Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

I've said it before but I'm not sure what it is about Scorpio that created such heavy delusions.

There was the Ryzen and Vega thing where certain people were dead set on it.

There was the 399 thing.

And there were also people convinced it was going to release in August or September despite the marketing materials explicitly saying *holiday."

Not sure I've ever seen a console release with such fervent belief of total nonsense before.

Hope and desperation from a community that is desperate for a win.

I doubted Geoff and he was spot on. I can see why he added the cavet "unless something changes" too. The announcement had no price graphic, not "preorder now," nothing. All it would have taken to change the price is him saying another number.

Just came here to shame myself:

He/Microsoft succeeded.
Half of the people here took the bait.
I can already see it:

In your interview with Phill, you will ask him "how come the price is 399$ if I know for a fact it was 499 in the rehearsal"

Phill with a smug face: "HOOK LINE AND SINKER MUHAHA", "Oh and thanks for playing along".
But its going to be 399$.
Now what?

I deserve it.

Well at least its something different. If it was Pro priced it would've been Pro powered too. What's the point in another console with a similar power to the Pro? They have pretty much the same games, save for a few handful of exclusives that can easily be ignored in favor of all the multiplats and other exclusives.

If they aren't different in power, they are pretty much the same thing. I think this should be cool for anyone with a giant 4k tv and willing to shell out the cash. It might not be for everyone, but people with giant 4k tvs, and the number is slowly growing, you need something like this.

I legitimately thought people were joking about that Radio Electronics cover but wow, some of you really are that stupid. Congratulations.

I was out of the loop with the pictures of the robot. I just googled the teaser videos and wow, haha.

Is there any chance that MS didn't want to talk about price yesterday but felt like they had to because of Geoff? Felt weird they didn't even show the price on screen.

I felt they didn't show price on screen because they knew it wouldn't be a positive reaction. But what do you expect? Thing is liquid vaper cooled with 12 gigs of gddr5 and runs at 6tflops.

I know, that may seem pricy... but I can't build a 4k capable gaming pc for $499. Let alone one that's liquid cooled. They even claimed to have invented a new power delivery system. Be interesting to see if this system makes it way to pcs.

That's basically the problem. I can buy into an expensive Switch because they offered me Zelda Breath of the Wild day one and I know 100% I'm going to get some Nintendo games on it. I can sort of buy into a PS4 Pro because they showed Horizon, which looks gorgeous on a HDR screen.

But they threw out a $650 AUD console, more than the price of a Nvidia Corporation GTX1080 when eBay or Amazon has one of their relatively commmon discounts, without any real compelling Xbox One X only exclusives to someone who doesn't really care a whole lot about racing games.

Next year MS will put the onus on Sony. Phil should say that he truly believes that all games should be multi-plat and should look the best where player's decide. Phil will say he approached Sony about bring it's First Party games to MS and vice versa. "I would loves games like Horizon and Uncharted on my Xbox One X." Sony will of course refuse and Phil will be able to say he tried but Sony is holding industry back. Quote me.

I don't know what I'm talking about...

Phil's new strategy... is to port beg other platforms' first party games?

He really is playing 4D chess isn't he.

Yea, I'm on the shame wall. I'll own up to it and eat crow.

Didn't think MS would go $499 at all. They had a completely tepid Xbox One X showing and then you add the price on top... yeesh.

They're not even trying to compete any more it feels like.

You really don't, lol. Plus, if MS was so into "openness" and games being available everywhere, they'd have their titles on Steam already.

My guess is that they know the second they put up a giant "$499" on the screen, images come out of Phil with that as the backdrop, and it becomes a meme. Happened with Kaz, and same with Mattrick.

I was team $399 because I didn't expect MS to not attempt to expand their current market share this gen. This move is basically a white flag.

At 499 my consensus is still they are mostly targeting this at rebuys for owners that are already invested in the Xbox One platform.

I can't believe its not 399. Pretty much the entire internet agreed anything above 399 was trouble unless it was an elite controller bundle.

It's obvious that this console is for people that already have a current gen console and many of them will more than likely get the system via trading in their current one (especially if Xbox due to game compatibly) so in that sense I feel the majority of Xbox One X owners will not pay $499 for the system.

I do think that the Xbox One X will not do well after December if it stays $499. Really needs to get to $399. A $399 announcement would have been huge this E3.

Did Geoff talk to Phil yet? Is he scheduled to at some point this week?

That interaction should be good. If not, maybe the GB guys will. Jeff is usually good about not really pulling punches (e.g. the "when are games going to stop shipping broken?" question)

To all the 'It should have been $399' posters. You do realise it is a choice of 'It should be faster than the PS4 Pro' and 'It should cost as much as the PS4 Pro' you can only have one.
People in the know have repeatedly tried to prepare you lot for $499 for a while now.

And apparently it's still going on. What exactly would MS gain by leaking the price a couple of hours before the official reveal? It just causes confusion and in this case people were setting themselves up for disappointment because they think it's a marketing ploy. The "soften the blow" argument is complete bullshit as well. Soften the blow for whom? The people that care enough to check E3 rumours a couple of hours before the conference? The best way to control that message is to announce it on the official stage in the context of a lineup they think is worth the price of admission, not through a twitter message and a couple of GAF posts.

Geoff caught wind of the information and decided to post it because he wasn't bound by any NDAs or the like. It's not particularly exciting but that also means it's probably true.
Too high expectations could make an OK announcement feel like a bad one. 499 is perfectly reasonable for what Scorpio packs, maybe MS is even losing money on it. But if you are expecting 399, you won't be happy with 499.

I thought it was $399 because I never would have expected Microsoft's Xbox division to commit ritualistic suicide on stage.

Eh, I get that point of view, but I don't think they had much choice.

Shareholders have been asking MS to spin off Xbox division for years, and even though Nadella said he won't, I never thought it was realistic that they'd price to lose money. That would have been a very tough sell.

Why would something released a year later, with the same amount of power, cost the same amount? The Iphone 7s will surely be faster than the iphone 7 and will launch at the same price.

Better specs, a year later, and $100 more expensive. Up hill battle man.

I can't believe Crackdown 3 looked bland, that was supposed to be the one game that would be their shining exclusive jewel. I can probably run that thing on my old EVGA GTX 760 SC, (just sold rx 480 for $390 thanks to miners and the 480 shortage. Bring on Vega!!)

I haven't even considered that they might be making a profit from it. That would explain things.

Yea, it would be really interesting to see the BoM for the Xbox X. I would have assumed they would price it so The console + a year of XBL makes it so they breakeven like PS4 did with launch. The machine itself must be more expensive to produce than expected because i can't imagine they have a large margin on it.

It is based on the same technology. There have been very marginal improvements since the Pro launched and anything better /will/ cost more.
If MS could/were to price it closer to Sony's proposition, Sony would have more price flexibility to undercut them. It's a losing proposition either way.

:bows: to senor Keighley.
I really hoped they wouldn't go with that dumbass $499 price. Yet here we are.
$499 is for the 1TB SKU. Expect a 2TB SKU for more.
Five hundred and ninety nine US Dollars.

For the specs, I don't think the price is bad. But they've put themselves in a difficult position. Seems to me this appeals only to:

A: People who don't have a gaming PC and haven't owned a XB1.
B: People who own a XB1 and are willing to pay $500 for better visuals.

I kinda fall into group A, and I think this could be a purchase in my future, but not at $500.

Just for the record, there's a difference between being wrong and being crazy.

Thinking US$500 was too much and that US$400 would have been the final price? Wrong but reasonable.

Thinking this was an orchestrated ploy, a conspiracy for a mic drop moment? That's crazy. People believe these fantastical narratives instead of accepting that things tend to be closer to what they actually look like than what an anime plot would suggest.

The shame part of that wall of shame wasn't being wrong about the price - no shame in missing a number. It's in anybody over the age of 14 (I'll excuse our Neoyounglings for doing these things) who still thinks in these terms. Like, even if Geoff had been wrong and the final price was actually higher, or lower, suggesting he was in on it as some sort of psyops marketing? I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's such a weirdly specific and odd thing to believe is "obvious" the way so many here did.

Stay weird, GAF.

Well I'll be. It's $499 after all. I always take rumors with a grain of salt, regardless of the source. I didn't expect it to be $499, but I was wrong!

On topic - guess I'm sticking with my XB1S. Glad I got it during the black friday deals for a great price.

I'm guessing you missed E3 2013.
