McCain is that guy that's been fucking up and betraying your party all throughout the story and he finally comes through at the end.

He's like that bad guy who's been in the game since the beginning and realizes he's been fucking up so now he's going to turn face before his time ends.

You know, it's a subtle thing, but my favorite part of this is how he called the Union the heirs of the American Revolution. That is a direct shot at the neo-confederates.

Yep its a very deliberate shot across the bow of the whole Confederacy is the heirs of the revolution bullshit

I appreciate the strong words some GOP politicians have said on the events of today but I'm going to need to see them stand up against the White nationalists already in the White House or those Trump might nominate to various positions. They aren't doing enough in that regard so their words still ring hollow >_<

Well, I guess I'm going to write John McCain another nice letter.

Something I never thought I would ever fucking do again but the man deserves props.

I just realised how similar Trump's speech is to the one he held after that shooting at the republican baseball match. Some of it is almost word for word

http://edition.cnn.com/2017/06/14/politics/trump-baseball-shooting-statement/index.html
Condolences to the family of the young woman killed today, and best regards to all of those injured, in Charlottesville, Virginia. So sad!

"Best regards"? What the fuck.

Exactly.

I praise McCain for his vote, not his words. Because today he's assumed the role he's ALWAYS held in the GOP: smokescreen.

McCain's words do nothing to change the fact that the GOP by-and-large condones the shit that's happening. They'll be used to gloss over the GOP's collective inaction, and nothing else.

So fuck McCain's words.

Wow, I'm really struck by "Nothing less is at stake..." Pretty powerful, and what we need to see coming from the "traditional" right wing right now

How many Republicans have come out with something strong to say? I saw Huckabee, Hatch, McCain, have there been others?

I know nobody knows what's going to happen next, but I really hope people in power come together and denounce and rebel against this movement.

This needs to be smashed in the nucleus.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Stood out for me as well reading it. Loved it.

Fantastic statement. This, Trump, is a real man.

Guys remember when Hillary gave that speech about how Trump was a racist POS running an explicitly racist campaign and warned us about the so-called alt-right

Exactly. She seemingly got more people to vote against her when she called out the deplorables on the republican side.

I was watching Last Chance U, which was filmed during the time of the election last year. Its weird seeing all these african americans know how bad Trump is as a candidate and that they knew it was going to be a worse place for them, yet they end each conversation with "but Hillary is just as bad"- yet never give a reason why she was "just as bad" or why "both sides are the same".

The republican's have done a number on the majority of people in the USA to think that both sides were even remotely the same.

Really?
I mean, I get the general sentiment, but that phrasing, specifically, in this thread?

The whole point is to use that phrasing, because good, innocent people were run over, one was killed, because they had the audacity to think Nazi's are evil and racism is wrong.

Yet Richard Spencer makes himself wealthy quite literally now on the bodies of the dead.

He's a repugnant blight on humanity and the world would be a better place without him in it.

I don't think it's just republicans, but also the issue of wanting normalcy and wanting to act like there either aren't issues or they're not that bad.

I...just am not giving Republicans much credit or any at all for their statements condemning what took place in Charlottesville. Like, that THIS, being offended by violent traitorous racists, literally some of them walking around with Nazi paraphernalia, is the baseline that they need to cross to receive kudos?

At the end of the day, these Republicans will still support and vote with this White House that is populated with white nationalists. Their empty words mean nothing and right now they are a neutered group of husks of humans that will go party over country no matter how brazenly evil their side might be. That they can "score points" disagreeing with our feckless nightmare of a President today and tomorrow and forever vote and support his agenda is the thing that has to be remembered.

This whole thing is just a nightmare.

I find you somewhat lucky with how incompetent Trump is, the next fascist who rises up won't be as stupid as him, you need to make sure it doesn't happen at any cost otherwise, the damage the next fucker causes will be so much worse

Trump can't condemn the white supremacists because he'd be alienating a large portion of his base

How?

People keep saying this but if you actually follow the news and his approval ratings, his own base has hated him for months now and it continues to plummet. Who exactly is he pandering to?

When Hillary gave the basket of deplorables speech people largely attacked her for being stupid and "insulting americans" and moaned about how bad it would be for her chances, etc. And she did lose

So what are we supposed to do about these people

The remaining 38% or so of his base that's been shown to remain fairly solid.

Something happened when McCain have that surgery. Making too much sense right now.

Did he just call counter protestors better angels?

If anyone is curious, Fox News as of 5 minutes ago were having people on saying that this was domestic terrorism by a white supremacist. They showed the Governor's video, they mentioned the KKK video where Trump was mentioned, and they mentioned many times about how Trump won't specify where the violence came from and won't mention white supremacists or neo-Nazi's

For the brief amount of time that I had it on to see what they were saying, I wasn't disappointed.
Hannity is off on the weekends.

By the time Monday comes around Fox and Friends will have a story to push.

Rubio challenged the president a bit

just read Marco Rubio's tweet (terror attack by #whitesupremacists) and John McCain's statement

Good on you for calling it out what it is.

now, Trump, we wait for your statement

The people who haven't yet abandoned him. White supremacists are among his strongest and most enthusiastic supporters.

I believe Sarah Huckabee also have a very similar statement?

Edit.. Maybe not? Can't find it. But lots of republicans seemed to have come out and called them white supremacists and nationalists

Trump's already made his statement. It's "both sides" and refusing to specifically denounce white nationalism.

Trump getting royally thrown under the bus tonight.

Oh, now they wanna get bold in denouncing the bigoted ideals of nazi's (that many in their own party have held for many decades). It's only took a irredeemable President who courted these types, the death of one protester and the critical injuries of many more.

Seems like the most of the GOP members actually taking a stand are minorities themselves or, like McCain and Hatch, old enough to remember the war.

How about all the Republicans "taking a stand" on this attach another statement calling for motion to begin impeachment proceedings

Until then, sure Jan

how is it radical if this is the modern right wing m.o. though

the kkk are just more open about wanting to kill all of the black people

Trump can't go a day without crashing us into the mountain. This should be the easiest situation for a president to handle. Just say that it's wrong for people to drive over each other with cars and try not to babble like a fucking child and tacitly endorse the Nazis. How hard is that.
