Since all six series launched (more or less) at the "same" time, I wonder if any conclusions can be drawn about what helps a series to survive by comparing their popularity trends against how the series' stories developed.

I didn't realize there was a new manga from the author of Beelzebub, guess I'll check it out even if it looks like it won't last long.

Good to see Zumou still doing well doesn't like it's going anywhere. In fact since the new series were introduced it seems like it's average rank has increased a far bit.

probably no one will actually read this but I need to vent ~somewhere~

I recently read through Kekkaishi and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Before I got it, I'd read that there were some criticisms of the ending, that it seemed rushed. I didn't feel like it was rushed so much as I felt like it consumed
Yoshimori's story arc. I had the impression during the latter part of the series run, when he was becoming more serious about understanding his abilities, that we were going to see him figure whatever was going on with Karasumori. He even manages to achieve the Musou state and create a landlord. But then it turns out that his mother has already made her way to the center of Karasumori, met Tokimori, has spent a decade researching sites, and only needs Yoshimori for his connection to Chushinmaru. It feels like the progression we're set up to expect Yoshimori to have, to figure out what's going on and to work on fixing it, is taken from him and then simply presented pre-cooked. And Tokine's wasn't much better. I expected something significantly better for her as a result of the training she had and what we were being told. I found myself really unsatisfied by the way both Yoshimori's and Tokine's stories ended. But I did like a lot of the series, and it's not like the latter parts didn't have stuff that I liked.

That's more or less how I had grown to feel about the ending, in particular
the direction Tokine's character and plot line took in the final section of the series. I wasn't happy that she ended up getting sidelined out of the final solution and her relationship with Yoshimori's ending the way it did, in particular because the series had set both of them as equal narratively. I knew that she would end up getting shoved into the background the more the series focused on how powerful and unique Yoshimori was becoming, but even then I felt that the way she ended up being treated by the conclusion wasn't fitting for the deuteragonist of the series.

For Yoshimori, I wasn't happy either with how he ended up being treated in the end either, or rather, that the ending was less on him and more on his mother, Sumiko. Describing it as consuming is really fitting, because in the end, everything went down like Sumiko wanted and the emotional impact we were meant to be drawn to was how tragic it was to her husband rather than a son losing his mother or herself making a great sacrifice.

Which I think is where it boils down to: Sumiko's role in the series conclusion. It was one thing when she was the powerful character in the background going on dangerous and secret missions, but once she came into the foreground and invalidated a lot of the casts hard work and was the one with all the answers, it made it feel like everything was meaningless before she rolled into the story proper.

I still think Kekkaishi is a great series (I liked especially the stuff with Masamori, and Tokine
's God slaying arc
along with many great moments, even for certain parts of the final arc) but it makes me wish it ended on a more fitting note than the one it went with.

Part of the issue is there's no way to
resolve the Karasumori stuff without Yoshimori thinking of the idea and then a timeskip where he goes around looking for a suitable location and the series wasn't really set up for either of them to leave the area for an extended period of time so another character had to do the legwork on that one.

I still like the story overall, but the mangaka kinda wrote himself into a corner with the main plot line.

From what I recall, the mangaka is a woman.

As for solving the issue, it's not like it would have been impossible
for Yoshimori to come up with the conclusion himself, hell, it would have been a great way to showcase how he is continuing to grow and mature as a person if he continued to try and be smarter.

Or better yet, the solution could come from Tokine, since she's been the ''brain'' from early on in the series. Even without a timeskip, Sumiko could still be the one who finds a suitable location, or better yet, Masamori could contribute to that task. Heisuke was also running around alive, but he was an early villain so who know's if the mangaka remembered him then (though she seemed to recall everyone else in the conclusion).

I think it's less that the mangaka wrote herself into a corner, and more that it would have just been simpler to just have one character come up with the plan and the leg work, and then Yoshimori to just put the cherry on top. Might have been more straight forward, but not a satisfying conclusion to the central and secondary cast at all IMO.

Magical☆Flamethrower! Phoenix made a less adversarial first impression than I was expecting. Not getting Empress vibes from her after this display, which theoretically leaves 1 main candidate, but the way this is shaping up I'll be surprised if it's her. Also never hire a cute magical mercenary to do an elite's job.

I'm still expecting Eren and the rest of the group to invade, with Reiner keeping the role of "main character" as he has since the time skip.

Surprised for the reasoning behind Reiner being choosen, I expected them to have choose him due to his loyalty.

Seems like the army suspects there might be some traitors, and I expect Zeke was aware of that and made sure to conduct the conversation, I'm not quite convinced he's fully on Marley camp.

May I hug you, dani?

Incredible. I hope this exposes to more people the wonders of butt wrestling.

Just to be clear, I have nothing to do with the creation of this movement.

With that said, you may indeed hug me Zweizer!

Flaws:
Author can't draw horse running. That was absolutely hilarious

Shin Chimoguri Ringo to kingyoubachi otoko end

So, it finally end. This sure has come a long way. Most author probably going to get outright canceled when their magazine cease publication, but Abe Youchi somehow manage to get a chance to finish his work. It's not his strongest work, but this is as weird and fascinating as his other work.

Ending a bit rushed, especially with the sudden revelation that Ringo has unique blood that allow her to become goldfish man. Other than that, the ending, especially the last page, is quite a beautiful moment shown in a very weird way.

Give it a read if you want to read something quirky and unique art

Sorry, I was out of town for the July 4th weekend so I was busy with stuff.

Thank you very much for the kind words everyone. It's nice to know that at least here, in this thread that was the one place on GAF I felt some form of camaraderie or warmth, people gave some kind of fuck. I dunno if I'll be back but who knows. When I'm in a better place maybe I can find something worth coming back for. I'll still be writing posts on...that site...simply because as shitty as it is it also has almost no investment for me so I don't care what anyone there says, unlike here.

I'll respond to PMs when I'm out of work, unfortunately I'm just kinda writing this in between appointments.

Thanks very much everyone.

No worries. Take your time and relax yourself. We might not be able to all meet face-to-face, but you're an important companion regardless, and it's more important that you take care of yourself than trying to keep up with a site that hurts you.

At this point, I'm stuck in a weird place between wanting Jun to drop his bullshit already, or just let him continue to trip over himself and calling him an idiot because I'm deriving some sort of amusement out of it now.

Twintelle doesn't fight with her booty though.
No reason to think she couldn't adapt.

I mean, at least we know why he hasn't jumped Tomo yet: he can't see her as a woman until he surpasses her strength. Paradoxically he can't do that until he sees her as a woman and jumps her. I'm kinda interested to see how this plays out.

Yes, Seven Deadly Sins is what happens when you cut out the bullshit out of a typical Shounen series.

Sounds good.
The power level creep 100 chapters deep is less exciting, but I'll deal with that later on.

Will start after I finally finish Persona 5. That game draaaags. Such a good start and then completely loses steam halfway through. And the writing is pretty hammy in a bad way, seriously lacking depth.
But I might be judging it too harshly coming off Yakuza 0 and NieR: Automata.

Play fighting games with me and become a magical girl. It's cute girls doing cute competitive gaming, and while both the lead characters and art taste like vanilla ice cream, it's tagged as yuri so followed to watch the flowers bloom etc. I need a stock post for these kinds of otherwise unengaging series.

Dont let the power level creep scare you too much. A lot of stuff happens in that forat 100 chapters and the power level stuff is more there than anything else. Which is still a problem, but theres not like an abundance of training arcs or anything.

Been having the same problem with P5. Its fun in that JRPG social sim way, but the story is such a let down compared to P4. Also Nier is the Citizen Kaine of video games.

Vigilante - My Hero Academia Illegals Ch9: Stain where?

Well, I never did say the plot make sense :p

Which is such a shame too. As the first twenty chapters were really cool. Then it suddenly went downhill. Until
spoiler:
we now have a crazy psychopath of a musician's daughter wanting to give birth to a perfected clone of her dad. So he can then lead Japan in a cultural revolution.

Am I missing something here?

In chapter 426, Tomo outright questions how much longer is Jun going to make her wait in getting his Game Boy back; she straight up admits that he's already way stronger than her now.

So why hasn't Jun attempted to get his Game Boy back since then and end this fucking dumb "boyhood pact"?

I can't tell if this is bad writing on the author's part or if this is a shitty attempt at prolonging this manga...

This isn't even enjoyable anymore because no matter how many more schemes Misuzu and Carol come up with in trying to make Jun notice Tomo as a girl, he'll always reject her because of this stupid Game Boy dilemma.

Thanks. I actually like power levels and training arcs if done right, in a subtle world building way, but am wary of the usual shounen troupe of throwing out a bunch of numbers and everyone powering up in ridiculous and totally illogical ways.
I'll just take the jump and see where the ride takes me.

Been having the same problem with P5. Its fun in that JRPG social sim way, but the story is such a let down compared to P4. Also Nier is the Citizen Kaine of video games.

The biggest letdown for me are the characters. I genuinely don't care for any of them. The only, surprising, exception being Yusuke, who feels the most relate- and likeable despite being the most excentric. Everyone else is just really one-note and bland. I mean, Makoto had such a badass introduction and her character shift from proper student council president to rebellious bike punk was fun and well executed, but it goes nowhere really fast and her violenty outbursting persona never really shows up anymore.

And I never yelled at my screen for a character to just shut up quite as much as with Ryuji. His social link interactions are okay, but his main story personality is beyond annoying.

But I'm OTing hard here. Just to finish it off, while Persona is still a fun game, it suffers from the fact that the best parts are nearly all in the first half, while NieR Automata grows from a decent-to-good game to a full-mind-blown life changing experience by the end of things and beyond. It's been ten weeks since I finished that game and I'm still thinking about it.

he'll always reject her because of this stupid Game Boy dilemma.

This sentence on its own is actually totally valid.
But yeah, in the context of Tomo-Jun it's duuuumb.

Hunter X Hunter volume 34 brings in almost 1mil sales in its first week (876 566), proving its still a monster in the manga world. That's even more than 33 sold in its first week last year. Almost One Piece level and I'm not sure if even stuff like AoT/Haikyuu can pull that kind of number.

Haikyuu tends to be 450K-550K first week for new volumes, AoT the last two volumes opened up around 650K. So yeah HxH might be the generally the closest to selling current One Piece levels.

Kekkaishi spoilers:

Which I think is where it boils down to: Sumiko's role in the series conclusion. Sumiko is also where I identify the problem. She took accomplishments and plot arcs that ought to have been divided up between Yoshimori and Tokine. And really, having Tokine pass out and lose her legs (only to get it deus ex machina'd, of course) was a pretty lame way of ending her story. We were told by Mikeno that what Tokine was learning was arguably the strongest technique a kekkaishi could learn—but she gets largely sidelined at the end, even moreso than Yoshi.

And yeah, I do still really like it. It's why I'm frustrated by the latter parts. I really like the kekkai power system and the way she built on a really simple concept; I like the characters and their relationships, and that little bit of off-beat Shonen Sunday charm that the series has, especially in the beginning. I even enjoyed parts of the later stuff. I just didn't like the way the plot recentered itself around Johnny-come-lately figures.

From what I recall, the mangaka is a woman.

She is!

Is been explain many time that while Jun is stronger in raw physical power. In fair fight he is still loss to Tomo (she is better in karate technique).

Honestly is probably just his lack of confident. He still have that gameboi mentality

I think it's more that fact that Jun has built up Tomo in his mind at some indomitable and unbeatable force of nature that he could never match much less overcome. Tomo even out right accuses him of overestimating her once.

Jun needs to reconcile the image of "Tomo" he's has in her head since childhood with the "Tomo" he's growing to have feeling for in manhood.

Kekkaishi had one of the biggest WTF endings. It really did feel like it had the axe hanging over the mangaka's head and was cut short. You saw Yoshi's progression and then
all of sudden his mother appears and is like "I'm a total cold hearted bitch and it's OK for me to seal myself away for eternity."
I do wish they would have integrated more of yoshi into the shadow org ordeal. He was kind of tossed aside there.

So AKB49 combined with the Holophoner from Futurama but lewd. Yep, this is something Wakaki would come up with. Not just a little lewd but it takes 3 hearts to cover up no matter the panel. If there's ever been a time where anime characters overreact to body parts was justified, this is probably it.
