Super Mario World, big size Mario or Luigi, tap down repeatedly
I still can't see what it's supposed to be. Like, I'll see it, find a high-res image to understand what it's supposed to look like, and then come back to this thread a few months later, and again I forget what he's supposed to look like.I never understood how to read Grahf's portrait when I played Xenogears way back when. It was just a whole lotta nonsense.
These are all great.
I saw him wrong. The top of his hands are the same color as the wrong "face," the bottom of them could easily be in shadow.
Every other character in the game has a very obvious face by comparison. Agahnim's has too few pixels, and they're in close proximity to each other. Diagonal pixels like that at low resolution are notoriously bad for representing things clearly. I mean, this is literally his face:
It's just confusing.
If I was going to redesign him, I might do something like this, to make the eyes more obvious:
I wasn't ready for Crash HD.
How I saw it, silly face with a stupid purple hat:

really? lolI wasn't ready for Crash HD.

Something like this basically:
I'm an idiot, but I just realized these guys from Chrono Trigger...
...don't have a head with a beak or something sitting on top of a collar of petals and that the upper middle part is just a fifth petal. I'm still not sure if the middle of the petals is a hole/mouth like a pitcher plant or an actual thing like the eye of a sunflower though.

(Link's death sprite from the GBC Zeldas)
That sprite confused me for years. I thought Link got a bowler hat and sat down all depressed with his arms in front.
I still don't know what it's supposed to represent.
Wtf did you think all the yellow was then?
Some of you people ignore like half the image to get to your crazy conclusion lol
Kind of looks like Luigi twerkin.

Yeah. It always looked like a face on a pirate's map/piece of parchment.
I just dont understand what its trying to reference besides cock sucking. What were they trying to convey? Did anyone ever find out?
Always looked like a digitized version of

Did bit of photoshopping on that pokemon sprite. Like this?

Not a sprite, but a related example most of us should be familiar with:
Those orange things are not the eyes.
Took me 20 years but i finally saw that this logo wasnt a witch, but rather a unicorn
FF6 is sort of known for its huge and ultra-detailed enemy sprites but when I was little, I had a real hard time figuring out what some of these things were supposed to be.
Like this thing:
I always thought it looked like some sort of creature with a hunched back, bony skeleton arms, bird's legs, a cloak, and a rotted jack-o'-lantern for a head.
oh, and some flowing Fabio hair for some reason.
and it's facing the wrong way.
Like, what the hell?
In their mouths?
You know. Casting spells.
Even though I've seen that render I musn't have made the connection. I always assumed it was a frog with its head pointing upward (the bright dots vaguely representing eyes, the black upper line being the crease of the mouth), like something from Wind in the Willows.
Pokemon Red/Blue sprites. Funnily enough, while a few of the sprites you see for wild Pokemon are already bad, the back sprites (for Pokemon you yourself are sending into battle) are positively horribad.
Bellsprout, Marowak, Jynx, Flareon and Aricuno always stood out as being particularly wonky.
Not really, because back sprites were actually enlarged 2x compared to the rest of the game, so they looked pixellated even back then.
Holy shit at that one. I always thought the mouth was his eyes. To be fair, how was I supposed to know he has no visible eyes?
