Destiny cover art..
That is NOT a master chief helmet, it is the back of his head..
this fucks with my eyes, i see chief in poncho not the back of a titan, i only noticed other day when i got the theme and saw the position of his gun.. cant unsee, had to delete theme.
From Lone Survivor. It's a surgeon's mask, not a smile.
Omg! This blows me away along with the emperor from FF.From a similar thread on this that we had before http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=854929
Look at those beautiful white hair... there's some silly people that think it's a hat, poor bastards.
this might help
Some of yous guys... I don't know how you're seeing what you're seeing.
I'm pretty sure that's Jesus riding a horse.
last one is a football playerbin a number 7 jersey having his shoulder cleaved off by an axe.
I've always seen that as the skull of a dinosaur fossil. What was the original skill with that icon?
could never comprehend how the big white thing was a helmet on a groundhog.
his profile view always looks like a rhino with a big collar or something.

Because the top of the structure is really this part:
The Black Omen is a Star Destroyer and not some sort of weird-ass flying tower.
The peon portrait in Warcraft 2 threw me off for years. Probably due to his right eye just barely being visible so I hardly even noticed it.
His left ear looked like his left eye and that he was winking or something. The left cheek was some kind of beak and the tusk his smiling mouth.
I was feeling smugly superior for seeing all the other sprites mentioned correctly all these years, until this. I too thought they were arms and not the soles of his shoes :/.
Well that changes things. Forced sprite perspectives can do weird things.Black Omen from Chrono Trigger:

Agh from A Link to the Past.
YES. I had this problem.
For a while I thought the eyes were the red part, not the white on the side. The OG sprite didn't help, IMO.
The Agahnim one pisses me off more than it should. I want to grab everyone who saw him wrong and just shake them by the shoulders. It doesn't make any sense to me at all that someone could see him wrong, especially considering his hands which are right next to his real face are the same color.
This meme's always been a bit of a stretch to me.Someone on /v/ looked at Robotnik and got this of all things:
Emperor Gestahl always looked like a dog to me.
the mobile remake makes it much clearer
Agahnim is a pretty awfully-made sprite, but I think this is the worst. I refuse to believe ANYONE thought that thing was a Star Destroyer when they were playing the game back in the mid-90's.
Sorry, you pyramid folks are all crazy to me. The shadow and perspective are good indicators enough.
I'll never understand the reasoning for Aghanim's huge divergence from his concept art to his in-game sprite.I saw him wrong. The top of his hands are the same color as the wrong "face," the bottom of them could easily be in shadow.
Every other character in the game has a very obvious face by comparison. Agahnim's has too few pixels, and they're in close proximity to each other. Diagonal pixels like that at low resolution are notoriously bad for representing things clearly. I mean, this is literally his face:
It's just confusing.
If I was going to redesign him, I might do something like this, to make the eyes more obvious:
He would have been perfectly readable with the latter:

WHAT?!? I've gone my entire adult like assuming he was a dog. Which was fine! I mean it's a FF game and your playable characters in VI include a Moogle, a Yeti, a child that mimics beasts and a nomad who lives inside a gigantic worm. I never once thought that him being a dog was strange in any way so there was no reason to be at all confused.
Can anyone explain what this is supposed to actually be? I mean, at best it looks like a trainer is down on his knees and yanking the guy's shorts down if not in the middle of already... servicing him.
What the actual f***...!For a while I thought the eyes were the red part, not the white on the side. The OG sprite didn't help, IMO.
When I first saw this game I had no concept of what an FPS was. I saw the pistol as a helmet and the hand as a brown cape or leather jacket. Thought it was a TPS, without knowing the term. When I picked up the shotgun I was suprised that the character changed so much. Must be a backpack for ammo or something, I thought. Then I fired it, and there was the pump action motion. I was shocked and really had no idea of what was going on..

as an addendum to the op
this happened to me quite a bit with amano monster art

A clear light-source also helps his hood look less like hair as well. I suspect the original sprite was actually only half a sprite and then mirrored it, explaining the bad shading. Then again aLttP is rife with bad shading, so it's hard to say if this was just poor craftsmanship or questionable optimisation. The altered palette makes a big difference too. It becomes clear what the skintone is, so the only other problematic element that people seemed to mis-read were the trim of the robe that some thought to be "legs". That can still stand to be altered a bit to ensure they don't connect with the feet.I'll never understand the reasoning for Aghanim's huge divergence from his concept art to his in-game sprite.

I refuse to believe you
This looks so much worse when the red parts aren't the eyes

I thought the eyes were the red things exactly until reading your post.

This one is messing with me. I CAN cover the right side of the sprite and see the face you and others have seen. But as soon as you uncover the rest of the sprite the illusion is lost. What did you interpret the rest of the sprite as?
Most things I get. Even the ones that make no logical sense like crouching Mario turning into a bird. But this one seems impossible to view incorrectly unless you are ignoring 60% of the visual information on screen.
I'm not seeing this one. I even covered the other side of his face with my thumb and I still can't see how you thought that...
