy the old version of Madden compared to Scorpio. MS might as well be starting from scratch.

How does this work when people can buy every title that used to be Xbox exclusive on any PC? How do you still cultivate a dominant closed platform? I don't understand how the business model still works and at the same level.

In order for $499 to be a decent price for Scorpio, it would need to include 2 out of 3 things below:

a) 2 TB HDD

b) bundled game, physical copy

c) 1-year sub to Xbox Live Gold.

No pro price cut then, unless Sony is feeling particularly cruel

That's an insane price. Maybe the ram prices screwing them over because there is nothing else that should cost so much more than the pro

Maybe ms don't care about volumes and just want a high margin product? I don't get it

Geoff wouldn't, ever, put his credibility at risks. He managed to pop out some infos before and he was right.

Logic dictates that it'll go for $499; Microsoft will be selling this to the die-hard fans so you'd expect they'd want to get as much profit on each console sold as they can, at least initially.

However, I still reckon they'll sell it at $399. That robot advert is too big of a coincidence, plus Geoff doesn't normally do these sort of leaks. Microsoft saw how powerful the 'used games allowed' and other similar statements were for the PS4 and I think they'll try to emulate this 'better than reduced expectations' tactic for themselves. Plus MS has shown that they are willing to take a hit for boosted mindshare in the long run.

So yeah, I'm sticking my flag firmly in the $399 tent.

If you want to read some dumb anecdotal shit to believe at your own risk:

A friend was telling me on friday that he went to Gamestop to spend some store credit, and the employees weren't at the counter. He could hear them in the back, apparently they got their Scorpio materials and were talking about how "they couldn't believe it was only $399"

Obviously anyone can make up that sort of shit but I trust him on it. He knows I don't care so he's not telling me to be a console warrior or something, it's just a funny thing to stumble into. Again believe at your own risk but I was already expecting $399 anyways so it's not terribly outrageous

I'm sorry but either your friend made this up, misheard it or the employees were making stuff up. There is absolutely no way that random Gamestops have received detailed information about Scorpio at this time.

FYI, price was determined a looooooong time ago. MS isn't reading this thread and thinking oh boy they're mad let's drop price. Is that how people actually think companies are run?

I remember this so I'm skeptical

The latter (bolded) seems the most plausible one.

Dead in the water in Europe. Nobody cares about Xbox when they are cheaper or have price parity with Playstation and they want to charge 100 Euro more? Good luck.

Another reason I hope this is a ruse and it's only 399 is that I want Sony to drop the price of the pro as I'm def picking that up end of this year for GoW and BF2, etc! If scorp is 499 they may not feel they need to lower pro.

They'd have to bundle it with an elite controller and a game of my choice to justify $500 at launch. Specs are good and I do need a new console with a working disc drive but I can wait a couple of more months for a price drop or a get it as a Christmas gift
