Mario Community Thread: Anything and everything Super Mario

We have been running a new page here https://www.facebook.com/NintendoSwitchN/?fref=ts (Really want to get a site going!)

I hope no one minds if I post any of their things or posts from here in the future. I save a lot, share and get things from others and have quite the crazy collection of saved images for nintendo games, games in general.

Wanted to share a few of our things that we have posted in the past and things I have saved, found or liked. I have a ton more but those aren't linked yet and most may never be unless I have some sort of good way to categorize it. (never used tumblr etc)

Wondering how single-cart multiplayer will be for Sports Superstars. Tennis has some decent features but Golf doesn't have any, I don't think?

We had a delay due to clearance from Nintendo, but regardless, my interview with Tomoya Tomita, the composer for Wario Land: Shake It!, is now finally up!!

I personally think his comments for Kirby's Epic Yarn are the most fascinating, but all of his answers were amazingly insightful. :)

I thought this was worth sharing. He goes through all the different 3D Mario models since SM64 in detail.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2gXyEyy_2U&index=2&list=WL

That OG Smash Bros model is....something lol

I love how they swap out the "detailed" model for a super low poly one when the camera is far away. I presume lots of games do this.

Also, it's pretty amazing that the highest quality Mario models wasn't even made by Nintendo, but Sega!

Great video here!

I'd love to see a full 2D platformer with this style of handrawn artwork. It's just like the stuff they used to have in the instruction books on the NES/SNES/Virtual Boy before they started rendering Mario in 3D.

Hey Max, I'll have a good think about my favourite Mario levels and do a nice write up for the thread.

Hi Dom! Looking forward to that, thank you. :)

I've been wishing for this for a while, too. I suppose the closest we really got so far is the Paper Mario games but only SPM is a platformer and a very text-heavy one at that. (Not that I mind.)

Kotabe's Mario art is my fave, for sure. I'm not sure if he did the art for these stamps but it looks similar to me. His art or something in the style of it adorns my Wii U GamePad cover (from GameStop). And then I love the inclusion of his art in 3DL and 3DW.

Where can I buy these from in the USA?

So I got Super Mario World SNES on my 3DS and decided to play through it.
I THINK I played the GBA ver. years ago but can't remember.

Of course I've read and know about Mario World's secret exits among other things, but in my playthrough I wanted to play through it normally; like how I would've played it were I to own an SNES as a kid in the 90s and without knowing that there were secrets in this game.

So far, I will say that I like the music and while the visuals are clean they just feel too....tame, like there's nothing remarkable or outstanding about them. Gameplay wise I am sadly not feeling it. Mario feels kind of 'slippery' to control for me and the overall platforming is fine but I didn't find anything remarkable (to me) about them too.
I do recall enjoying Mario Bros. 3 and 3D Land but World just isn't clicking with me I am sad to say.

Just to clarify I understand the platforming challenges involved within the game, and would still recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good 2D platforming romp; the game lives up to its praise, but to me it just hasn't won me over.

I am about to finish World 3 and am playing it so I beat 1 World a day so I expect to finish it by end of the week if not next week (I am visiting family abroad in a few days).

I haven't played through Super Mario World since the original years it came out. I tried playing the GBA version in the year 2000 but wasn't particularly interested since I completely burned out on the game (overplayed) in the early 90's.

Playing it back in 1990/1991, there was nothing like it. Even though it was similar to Super Mario Bros 3 - this totally blew our minds back then. The sheer amount of levels and secrets and the controls at the time were so tight.

Also, there was no internet for us back then so we never knew just how big the game was. We never knew there were 96 levels until much later after getting the game. There was three of us together who had the game and the running back and forth between each other trying to find out how many levels and secrets we had found and where.

Good times, man!

Yo fuck Wendy's Castle.

OK I am in Valley of Bowser, I think I'll play up til the boss there and then beat the game tomorrow. Unless I somehow find the scret exit and choose to take the back entrance to Bowser's Castle :V

It says there's 96 levels on the front and back of the SNES box.

Nobody reads that ish! We just looked at the pictures and got more excited to reach those locations!

Yeah, coming from NES and even Mario 3...the first time my friend loaded up his brand new SNES (so jealous of him at that time) and popped in Mario World, I was floored. I think that's why Mario Word is my favorite Mario to date...it brings back those feels I had back in 91 or whenever it came out.

I'd absolutely kill for another 2d hand-drawn Mario for Switch.

Imagine what it was like coming from a green-ass monochrome Game Boy and Super Mario Land to Super Mario World (having never seen SMB other than on TV ads/magazine pics).

Yo fuck Larry's Castle
Fuck these MagiKoopas
Fuck this Valley of Bowser

Alright Bowser I'm coming for your ass, don't think I don't see your shadowy figure flying in your sunday morning cartoon baby cereal bowl contraption around your underground castle, acting like you own this island.
...
Hold up
is that lightning and thunder in an UNDERGROUND VALLEY or is that just fireworks?

EDIT: ...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand beaten. Final boss was lame. I'd say what I liked most about the game is the music but other than that...I didn't find it that impressive.
Still don't get why Mario feels so slippery to control o_O

It's a great book, I have the Japanese edition and it's packed with gloriously printed art, as you'd expect. Here's my copy:

Aaaaah thanks for this, I've been wondering if a Mario series artbook existed. I really wanna see the Mario World artwork among others.

I've got both Mario Land 1 and 2 installed on my n3DS. I'll prob. start them soon. They are short games after all.

Mario Land 1 is a classic and you can complete the entire game in under 45 minutes. It's more of an "arcade" style Super Mario Bros game in that it's quick and direct (even though Vs Super Mario Bros arcade machines exist). No secret levels to get lost exploring. Plus the shoot-em up levels are an interesting touch. Great music too.

Now for me, Mario Land 2 is a disappointment. The graphics are indeed a huge step up from Mario Land 1. But the disappointment is that this was advertised as coming on a 4 Meg cart which is the same size as Super Mario World. I thought that this would make a HUGE game for a Gameboy game. Forget the 96 stages of SMW, 4 Meg on a B&W Gameboy is gonna possibly double that...right???

Nope. Game was short, small and easy and had none of the huge scope that SMW did (which came on the same sized cart). No Yoshi, no super duper power ups. No ambition or imagination compared to SMW.

Hmmmm.

Half way through Mario Land 2, and so far it is a mixed bag. I don't like th euneveness of how some zones only have like 2 or 3 stages in them only.
Visually it's great and the music is nice, gameplay is indeed on the easy side, but I kinda prefer Mario Land 1 more :p

Me too. The sprites in Land 2 take up too much room and the action is too slow.

Nice post from this thread: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1417498

I don't wanna brag... but I know a lot about Mario. However, I can concede the fact that whoever runs Supper Mario Broth knows a great deal more.

SMB is a twitter account and blog focusing on Mario Obscura. The most minute, unknown, and ridiculous bits of Mario trivia are catalogued. This goes far beyond knowing the punching ghost from NSMB's name (Broozer) and SMB manages to dig up unused textures, forgotten art, and general absurd information that no one, ever, would think about.

DFMArgsXYAE5Srn.jpg

WHO WOULD EVEN KNOW THIS? OR WANT TO KNOW IT?

SMB also manages to dig up a lot of forgotten art from magazines all over the world as well as texture dumps and unused files.

Any fans of Mario or absurdity in general should definitely check SMB out. I have no idea where this stuff comes from, but I am living a better life after knowing DK's motto according to the DKC2 trading cards is "I have but 99 lives to give to my country.

Post your favorite Mario trivia, or recommend fansites that discuss the more obscure bits of a franchise.

Been on a real Mario kick of late during the new release drought. So far I've completed/re-completed

Land
Land 2
World
64 DS
NSMBU
NSMB 2

Currently running through 3D World. I actually thought I'd hit my limit on Star World but then I got Rosalina and now I feel like I'm cheesing the game. I think this may be one of my favorite games in the Mario series.

I think I'll be able to knock out at least another 1-2 before Destiny 2 consumes all my game time. I am going for 100% completion in all of them. Also NSMBU is underrated IMO.

I got this image at the end of a MyN survey.

https://voice.my.nintendo.com/app/upload/templates/MyNintendo//files/thankyou_01.png

Any idea what its origin is?

It appears to be from classic Mario artist Yoichi Kotabe, for whom there is an Iwata Asks here. The thread about this Iwata Asks is here.

Kotabe-san's current works are reasonably rare. He seems to have provided the character portraits for 3D World and as detailed in HoL's thread above, he also did some art for 3DL. I don't think he's done a lot recently for Nintendo otherwise, except maybe Nintendo's illustrations of the Wii U difference, detailed in this thread.

(In researching his art, I also came across this link, about what was likely his work on Doki Doki Panic.)

Kotabe-san's Kyoto Report page can be found here.

I feel like I've seen those poses used as general advertising pieces, such as on a kids poster, albeit with different lineups (it had DK and Bowser Jr the one I recall). But the Waluigi in particular sticks out to me with that pose, definitely seen it before.

So I'm guessing they're just individual character pieces by Kotabe used for various media that have been grouped together.

Not totally relevant, but why are the numbers and some words crossed out on these stamps? Are they not valid? Or is it something else to do with Japanese stamps?

Edit, oops accidentally cross-posted in a linked thread. Anyway the answer is:
It's so that you can't just copy the stamps online onto sticker paper to forge your own stamps. It's the same with Forever stamps.

Probably the best Nintendo renderings of him I've yet seen.

I like it, but i think ge looked perfect in the 3d world promotional art, more animated with less realistic textures, almost wish they would have done something like that. But like i said this look in itself is interesting and i do still like it quite a bit

Something like this for instance, softer texture work but it looks more natural to marios typically cartoony aesthetics

I see what you mean, paragonpro.

When they did the realistic textures for Mario in Smash games at first (I think it was Brawl that brought that first), I didn't like it so much. But the way they've done it in Odyssey still carries the essence of Mario that you posted in 3D World. Plus I like the detail on his hair. I've always liked seeing Mario without his cap.

Great point, Dom. I really like what you said here. Thinking on it now, seeing Mario without his cap has always been a pleasing image for me also. I wonder where I first saw it - SM64, perhaps? I think it's because it humanizes him further. Those are the little touches I always like in Mario games.
