Sprites that look like things they're not supposed to

Destiny cover art..

That is NOT a master chief helmet, it is the back of his head..
this fucks with my eyes, i see chief in poncho not the back of a titan, i only noticed other day when i got the theme and saw the position of his gun.. cant unsee, had to delete theme.

God damn, I liked that cover! Now I cannot unsee it. :(

This thread makes a great case of people not trusting everything they see... especially when so many people are told how other people view it and it suddenly 'makes sense' and you really see it. It's a really weird phenomenon for sure.

this might help

Some of yous guys... I don't know how you're seeing what you're seeing.

That looks a lot like sven.

I'm pretty sure that's Jesus riding a horse.

last one is a football playerbin a number 7 jersey having his shoulder cleaved off by an axe.

lmao, my perception is now a footbal player with a number 7 jersey carrying a horse in his left arm.

I've always seen that as the skull of a dinosaur fossil. What was the original skill with that icon?

It has been awhile but I think it is one of the dispels in the game. The hyper link is off Lina's skill set in WC3 Dota.

The Black Omen is a Star Destroyer and not some sort of weird-ass flying tower.

Agahnim is a pretty awfully-made sprite, but I think this is the worst. I refuse to believe ANYONE thought that thing was a Star Destroyer when they were playing the game back in the mid-90's.

Black Omen is blowing my mind like nothing else in this thread. Maybe it would have helped if they rotated it 90° or made it move around a little bit. I think the stationary nature of the thing is part of what made it seem like a giant floating pyramid.

The peon portrait in Warcraft 2 threw me off for years. Probably due to his right eye just barely being visible so I hardly even noticed it.

His left ear looked like his left eye and that he was winking or something. The left cheek was some kind of beak and the tusk his smiling mouth.

THANK YOU!

I'm glad someone else saw this because for the longest time while playing it drove me nuts! For those who can't see it, I made a quick GIF to highlight both ways this is seen.

I was feeling smugly superior for seeing all the other sprites mentioned correctly all these years, until this. I too thought they were arms and not the soles of his shoes :/.

I thought it was the other way around - the large, diagonal part of the sprite are his arms hanging down and the single pixels on the bottom are his feet / shoes.

Well that changes things. Forced sprite perspectives can do weird things.

The Agahnim one pisses me off more than it should. I want to grab everyone who saw him wrong and just shake them by the shoulders. It doesn't make any sense to me at all that someone could see him wrong, especially considering his hands which are right next to his real face are the same color.

I saw him wrong. The top of his hands are the same color as the wrong "face," the bottom of them could easily be in shadow.

Every other character in the game has a very obvious face by comparison. Agahnim's has too few pixels, and they're in close proximity to each other. Diagonal pixels like that at low resolution are notoriously bad for representing things clearly. I mean, this is literally his face:

It's just confusing.

If I was going to redesign him, I might do something like this, to make the eyes more obvious:

Sorry, you pyramid folks are all crazy to me. :D The shadow and perspective are good indicators enough.

I'll never understand the reasoning for Aghanim's huge divergence from his concept art to his in-game sprite.

He would have been perfectly readable with the latter:

I knew it wasn't but I always saw the plasma gun in Doom as a guy's wrinkled forehead with a centre parting. Could never unsee it.

Also I saw faces in Tomb Raider's pixelated wall textures all the time.

This one is messing with me. I CAN cover the right side of the sprite and see the face you and others have seen. But as soon as you uncover the rest of the sprite the illusion is lost. What did you interpret the rest of the sprite as?

Most things I get. Even the ones that make no logical sense like crouching Mario turning into a bird. But this one seems impossible to view incorrectly unless you are ignoring 60% of the visual information on screen.

That's a surprisingly good redesign but it seems to be using more colors than the sprite could afford on a real SNES.

WHAT?!? I've gone my entire adult like assuming he was a dog. Which was fine! I mean it's a FF game and your playable characters in VI include a Moogle, a Yeti, a child that mimics beasts and a nomad who lives inside a gigantic worm. I never once thought that him being a dog was strange in any way so there was no reason to be at all confused.
Can anyone explain what this is supposed to actually be? I mean, at best it looks like a trainer is down on his knees and yanking the guy's shorts down if not in the middle of already... servicing him.
The left announcer looks like he's giving us the finger and the one on the right looks like he's holding both his hands under his chin, pouting.

When I first saw this game I had no concept of what an FPS was. I saw the pistol as a helmet and the hand as a brown cape or leather jacket. Thought it was a TPS, without knowing the term. When I picked up the shotgun I was suprised that the character changed so much. Must be a backpack for ammo or something, I thought. Then I fired it, and there was the pump action motion. I was shocked and really had no idea of what was going on..

You've got to be kidding me. I've been seeing it wrong for decades.

I'm legitimately shocked because the pixel art in that game is otherwise some of the best of the 16 bit era.

His face is black and he is wearing gloves. His face isn't the same color as his hands. The black zorro mask interpretation is incorrect. Look at the sideview sprite you will see that Agahnim has a black face with brown lips. His face looks similar to skullkid and Jynx.

This sprite helped sell it the wrong way for me. It looks like the red mouth (red gem in headdress) opens wider. This is the diagonal sprite so you see all of the red gem. You can see both eyes on the blackface.

The face part:

Why didn't they just make him look more like the concept/promotional art? Someone redid the sprites to look like the drawing. I think it is mostly better. I am not sure how well the red eyes read though. Also I sort of see a red beard instead of the face scarf. Maybe I just suck at seeing pixel art.

Why is Agahnim's head so long anyways? The perspective is messed up. The top of his headress shouldn't be tall unless he is a conehead. That sprite was just goofy.

this happened to me quite a bit with amano monster art

I am not sure how people are seeing the hands and face as the same color.

I know it isn't from a game, but Zartan hair or hood?

A clear light-source also helps his hood look less like hair as well. I suspect the original sprite was actually only half a sprite and then mirrored it, explaining the bad shading. Then again aLttP is rife with bad shading, so it's hard to say if this was just poor craftsmanship or questionable optimisation. The altered palette makes a big difference too. It becomes clear what the skintone is, so the only other problematic element that people seemed to mis-read were the trim of the robe that some thought to be "legs". That can still stand to be altered a bit to ensure they don't connect with the feet.

For a while I thought the eyes were the red part, not the white on the side. The OG sprite didn't help, IMO.

348.png
Ah crud, you're right. The red aren't the eyes.

Yeah, just called my brother over to the room and showed him Aganhim sprite.

He was like "I fucking told you, stubborn idiot".

And he's right. For almost 20 years, he was right all along.

I'm actually a little annoyed this NEVER gets referenced ever.
Super Smash could have TOTALLY made a colour palette of this (especially since other characters got such respectful treatment). Or a new game + for A Link Between Worlds. :p

You should play Wind Waker.

I'm not seeing this one. I even covered the other side of his face with my thumb and I still can't see how you thought that...

Please refer to my post above.

I beat Xenogears a few times as a kid and I was always confused by Grahf's profile pic. I'm pretty sure I always saw the other ear as a nose, or at least I remember seeing it that way for a long period of my experience with it. I think I would have benefitted from a 3/4th's angle where I saw more of his other eye instead of a straight on profile.
