Spider-Man: Homecoming review thread [92% RT]

More than a few critics mention that there's strong material here for a sequel.

Hopefully a Spider-Man sequel can be in the Winter Soldier class instead of most MCU sequels.

2017 keeps delivering with comic book movies it seems. At this rate it looks to be one of the best years ever for comic book movies! I'm so watching this!

W-why would it do that?

If anything, it would make Sony calm down about their other Spidey plans, I'd imagine. These studios are just going to chase whatever they see as the most profitable route.

The most profitable route for Sony is the route that they are taking at the moment. Have Marvel Studios make Homecoming 1 & 2 for them and then, once the contract is up, simply remove Spidey from the MCU and plug him straight into the 'knock off' Spidey verse they are putting together themselves with Venom etc.

At this point, with Venom already dated, the die is already cast.

2014 may finally be dethroned.
Already has been, really.

2014
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Guardians of the Galaxy

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also happened and sucked

2017
The LEGO Batman Movie
LOGAN
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Wonder Woman
Spider-Man: Homecoming

That "profitability" model relies on the spinoffs actually being competently made and successful though. Otherwise it's back to square one again for them.

Uhhh they have Venom slated for next year. The Homecoming sequel hits after that and you bet your ass they're going to sign a deal for a third movie. Tom Holland's Spider-Man is not going to be in those spinoffs.

The path Sony is taking now has them making Spider-Man spinoffs that don't feature Spider-Man. Venom, if it actually gets made, could find some small success but you bet your ass no one cares about freaking Silver Sable and Black Cat. So those movies either don't get made or they find miniscule commercial success compared to the MCU Spidey movies. At that point it becomes obvious that it's a bad strategy and they realize the best path forward is to keep making movies with Marvel.

Also, "the die is cast"? Who says shit like that?

Dammit Otto...

As someone who saw the movie, let me tell you that I just absolutely love the design of the Vulture. The look, how he puts on the suit, it's great shit.

It's already happening. Here's a quote from Amy Pascal when asked about Venom and Spider-Man appearing together.

”Venom is a character that is closely associated with Spidey and there may be some day where you see them together, you never know".

I'm telling you now, once Spider-Man's deal with Marvel Studios is done (after Homecoming 2) he's moving straight into Silver Sable country, they aren't even trying to hide the fact at this point.

Make your peace with it now.

'Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds'

True, but Sony are already in a situation where they had to bring in another studio to basically show them how to make Spider-Man films. There's only so much a corporate ego can take before something has to give.

How do you think Keaton reacted when they said: "We want you to play this guy"

The same thing we all said. "Oh perfect he just did Birdman"

Also Any Pascal probably doesn't know WTF she's talking about. Kevin Feige just had to go through that realization and we all saw his face!

And I wasn't trying to give you shit just wanted to reference one of my favorite running jokes from Superior Spider-Man. Otto trying to do hero banter was the best haha

Whoawhoawhoa…Ultron's design was great.

And I liked (helmet-less) A1 Cap.
Helmet-less Cap was good but I don't think any helmet design would've worked on that outfit. The clothing was just too fitting and streamlined for a helmet to not stand out.

I didn't like Ultron's face. Would've much preferred the gaping maw from the comics.
