Magic: the Gathering |OT11| Amonkhet - Have you ever had decks with a Pharaoh?

Unstable = Barf.

Comedy is hard, and I've never laughed at anything WoTC has ever produced. I am fully braced for horrible memes and more MTG in-jokes that are not funny. Still buying at least a handful of packs.

Memes would be shockingly more topical than any Unset has ever been.

Expect the usual non-topical humor, like untranslatable Jace puns and how some vegetables have funny names.

um...

Nissa?
Gisela?
Bruna?

er...

Elbrius?
Westvale Abby?

Are they going to count the flip cards from Kamigawa for this?

Thing in the Ice, Arlinn, and Duskwatch Recruiter are all good ones from SOI. I would laugh hard if we saw Ulrich. We're probably going to get a few flavour cards that aren't really playable, such as Elusive Tormentor and Startled Awake.

titi, daybreak ranger (lol), duskwatch recruiter that's all I got
Arlin and Thing I could see. Duskwatch is an uncommon though, would be pretty feel bad IMO...
Duskwatch recruiter sees more play than Alrinn ever will. And Delver is a common

Annoyed at the naming for the Masters sets.
What is different between:
Eternal Masters
Iconic Masters
Masters 25?

Edit: really looking forward to Ixalan.

Delver is a common and it will definitely be there :p

My guess: Delver, 5 flip walkers, Huntmaster, Avacyn, Westvale Abbey, Elbrus, Garruk, Mayor of Avabruck, Thing in the Ice, Brisela halves.

Might be too much value for them though.

Guys.

I know Delver is a common. I own a million of them.

But it's iconic. Duskwatch is not, plus it's SUPER recent.

If you're spending $50 - $80 on a special foil box set, the last thing you want is a bunch of uncommons and commons, even if they're more playable.

Delver is a given, I think. That's a common. If they include Duskwatch, which is possible, that's pretty much about as low as I would think they'd dip rarity wise.

Poor Arlin.

They print commons and uncommons in these all the time. Beseech the Queen and Tolaria West were uncommon, and Cabal Ritual was common. Serra Angel was uncommon. Firespout and Virtue's Ruin were uncommon.
Right but not without reason

Tolaria West -- niche card with value as it hasn't been reprinted in a while
Cabal Ritual -- Iconic card
Serra Angel -- Iconic, and also didn't it used to be rare way back when?
Firespout -- Sideboard card that has value, hadn't been reprinted in a while
Beseech -- I don't even know it haha

Just saying, if they're already stretching into cards that JUST went out of print for a set called From The Vault, maybe that's a bad sign about your theme.

Okay, so some thoughts.

  • It makes a certain amount of sense with a "New World" angle, but combining dinosaurs and pirates is an interesting way to address those two particular long-time requests. I wouldn't have really pegged Vraska as a pirate but I can see how it works, I guess.
  • I am exceedingly pleased that they went with proper feathered dinosaurs here.
  • We can now see exactly how the mechanics swiped from Ixalan fit: the Monarch mechanic probably represented control of their El Dorado city, and vehicles were probably ships.
  • It seems like whatever setting angle I take it upon myself to do a fan design for winds up being printed right afterwards, so let me know now what you want to see come out in 2019.
  • Interesting that they're doing a multiplayer variant tied so closely to a setting. Curious how that winds up working out.
  • 25th Masters is along the lines of what I was suggesting with a reprint product, and it could be pretty fun -- and provide shots to reprint a few things that are tough to do elsewhere. I'm much more concerned about Iconic Masters, which I don't see a way to actually make worth $10.
  • FTV: Transform, aka here's a foil baby Jace and Delver plus some other junk.
  • I assume there'll be some element of creative theming to Core 2019, I kind of wanted them to tease this out a little bit more.
  • Dominaria is exactly what we've been saying for years now, but actually better. Getting Garfield for this is kind of a coup. The last two sets Richard Garfield worked on are the legit all-time best, so I've got high hopes here.
  • An Un-set... well, it's not how I would've done it. This must be Maro's anniversary gift from the company, lol. For everyone this sort of thing annoys it'll get it out of their system.
  • Really thought we'd see the back half of the year stuff still -- curious if anything else is 25th Anniversary themed beyond what we see here.

Duskwatch is gonna become iconic eventually he's already right behind Delver below rare DFCs. It was a major player in standard, is about to be a major player in modern and an all star in EDH.

Yess no more lizards.

Pretty sure they'll still be Lizards. Creature - Lizard Beast Dinosaur.

Anyway, here's my (very optimistic) guess for the FTV:

Archangel Avacyn
Bruna, the Fading Light
Gisela, the Broken Blade
Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
Delver of Secrets
Thing in the Ice
Elusive Tormentor
Bloodline Keeper
Geier Reach Bandit
Garruk Relentless
Duskwatch Recruiter
Mayor of Avabruck
Huntmaster of the Fells
Elbrus, the Binding Blade
Westvale Abbey

I think realistically that's probably too much value. I wouldn't be surprised to see Jace and/or Avacyn get left out.

So, Dominaria YES.
Two Masters sets in a few months YES YES.
Unwhatever, fuck it.
Ixalan looks pretty cool too. I wonder how they will do Mounts mechanically? It IS a way to make Dinosaurs more than vanilla fatties, so I'll give them that.

I'm curious to see what special treatment they'll give the lands in Unstable. I absolutely love the Unhinged basics.

The Ixalan description mentions mounting dinosaurs, so perhaps crew, which we know was stolen from Ixalan, originally represented that. Monarch, also originally from there, probably represented taking control of the map to the city, since the city itself isn't mentioned as being reached until the second set.

25 Anniversary Masters seems like an interesting idea. We're getting a lot of "Masters" sets though

Even without memes I still don't get the appeal of MTG in-jokes and puns as a draft-able set/designed product. I know people say it can be fun to play with some friends...but how does that actually work when the cards don't actually make any sense?
I don't like it, so no one should have it!!!!

What are the chances they mix in some other black-bordered cards (even aside from a new set of full art un-lands) to entice a wider audience to buy sealed product/ What kind of stuff could they add?

The flavor of Monarch(IE Draw a card during endstep) fits the idea of controlling a map more then randomly being the Monarch.

I'd like to throw my hat into the ring for UnSet3's Basic Lands and suggest that they will be No Art Lands, with full text.

They doubled down on Iconic Masters being more about the iconic creature types but what about the spells? I neeeeeeeed more info.

Also I think they say in the video that Masters 25 will have a card from each set. Interesting! Was it 7th that did that before, maybe 8th Edition?

I don't know how they sell this set in general now that everyone is up to their assbones in full-art lands.

Yes and yes.

Literally the one thing I wanted to learn about to day I didn't LOL

Wait, which?

Preduction: Un3 still won't sell lol

I mean Maro's whole pitch has literally been that it doesn't have to sell because if they print it the way they print other supplementals nowadays it can sell out a small run and be profitable, lol. (By which I mean: yes.)

Oh, also: tough break for kirblar because there gonna be hella vehicles in Ixalan.

Really really unclear how this set is gonna work, lol. The Reserved List is more visibly a restriction on their product design with every passing year.

It was 8th Edition, and it was a pretty crappy promotion ultimately since their choices had to be mediated by the ultra-restrictive core set reprint rules. This has a lot more opportunity to be spicy, and especially to reprint some stuff from early sets that isn't super tournament-relevant but does have some cachet and value.

Of course it won't. Nobody wants it, but Maro has probably been bitching about it for a decade and they finally gave in.

These sets hit a niche audience, but it's really just not true that nobody wants it. There's plenty of other stuff that sells to similar sized niches that people just don't care enough to be mad about.

Do we have any data to support that Planechase, Archenemy and Conspiracy sold well?

Another weird thing I noticed: 25th Masters has the 3-character code "M25" but Core 19 is continuing the old numbering as "M19." So... what are they gonna do about that?

Do we have any data to support that Planechase, Archenemy and Conspiracy sold well?

We can independently verify that Conspiracy 1 sold well as it went through several consecutive batches of printing. In general we can be fairly certain that Planechase and Conspiracy did well but Archenemy less so. The Un-set probably sells at least to an audience as big as Archenemy.

Let's just get all this out of the way:

Flip basic lands (between day/night versions).
Fuse basic lands (make your own duals).
Aftermath basic lands?

I still remember the day when they revealed Dwarven Demolition Team as Alpha's never-before-reprinted contribution to 8th Edition.

(6), Tap, sacrifice Magic Christmas Land: Search your library for a combo piece, reveal it, and explain the combo to your opponents. If they agree it's a combo, put the card in your hand. Then shuffle your library.

Oh, and we're definitely going to get a black Spike, a white Mel, and a red Vorthos.

So happy to hear about Un-3. I guess they were finally able to to justify the costs and Maro went full speed ahead after he got the greenlight. I'm sure it'll be fun for a draft or two.

Another Masters set has me concerned about fatigue. I might skip one or the other honestly.

Un3 masterpieces should be silver boardered P9/Dual Lands with MTGO Art and otherwise normal frames. Gets them into cube and casual player hands, doesn't violate the reserved list, and gives people a reason to buy packs

Vorthos' feels distinctly Blue to me. Johnny would be red, with Timmy being Green?

Joke idea: make the Profile 5, so stuff like:

A Jonny Vengenant R
Timmy Fatty-Caster G
Mel the Mechanist W
Vorthos the Seeker U
Spike the Forceful B

(The entire idea is built around a Jonny Vengenant, not going to lie)
