Media Create Sales: Week 27, 2017 (Jul 03 - Jul 09)

YSO predictions are generally just for just physical sales? Splatoon had 10% digital sales during it's launch on the Wii U.

Yeah I don't get that at all
Japanese publishers keep doing this in general.

Like a bizarre number of Japanese niche games launch in October and November in the West too.

Sometimes I think a lot of Japanese publishers have zero business planning and just release games based entirely on their own line-up instead of anything else.

A huge first week for Splatoon 2 will also mean a huge second week drop due to the install base, possibly +90% like the one Gundam Versus is getting this week.

Are they really going for the same market though? I'm pretty sure the demo has been the hardcore j-game fans for a lot of publishers.

True, not expecting a drop lower than 75%, depending on how large the shipment for the week after Splatoon 2 week is, i.e. if they can ship another 100k or so (slim chance imo) then they will have rest orde the userbase sufficiently, but otherWise 90% is quite possible.

They end up competing with each other plus all the biggest games in the industry, so it's a double whammy on that front.

Looking at last October:
-Two Neptunia games
-Valkyrie Drive
-Dragon Quest Builders
-Exist Archive
-World of Final Fantasy
-Berserk
-XenoVerse 2
-YomaWari
-Crows
-Corpse Party
-Macross
-DoDanPachi
-Criminal Girls 2
-The Silver Case

Like really?

Resident Evil 7 and Splatoon 2 could've released the same day, audiences of the games barely overlap, but stores have only so much space to put up promotions for the games, as well as the games themselves.

Next week stores are going to make up space to upwards to 1 million copies of Splatoon 2, and just a week after that space for at least 2 million copies of Dragon Quest XI.

To something like Sumikko Gurashi that sells little over a long time its not an issue, but Fate is selling 90% of its units during week 1.

Nah, it totally makes sense for Bandai Namco to release DB Xenoverse 2 on the same day as Pokken Deluxe.

Xenoverse 2 coming out the same day as Pokken DX and they want us to buy it to get FigtherZ? Fuck outta here.

I feel like that's just a front. They're probably planning on bringing FighterZ over anyways but they don't wanna say that yet because then less people would be likely to buy Xenoverse 2.

A good chunk of these games are only aimed at a specific fanbase that wouldn't have missed it no matter what. Like, Criminal Girls 2, DoDanPachi, Corpse Party, Yomawari, these are the kind of niche games targeting people who bought previous entries. I doubt that a too crowded month would have changed anything.

On the other side, I didn't even know that Crows released, I though it was MIA.

It was completely sold out retail though

Do you see the place of Splatoon 2 Digital on Amazon - people pre-ordering something they could easily just purchase online on release day. 7 Eleven is also selling download codes.
Splatoon 2's will no doubt be one of the titles on the Switch that will have the highest digital percentage and 10% at launch is perfectly within the realms of possibility as people who want to buy it might not want to go through the hassle of going to the store and jumping into the online ASAP.

I mean people are buying empty boxes and empty cases for Splatoon 2... yet people were so certain it had no chance of 80% attach rate for 2017 or selling more than 5 million during it's lifetime in Japan both don't seem completely insane possibilities right about now.

I don't quite get this list, it seems to be a mix of localizations and Japanese releases. Like I get why there'd be an overlap in like domestic markets of these games; or overseas niche buying audience, but how many people out there are going to import say, Berserk, when it was already announced for western release later on?

As mentioned sometimes before, performance of Splatoon 2 and Switch will probably follow the same steps as Melee and the GameCube did back in 2001.

I don't know what the timetable for Splatoon 2 would've been if Splatoon 1 was only moderately successful or worse, but the choice to get the sequel out in 2 years no matter what looks a genius move.

The Capcom/Level 5 business model needs to die.

Was predicting something close to 600K for Splatoon 2 but mah god at YSO. Nintendo royally screwed the pooch on hardware availability. Just how many Switch's does Nintendo have prepared for next week?

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Only bummer is that we will never find out how much Switch/Splatoon 2 would have been able to sell if it werent for those hardware shortages. No matter how good it performs you know it could have been better...obv. its not a big deal for a evergreen game like Splatoon, but still.

Wow! Not sure if some of those predictions about Splatoon 2 are realistic... I believe 500K for the first days/week is already an amazing accomplishment on a system with 1million user base.

Do we have numbers on shipments or preorders to say it can sell 700-900K units? :O

Well not really to be taken literally but Splatoon 2 has over 850 preorders at COMG.

this is a fucking tragedy for nintendo.

they could sell, what, 300k switches in a week?

instead they'd sell like 60k.

what a major fuck up of epic proportions.

Hmm...

According to sinobi price of first Splatoon went up even 95% at some wholesalers.

I think Nintendo just figured out how to sell the Wii U.

The exciting thing about Splatoon 2 is that we have no idea what its ceiling is. 3 million? 4? 5? The joy of having something with little precedent.

Its closer to the combined than either individual version

So, or DQXI will be a massive bomb or Splatoon 2 will sell to people that don't have a Switch yet...

Or Nintendo won't ship enough copies to fulfil all those preorders on the first week...

Can see all 3 of those being true to some extent at least

DQXI could easily underperform, especially if you expect it to sell five million copies like the former Famitsu guy haha.
