Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor - Saturday August 26th |OT| FOOK / YEAAAH

McGregor had no chance, people were blinded by the hype. Make no mistake if this was a MMA fight McGregor would most likely finish it in the 1st or 2nd round.

There was a few times when Conor grabbed Mayweather when he turned and you just knew he wanted to pick him up and slam him on the ground lol.You could also notice that when Mayweather put down his head Conor stopped and literally didn't know what to do after he was told several times not to hit him in the back of the head.

A top level pro boxer in the prime of their career would lose handily in an MMA bout to any of the top 10-15 guys at their weight. They'd have to devote several years of training in wrestling, submission and kickboxing to change that. And they'd have to re-learn how to stand, distribute their weight, etc. Very little crosses over from one sport to the other.

No I was responding to the "Mayweather would lose in the Octogan" statements as if that was relevent or wasnt already obvious.

I'm not going into that rabbit hole of MMA vs Boxing.

If you get knocked down you get 10 seconds.
If you get gassed out it's Tko?

I don't understand boxing.

So you think it wise to let a man stand there while the other guy punches him in the head for 3 minutes straight? People have died when they have allowed that to continue.

I think it was a bit premature but it was still a justified stopping. With that being said, there was 1:30 left in the round, and the sight of Mayweather standing over McGregor would have hurt his brand by quite a bit.

Dana knows, and was "happy with the stoppage".

I wish it would have gone longer for the spectacle, but if it happened and Conor assuredly gets knocked out and brain-damaged, there would be a level of culpability by the ref and commision knowing McGregor isn't a skilled enough boxer to protect himself during moments of adversity like that.

Has anyone made a video yet of Conor shit talking Floyd and how he's going to embarrass him, then cut in footage of himself hugging Floyd and giving him love taps?

Well this place needs some levity...

Apparently, there are still people that thought this was ever an even contest.

It separates the people that know what they are talking about, from the stans.

I'm a huge fan of conor. I even thought he'd do some damage. Happy to admit I totally underestimated boxing skill and how his power translates to the sport.

It's buzzards to see people contorting what they saw as some great or admirable showing.

I don't know, give him a 10 second breather?

I under stand why it was stopped, his brain doesn't need to be turned into jello. But if he hit the mat he would get a count? Or would it have still been Tko.

The ref should have let him pop the bag. Would have been definitive. Crowd would have went bonkers over a knock out. McGregor was staggering it would have taken one or two more shots. Fun fight.

And what if Conor goes staggering and crashes down and bounces his head off the mat? And then doesn't wake up?

The guy was physically exhausted and hurt. Wanting to see him get hurt more and potentially very seriously at that is not something to desire.

See...

This is something a lot of MMA fans aren't taking into consideration. I see the "he lasted that long against Floyd and in his natural realm and if Floyd went into the octagon then-" comments and it's like "well Floyd did what he's always done, he told you what he'd do before the match, told you what he did after the match" and in the match it all went the way he stated. It's not like Floyd didn't go in for the kill because he couldn't, he just doesn't do that, he puts on a show and it made the fight look better because of it. It is what it is.

Maybe Floyd's too smart for people. Idk. Make all the reading jokes you want, you can't read the guy's strategy.

It was pretty obvious he was feeling him up and letting him tire himself out. When Conor started breathing hard Floyd started walking him down until he couldn't even lift his arms anymore. When that happened he went for the KO and got it.

It's at the ref's discretion- but he almost certainly wouldn't have gotten a count if he had gone down during that last flurry.

He wasn't even getting his hands up to protect himself. Letting it continue wasn't going to change anything. Besides let Conor take further damage.

Understood. And agreed, really.

I should make it clear though, for the record I dont think it would be particularly easy for a boxer to adapt to the rules, techniques and tactics required to be effective in MMA. (And as referenced in the thread, its been done before earlier and the results were as people expected)

But we'll see in another spectacle if a boxer again decides to try to go a few rounds with an MMA fighter in the octogan.

Watch that entire round. His head was floyds plaything. Conor was exhausted. He wasn't going to do anything.

He was beaten the way all commentators said. Tired himself out.

I honestly thought it was a gag. That he was going to pretend to be tired then BOOM. but then his face started turning red... and his arms stopped arming...his legs wobbled.. he was breathing hard.

Then he kept getting tagged.

It should be obvious but here we are with some people not getting it. Floyd was just like "alright lemme move in now" and there we have it.

Boxers or in general combat fighters get knocked out all the time. Your taking it to the nth degree. Especially since Conor does not have a glass jaw. Conor seemed alert after the fact he was just gassed. It is what it is I understand why the ref did it though. A knockout would have just been money in the bank.

Guys.

Conor was so tired he could not lift his hands up to block Floyd's shots.

When a fighter cannot reasonably defend themselves, the fight is over. Period.

Goddamn, both sides of this Boxing vs MMA discussion have been acting like petty children in here.

Conor took it to Floyd in Floyd's wheelhouse and got easily outplayed. Floyd could have won with one hand behind his back. Inversely, if Floyd came to do MMA, he would get BTFO himself. It's just what it is. Floyd has 20+ years in this game and he's the best of the best.

It doesn't really necessitate a discussion on which sport > the other sport. Both sports have their merits, required skills and professional athletes at the top of their game. Don't use this carny fight as a example to chest-thump or shit on the other.

Exactly, it wasnt like he was defending on got hit by a few well-timed shots, he was literally a human punching bag and mayweather kept throwing him from rope to rope.

Conor could've taken a knee to get that 10 second breather, but that's on Conor. It's actually something experienced boxers do when they know they are hurt and need those seconds to recompose.

But in this case that wouldn't have done much for Conor, he was just too exhausted to even lift his arms to guard himself.

The hell are you on with this both sides crap, outsode of like one poster or so, no one ever suggested Mayweather was going to ever do anything to Connor in the octagon.

But a more than few people seem to think Connor was just gassed and was ever in any position to do anything in this match.

Ones an irrelevant statement and the other is pure denial & delusion.

I don't understand boxing.

If you're not defending yourself or fighting back your going to end up on your back sooner or later so the ref is just stepping in to prevent unnecessary damage.

You can get knocked down from a good shot and get back up. It happens. If you're being chased around doing nothing though there's a good chance you're just going to end up getting hurt.

edit: I see it was already answered. Nevermind.

Any one think McGregor will take any more boxing paydays? I can't see too many boxers taking a chance in the octagon.

No, being a good mma striker, doesn't mean you can touch a boxer. I wouldn't buy a ppv again.. I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't, that contributed to this being so huge in the first place.

This broke the mold for sports entertainment. We probably won't see something as big as this for a while.. I mean the combination of ufc, and boxing. We've done wrestling -> ufc.. not sure what other combinations can be made.

Maybe John Jones and brick Lesnar in a no drug testing match... but....

Yeah. I'm not a Floyd fan and wanted Conor to win but never expected him to. Floyd played it perfectly and didn't put himself at risk at all.
