Sonic Mania review thread

Man it's like the whole "Crash was never good" shit posts all over again.

Sonic was never good is the true apex of revisionist history spouted by many.

I'm glad its back, but I just wish it had all original zones. Anyway yep, I've gone from won't buy to will buy as soon as I get my Switch back!

You sure you quoted the right post? That is not a shitpost at all - in fact, that is the sentiment that has given rise to this game in the first place, that Sonic lost his way post-16 bit era.

EDIT: Haha, I thought so

Great scores. But how long to beat?

I think it took me about 3 hours, then about an hour to get all the chaos emeralds (I sucked at the special stages for a while).

But then you have the other characters which do make the game feel quite different, time attacks, and other extra modes.

e: I guess I'd say its comparable in length to S3&K. It does feel very chunky.

I figured it'd get mid 80s, there was no way it'd ever beat Adventure.

My gosh, I hate people with attitudes like you. Your opinion holds no weight based on your predetermined bias. Let's let the game release before making any judgements shall we?

There is no "predetermined bias". I bought Lost Worlds day one, liked the first couple of worlds and loved the direction the game attempted to go.

Forces looks like garbage.
And I'm probably still there day one.
Anyway, I'm in for a Switch copy of Mania.

So, what is so outrageous about what I said? What makes is a shitpost?

Yeah this confused me... I've always enjoyed Sonic more than I disliked it but it seems plain as day why folks might not have enjoyed the series since the classic games. Regardless of quality, the games turned into something different.

Finally a great Sonic game! There has not been one since the Genesis/MegaDrive days.

Pfft, Sonic Colours was pretty great.
Generations was good too, outside of that I agree though. Everything from Sonic Adventure to Sonic Boom outside of Colours and Generations has ranged from unplayable trash to mediocre.

Will be my 18th switch game

Going for this one for portability of course. Great for vacation

Is it just me, or is polygon pretty much always "that guy" when it comes to scoring?
There may be some confirmation bias going on here, but it feels like they consistently grade things either much higher or lower than the rest of the reviewers.

I think that's a good point. Even if the Sonic games post-1994 were all of adequate quality - which they most definitely were not - then the gameplay, tone and intended-audience have all still radically shifted. They are something very, very different to what the golden age of Sonic was all about.

Sonic Forces is really hard to call because of how little they've shown of it. It screams Modern Sonic and as a sequal to Generations (despite SEGA's insisting it isn't) I think you can tell how 2/3rds of the game will play. The created character gameplay looked really bad though.

Sonic Team seem paranoid about padding the length of their games out. Glancing over the Mania reviews it's refreshing that it's short but sweet and the padding is in its Bonus and Special stages which are ostensibly optional instead of Shooting/Treasure hunting/Warehog mandatory offshoots from the main Sonic running and platforming.

2 days for 100%

3 to 4 hours from what I've heard, there's also multiple character with slightly different changes to the levels.

I beat it in 4 hours including playing as different characters. Wish there was a platinum trophy, oh well.

Okay. Four hours is about what I'd expect. I just didn't want to drop $20 for like two hours of content, lol.

D-do you know how resolution works for 2D sprite based games?

Yes. And he's right. Native support for 4k means at least scaling was meant for it. 2D sprite scale better with nearest neighbour. Althought what if the game is native 1080p and then when played on a 4k display, upscaled with a different technique ? That kills the pixel accuracy and the sharpness.

mfw the Sonic Advance trilogy keeps getting neglected

:(

All three Sonic Advance games are varying degrees of good, but none of them can hold a candle to the originals.

Advance 1 was probably the closest, and it made some... questionable decisions on level design and enemy placement.

Man, Sonic Generations just IS good. Also I've heard good things about Sonic Colors.

I also really like the original Sonic Adventure, so don't you be hating on legit good games.

I'm allowed my opinion, believe it or not. I personally haven't enjoyed a Sonic game since Sonic and Knuckles, with the now-defunct and unavailable Sonic Level Creator as a lone exception. I played a lot of them, I didn't enjoy them, what more do you want?

I mean, I'm glad people did like them. I'm glad people enjoyed Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors for example - they weren't for me (too much boosting rubbish and gameplay I just do not enjoy). I didn't like them. I didn't like Sonic Adventure. I didn't like Sonic Rush. But I do like this. I want to buy this, and am going to, tommorow.

So, what is so outrageous about that? What makes is a shitpost?
My mistake, lol. I quoted the wrong post. :D

I have played one Sonic level in my life and didn't even get to the end. I may pick this up - I'm curious how I'll feel about it since nostalgia won't be a factor.

Regarding game length - I can beat Sonic 3 and Knuckles in barely a few hours, and could do so when it first game out. And its still regarded as a legendary game even to this day.
There's a lot to be said about not padding the game, and making sure that the content within is simply so stupendous that it warrants regular, repeated playthroughts.

I hope that is what they are going for here. It may take four hours to complete, but I know through replays that it will last me a lot longer than that.

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
At the end of the day, Sonic Mania isn't really something you need reviews for. If you liked the classic games, and if you liked Taxman/Stealth's remakes of Sonic 1, 2, and CD, then you should like this one just fine. It's quite telling that the somewhat less positive reviews are the ones who don't seem to be big fans of the Genesis games.

Great scores nonetheless.

Indeed.

It's a simple formula:

IF: You loved the Mega Drive Sonic games, then buy Sonic Mania. I loved the Mega Drive entries so yeah, this is on my buy list.

Yes it's 1620p checkerboarded up to 2160p
This however is just strange. How the hell is this not fully 4K native. I mean, look at it! Ah well, it's not like it really needs 4K but still, weird.

Lol I've been through enough Sonic game hype cycles and launches in my life to have had this song and dance memorized. When a game looks like a stinker there's a pretty good chance it is, in fact, a stinker.

Hopefully this is a wake up call to Sonic Team.

It's true that 1080p is kind of a bad number if the game is rendered at 240p, so your sprite scaling is a little better at 4k. Read: A little. Unless you're pausing and examining the pixels, you won't notice. Even if your TV is bad at upscaling from 1080p, the PS4P always outputs at 4k (if it's set that way), so you won't get artifacts and/or lag due to TV scaling either way.

Outstandung review scores! That Gamespot review baited me with that "Greatest Sonic Game OF ALL TIME!" into their spoiler filled review. Don't do it if you can hold out. There's definitely a few things I wish I could forget.

The dude with a 'tude is back, baby!

Sonic Advance, Rush, Colors and Generations have been pretty universally acclaimed.

Ymmv on the Adventure games. Still saying Sonic was only great on the Genesis is a pretty ignorant statement.

So when Sonic Forces absolutely tanks in reviews (at least relatively, if you want to be optimistic...), what are the odds Sega/Sonic team take it really badly that some small team made a better game than they could?

Probably it will sell good enough tho, maybe better than Mania. Sega will put all their marketing muscle in their own big Sonic title. Thats for sure
