Reporters Jo Becker, Matt Apuzzo, and Adam Goldman said the story was based on accounts from “three advisers to the White House briefed on the meeting and two others with knowledge of it.” Here’s why that sourcing is intriguing.

First, the fact that these are White House advisers makes this story’s sourcing appear to differ from many other Trump/Russia investigation-related stories, which often seem to have been leaked from Congress or from law enforcement or intelligence agencies.

Second, these sources were apparently okay with being identified as White House advisers rather than demanding a more vague attribution to better hide their identities, such as “US officials.” That seems to suggest a strategic leak.

Third, there’s the number — this isn’t just one White House adviser, it’s coming from three. Again, that suggests a coordinated leak. It’s rare that three separate White House advisers would separately go rogue to leak about something, especially something that appears to be damaging information about the president’s son.

Because these sources are publicly anonymous, any account of their motivations will necessarily be speculative. Still, this story has all the hallmarks of a deliberate, strategic, White House-approved disclosure, so it’s worth asking just why the White House may have wanted to get this information out there.

Yeah sorry, I agree that it matters, I more suggesting that if Russia has strong leverage over Trump, then I imagine they will continually demand favours from him even if he delivers what was initially promised.

It's not working. No one buys that this meeting was about Russia funding the Clinton campaign. And no one is going to buy that Kushner amending his statements months after the fact makes him look clean coming out the other side.

If this is the Trump team being "forward" with scandal to temper the outrage, it sets a pretty low bar.

Assuming this is all true and not fake like suggested, doesn't really mean it's White House approved. That's a strange conclusion to reach when none of this is helpful to Trump or his family. This seems like a few in the White House are likely reaching their limit and want Trump to know those around him are reaching their limit with him and his family.

I don't doubt Trump and crew are pissing people off in that White House. Those that actually want to do a job and every other day, hell every day, he's saying or doing something to fuck that up. This entire G20 trip was horrible in the end. We're well passed the "he's new" stage for even some of defenders I think.

Knowing what we know about Trump, he probably authorized the leaks from the White House staffers just to throw his own son under the bus.

If he's doing that to his own son (and possibly getting his prosecuted for federal crimes), then there must a lot of truth to the more serious allegations.

When/if the 'pee tape' is verified, don't be surprised if Trump first acts like 'it's not true,' then 'oh yeah, something like that happened, but I had no choice.' Not to mention that Trump owes Russian oligarchs billions (with a B) for his income.

I don't think what has been revealed so far is fake, especially since DJT is basically confirming everything.

I think it's likely due to the existence of this meeting becoming known just a day prior to when the article in the OP was written, so damage control needed to be done. It hasn't really panned out that way, though.

It'd be really interesting to see just how low dignity the Trump family really has when this gets bigger and bigger. Will they all just start eating each other alive and placing all blame on each other?

I find myself in a position where I have to take a cautious approach to anything I see these days. I don't want to hype myself up over any one particular thing.

I'm completely not nothingburger-ing it, but I know this is a slow play, and don't want to run out of popcorn before intermission.

Trump's camp has been colluding with Russia through their oligarchs and mobsters on shady real estate and money laundering for decades.

Hard for me to imagine they didn't collude on trying to swing the election.

There are 'payments' in plain sight if you look at the changes made to the RNC platform by Trump's camp.

Yah man, I hear that. I get hyped up with all the Trump news as well. I think they are all too fucking stupid to be playing any kind of long term game though.

My definition of collusion is the same as the textbook definition. My point being that these idiots were being used by the Russians. They have absolutely no idea what they were getting into.

Also, collusion with regards to Donald himself.


Edit: Also good luck getting a proper investigation into the matter.

I doubt this. The NYT specifically has already outed the Trump Admin for trying to release fake leaks. I doubt they would run with this story if they had any doubts about its legitimacy. Especially considering the CNN debacle. Im sure there are still plenty within the WH that still despise Trump.

If anything this was a brilliant trap that worked by the NYT. Getting Trump Jr to put out an inaccurate statement and then pulling the carpet. The fact that he even gave a statement to CNN of all places suggests that this is very real and they are very scared.
