Also, I just want to add, it's amazing how after Galaxy, many of us were like, "Where could Mario possibly go next?" And then Odyssey blew our minds with exotic new locations we never knew we wanted but that look SO GOOD!

I do have to wonder, though,

where does 2D Mario goes from here next? I feel like they've exhausted the formula and any attempt would result in series fatigue.

we've gone through level 1-1 like 10 times already. in different games, not sure how can they spice things up.

I'm more impressed they managed to one up themselves on the (potential) creativity of the gameplay situations.
I thought galaxy 1+2 kinda exhausted the subject and from interviews at the time (and well, the fact that they came up with 3D land/world) it felt like something they were aware of.

Wait a sec. Does the map just list all the enemies in each kingdom ?

No, just some. Cheep cheep isn't listed for example, and enemies can be in multiple kingdoms but are only listed in one.

Speaking of enemies, I will be very surprised if New Donk City doesn't have skipsqueaks:

They added an urban version of stingby, which first appeared in 3D Land (not Mario 64, Treehouse). They look like flies and start out as maggots. Mario wiki thinks they are mosquitos but they are wrong.

So an urban rat enemy would be nice, too. Maybe these guys from Paper Mario and NSMB instead:

The way I see it the "hub" will be the Odyssey. Likely you go to the globe on the ship and choose your destination from there.

Locations like New Donk City, Tostarena, and Steam Gardens act as Mario 64-style worlds where you can find moons by exploring and completing adventure-style objectives. Within each of these locations are doors that warp you to sub-areas that act as more focused mini levels. I imagine each Kingdom will only have 1 of these big open worlds.

I also expect the globe to be the hub, but from there, you select a kingdom and the camera zooms in and shows a more detailed map with the various locales you can visit. So NDC would be one location, and after collecting enough moons, you could move south, north, west, or south to another place in the Metro Kingdom.

And we saw in the treehouse footage that each locale contains mini 3D world style levels.

It'd be cool if there was some Atlantis Kingdom that rises out of the water.

Speculation says we're going to the moon? There will be a Moon Kingdom?

I have to wonder if the champagne bottle and the land mass beneath thr word Switch are actually part of the Luncheon Kingdom. They seem like perfect land masses for another level or two.

Mario Maker with an actual campaign. Levels that occasionally require you to build things on the fly and improvise. The ability to switch artstyles at will, in case you need the nsmb style for wall jumping or the smb3 style for the tanooki suit. Could be pretty great.

It's a pity Koizumi didnt use Sarasaland for the desert area and included Daisy there in some way, some of the stuff there like the lions and moais seem reminescent of SML.
Basically doing something like for Pauline with New Donk city that would have made fans giddy, becuase I love how this game is joining different areas in a world map. Would also love to visit the castle area with this graphics for an ending (even if its the secret levels ending mario type) in mushroom kingdom or something.

Koizumi loves his Rosalina, so if a moon appears as a playable area wouldnt be surprised she was there in some way. That, or he decided having her would be too much and he decided Pauline to have all the stardom for this game.

Yeah, that bothered me.
C'mon Nintendo Treehouse employee, you can't be caught slippin' on Mario facts in a livestream mostly aimed at enthusiast.
:p
Btw I really love the stingbys, they're one of my favorite modern Super Mario enemies. I'm loving how weird and creepy they are in Odyssey.

Let's not forget that while EAD Tokyo doesn't usually make short games, they do not make long games either. Both Super Mario Galaxys are big but not huge, and 3D Land, Captain Toad and 3D World are 5-10 hours games (specially if we don't count comets and recycled levels).

Wait, what the heck? It took me 40 hours or so to beat 3D World! 5-10 hours feels way too short for that game.

There is no way 3D World is a 40 hours game, unless you played it four times in order to complete every level with every single character (which is something I can't really count if we are talking about content). Its a game that an average player can perfectly end in 10 hours, and complete in way less than 20 even in a first run (green stars and stamps are not that hidden).

Both Galaxies are way bigger games and I find it hard to believe that they do exceed the 30 hours, comets included.

I'm also pretty bummed about some of the locations

Sarasaland, the Beanbean Kingdom, Mario Island, the Wario Kingdom, Diamond City, or Rogueport could have all been nuts but it's super unlikely that they'll show up because we're getting these vast almost open-world zeldaish areas

Game looks hype af, but a trip through tons of Mario places we haven't seen for years would have been cooler (to me)

I'm really glad they seem to ignore Mushroom Kingdom and more typical Mario levels for this game. I love how every world we've seen so far is removed from Mario's recent history. New Donk city is a brilliant nod to the first game. That's more than enough for me, haha.

It's 40+ hours if you do all the worlds, get all star coins, stamps and golden flags.

About 10 if you just rush through the main 'story' without collecting anything or doing the hard worlds.

EDIT

This site is usually has it spot on for completion times. Has it as nearly 40 hours for completionists.

"Both Galaxy games are way bigger games" than 3D World is an exaggeration. It's like maybe a bit shorter than both of them? But not that you really notice. They are all around 20 hours games if you complete everything and I would argue 3D World has way more unique and meaningful content overall.

Does everyone have a good understanding how the Power Moons work? I see you go into a Kingdom and it tells you the name of the objective. If you go and get the Power Moon you'll get the animation with the red background then it tells you the name of the next Power Moon objective.

So, it's just like Mario 64-Galaxy 2, except you stay in the Kingdom and can proceed to the next Moon. It's just much bigger levels with other smaller moons to collect also. It makes me wonder how many "main objective" Power Moons there are? You think of Mario 64 and each level had 6 Power Stars.

Man, seriously? It is clearly counting the FIVE runs of the main game you need to do in order to get all the stamps (since some of them are only adquired when you beat all the levels with all five characters). If you don't count that, which is a pretty lame and artificial system in order to stretch a game's length, it is a 10-15 hours game. I'm afraid it isn't even debatable.

In fact, you can rush through the main game and still collect most of the collectible stars and stamps. As I said before, they're not really that hidden.

I really don't think I like the way they're handling moons in this game. Handing out a moon every 5 minutes for nothing more than light exploration loses the impact. I fear it will be another korok situation.

Treehouse says there's a good mix, and quite a few of them. I get the impression the most involved moons are the ones on the critical path, but then there are a variety of moons on the side, ranging from easy to find to more devilishly hidden or difficult to attain. Completing the main story should be simple enough, but going for 100% completion sounds like it's going to keep us busy for awhile.

The game is presumably balanced around the number of moons and the rate at which you find them, and I think overall they're placing a stronger emphasis on exploration by continually rewarding the player for poking around.

I think the best solution would be the following:

Main missions - Moon (1 Moon)
Bosses - Grand Moon (3 Moons)
Everything else - Moon Piece (four of these = 1 Moon)

But honestly, I'm fine with how it is now. I trust EPD Tokyo.

That guy was kind of frustrating.

Treehouse Guy: "I've been wondering this for months but could you explain this scifi holographic dome around the forest?"

Motokura: "It's a greenhouse..."

Treehouse guy: "This came up yesterday, but are the local coins in this region upsidedown triangles because of the inverted pyramid?"

Motokura: "..."

My only concern about this game so far is that the hat seems so make things.. easier. I know they only showed early parts of the game, but I really hope we get some difficult stuff later in the game.

I would love so see Super Mario Sunshine secret levels to return, these were just so good!

How on earth has the soundtrack leaked?

Awesome though.
They played the songs during breaks on Treehouse Live. That's also how we have the full version of the vocal theme, with 3x the lyrics heard in the trailer.

You can also hear the New Donk City theme in GameXplain's direct-feed playthrough.

NDC is definitely preformed by a Big Band, I wonder if there will be some orchestra preformed songs too. Or a mixture of both for the soundtrack

Got that New Donk City theme on in the background and it's legitimately improving my mood. There's something inherently "good" about the Mario universe.

So... are there any traditional levels/missions? Similar to 64 or Galaxy? You collect moons but they're everywhere. So I'm confused, it just seems like the whole world hub is the level.

There are different platforming subsection levels within the hubworld that you can go to, they showed a few of the New Donk City ones off in the treehouse.

I learned to not worry about Mario anymore, I mean, 3d World felt like, in my eyes, as if the formula reached its absolute peak, yet Nintendo comes out of left field with Odyssey, which looks a bazillion times more exciting, fresh, fun. These guys seem to churn out new ideas like its the easiest thing in the world. I'm sure if there's one developer capable of reinventing the wheel, it's them

Brb watching the trailer for the 20th time

They played songs from the game in between Treehouse segments during E3. People just figured out where these songs played in the game proper based on the footage released & labeled the songs from there.

That sounds good enough to appease my need for some more 3D World / Sunshine Secret styled platforming.

Didn't Koizumi (or someone at Nintendo) say something about how the minimum amount of Moons to beat the game are a small fraction of total amount of Moons there are overall? Maybe you can hypothetically go through Odyssey as a mostly pure platformer.

When you enter a world, the game shows you what your main mission is, just like 64/sunshine/galaxy. The difference is, you can get a bunch of "side quest" moons in between main ones, and nothing kicks you out of the level. Also, when you do complete a main mission, the next main mission is unlocked and a cutscenes gives you an idea of where to go. It's basically exactly like sunshine/galaxy, except they just appear one after the other, and you never leave the world.

And moons you get from completing main missions give you a more celebratory "get" scene.
