Sprites that look like things they're not supposed to

trying to decipher this

I never understood how to read Grahf's portrait when I played Xenogears way back when. It was just a whole lotta nonsense.
I still can't see what it's supposed to be. Like, I'll see it, find a high-res image to understand what it's supposed to look like, and then come back to this thread a few months later, and again I forget what he's supposed to look like.

I'm an idiot, but I just realized these guys from Chrono Trigger...

...don't have a head with a beak or something sitting on top of a collar of petals and that the upper middle part is just a fifth petal. I'm still not sure if the middle of the petals is a hole/mouth like a pitcher plant or an actual thing like the eye of a sunflower though.

Loving this thread! As a kid i used to see the zombies in Castlevania as sidewalking ghosts. The two black dots were the eyes and the big black one the mouth :D

I saw him wrong. The top of his hands are the same color as the wrong "face," the bottom of them could easily be in shadow.

Every other character in the game has a very obvious face by comparison. Agahnim's has too few pixels, and they're in close proximity to each other. Diagonal pixels like that at low resolution are notoriously bad for representing things clearly. I mean, this is literally his face:

It's just confusing.

If I was going to redesign him, I might do something like this, to make the eyes more obvious:

Some of you have really creative vision. I can't for the life of me see some of the things others are seeing like sitting Ashe, WC Peon and Super Mario phone.

(Link's death sprite from the GBC Zeldas)
That sprite confused me for years. I thought Link got a bowler hat and sat down all depressed with his arms in front.
I still don't know what it's supposed to represent.

Kind of looks like Luigi twerkin.

This thread reminded me.

To this day, I see the white buttons on Mario's overalls in this sprite as just buck teeth of his.

Like, he's got a mouth that huge or something.

I know they're buttons but damn it, they look like buck teeth.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I just dont understand what its trying to reference besides cock sucking. What were they trying to convey? Did anyone ever find out?

Could be a handjob. Other than that I've got nothing.

I just remembered this one from playing Metroid NES back in the day:

I edited the bottom one to look a bit like how I saw it: I saw the 'claws' as really big eyes sticking out downward, like you're looking at it top-down and it's oriented to always be looking downward with its wings facing backward.

Still was decently intimidating, considering how aggressive they were, haha.

Took me 20 years but i finally saw that this logo wasnt a witch, but rather a unicorn

I always looked at the poisoner as its eyes being the big red spots, not the black dots on his little head

FF6 is sort of known for its huge and ultra-detailed enemy sprites but when I was little, I had a real hard time figuring out what some of these things were supposed to be.

Like this thing:
Abolisher.jpg

I always thought it looked like some sort of creature with a hunched back, bony skeleton arms, bird's legs, a cloak, and a rotted jack-o'-lantern for a head.

oh, and some flowing Fabio hair for some reason.
and it's facing the wrong way.

Like, what the hell?

Even though I've seen that render I musn't have made the connection. I always assumed it was a frog with its head pointing upward (the bright dots vaguely representing eyes, the black upper line being the crease of the mouth), like something from Wind in the Willows.

Can you tell what it is now? If not, it's a humanoid vulture. Looks based on the Vrock demon from Dungeons and Dragons, a ton of Final Fantasy monsters are derived heavily from D&D.

I always saw the black dots around his mouth as his eyes, and the blue underneath as a moustache

Pokemon Red/Blue sprites. Funnily enough, while a few of the sprites you see for wild Pokemon are already bad, the back sprites (for Pokemon you yourself are sending into battle) are positively horribad.

Bellsprout, Marowak, Jynx, Flareon and Aricuno always stood out as being particularly wonky.

And Charmeleon

Not really, because back sprites were actually enlarged 2x compared to the rest of the game, so they looked pixellated even back then.

Holy shit at that one. I always thought the mouth was his eyes. To be fair, how was I supposed to know he has no visible eyes?

Right one's what I saw. Kind of a messy sprite to be honest, though the blue backdrop sure isn't helping either.
