E3 2017: METROID PRIME 4 IS NOT DEVELOPED BY RETRO, STILL HAS LONGTIME SERIES PRODUCER
Share. Metroid’s Switch debut is from a new development team, but will maintain Kensuke Tanabe as producer.

BY ANDREW GOLDFARB

Nintendo has revealed that the recently-announced Metroid Prime 4 is not developed by Retro Studios, the developer who made the first three games.

Instead, Nintendo’s Bill Trinen revealed at a group interview that the game is being built by a “talented new development team.” Despite the shift, the game will still be overseen by longtime producer Kensuke Tanabe, who produced the previous Metroid Prime games.

Beyond that, Nintendo didn’t reveal additional details about development, but did confirm that the game is still a first-person adventure and will be released “beyond 2017.”

Back in 2015, Tababe told IGN what he wanted in a new Prime sequel, explaining that there is "still more I want to build around the story of Sylux and Samus. There’s something going on between them. I want to make a game that touches upon [it]." He added at the time that "in that eventual game between Sylux and Samus that might get made, that I want to involve the [Galactic] Federation as well." For now, we don't know if this will actually be the story of Metroid Prime 4 or if plans have changed since then.

Earlier today, Nintendo confirmed Metroid Prime 4, but only revealed that it’s “now in development for Nintendo Switch.”

Stay tuned to IGN for more Nintendo news, and find all of the big announcements from the show in IGN’s E3 hub.

Hoping this new team doesn't fuck it up.

Also, what the fuck is Retro working on then, and why wasn't it shown? It has to be near completion after 3+ years in development.

Retro making new IP or another DK game it seems after hearing this. Interesting...hope this turns out well for Nintendo.

Please tell me it is not possible this "new Team" is Mercury Steam and the Metroid 2 Remake is for them get familiar with the franchise.....Please tell me this is not what's happening....

I mean, anything is possible, but I don't think any part of this makes any sense at all

I'm happy with the announcement(s) of both Metroid games and how Tanabe is still producing it. New team sounds promising to me actually, as it might give some new wind in the series that it might need actually.

Want to see more, very promising in theory.

I'm kind of conflicted. I have confidence in Tanabe and Nintendo to deliver a solid Metroid game, but I'll always wonder what could have been

but Retro Studios is great and I'll support whatever they make

If it's EAD l'm honestly even more excited. Young EAD developpers have done some amazing work on Splatoon and Breath of the Wild. lf they can do the same with Metroid then we might see a franchise revival.

It's important to remember that, while Retro is still extremely talented, most of the people responsible for the Prime trilogy are no longer there.

That's insanely good news to me. Now I can keep dreaming about DK games from Retro AAAAAAND get Metroid Prime 4 by an internal Nintendo team.

Just the best of both worlds.

That's fine, Retro has changed a lot and internal teams are fantastic. Even Prime 3 was a pretty vast difference from 1 and 2.

The more disappointing part of this news is that relationship garbage between Samus and Sylux. I just hope that this game isn't a complete subjugation of the character like Other M was.
