Wkd BO 09•01-03•17 - Labor Day WEAKend box office has nothing as Bodyguard 3peats

I have only seen youtube clips of the Twilight films. Someone once posted one where the characters are ripping each others heads off in a simulated battle that they are doing inside their mind or something.
It's way dumber than that, because it's literally the entire final act of the final film of the franchise, was heavily user in the marketing, and you don't know it's a vision until it ends. After the vision ends they all go "oh..." and head home.

Deadline is now saying $49.6M for IT on Friday. But somehow only $101M for the weekend...

Saturday would have to be down over Friday proper AND Sunday would have to drop 50% to get $101M off a Friday start of almost $50M.

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
I always like seeing people discover how totally fucking nuts the last Twilight movie is.

The official Friday estimate for IT is $51M

Edit: I see that it was posted already. Just woke up!

Anyhow, this weekend will be well over $100M

Bigger opening day than Spider-Man: Homecoming. Only behind Beauty and the Beast and Guardians 2 for the year, I think.

I had easily the biggest prediction among any of us, and IT beat my opening day prediction by 10%. Absolutely jawdropping OD and on the same level of impressiveness as American Sniper and Deadpool.

It's too bad that the Holiday boost puts Deadpool out if range, even with a decent bump today.

Friday Studio Estimates:

1) IT - $51M
2) Home Again - $3.1M
3) The Hitman's Bodyguard - $1.4M (-44%) - $61M total
4) Annabelle Creation - $1.2M (-35%) - $93M total
5) Wind River - $970k (-35%) - $23M total
6) Leap! - $565k (-47%) - $14M total
7) Dunkirk - $550k (-41%) - $182M total
8) Logan Lucky - $510K (-55%) - $24M total
9) Spider-Man Homecoming - $510k (-37%) - $326M total
10) Girls Trip - $245k (-58%) - $113M total

- IT will make more this weekend than the entire Top 12 from the past two weekends combined.

- Thanks to a run of terrible weeks at the box office, Spider-Man Homecoming will become one of those rare films that manages 10 straight weekends in the Top 10.

- Annabelle's drop is lighter than expected. I wonder if it was grabbing some of the runoff from sold out showings to IT.

Wind River continues to have a good run. There's no overlap with the IT audience and River, so the monster debut didn't ding it. Glad to see.

Spider-Man Homecoming passed the $50M mark in China after 2 days. This probably puts the worldwide total over $800M by the end of today. Its opening weekend there will certainly be over $70M now. The only MCU films with bigger openings in China were Age of Ultron and Civil War.

Wind River's run has been a beefier version of Hell or High Water's run last year. Based on the final take for HoHW, I could see Wind River hitting $35M. Not bad for an $11M film, with lighter P&A spending.

I saw 46 of you, including a couple of joke answers. Let me know if you posted as part of the contest and are not in the list above.

Not counting the $1 and $250M predictions, The Box Office GAF average was $77.81M.

Thanks to those who spread their guesses out.

Here's how I will determine who wins the prizes:

1) More than one winner: In the few cases where there were two identical predictions, the person who posted their guess first will get first dibs of the two games up for grabs, and the other person will get the remaining game. In cases where there are 3 or more identical predictions, I will let a RNG choose the two winners, and then use the "posted first" method above to decide who gets first dibs on choosing a game.

2) One winner, but more than one runner-up: The winner will get first dibs on the game of their choice. I will let a RNG pick the runner up from the pool of identical answers.

Again, the games up for grabs are Soma and Killing Floor 2, both on PC/Steam.

If you win, but have one or both of those, let me know. It will make things easier. Ditto if you don't have a PC that will run those (I don't think either is particularly demanding though), or just hate PC gaming. Or hey, maybe you hate gaming in general now. This is the OT!

You'll still have bragging rights for winning.

So, barring an act of God, it looks like Biggest Geek Ever easily won this contest. Congrats!

Even if IT falls into a black hole Saturday and Sunday, B-G-E and AdventureRacing are going to be our two contest winners. Congrats!

I will wait for tomorrow's official weekend estimates before deciding to send out PMs regarding prizes. If IT lands more than $5M above BGE's prediction in the estimates, we can just skip waiting for the Monday actuals. Even Irma and Football won't throw off the Sunday estimate by over 20%.

Did you make a prediction?

I picked a dollar over I Am Legend, to give it the largest opening of anything that could have been counted as a horror hybrid film.

Which was actually pretty close to the GAF average. Which was $10-15M above tracking at that point. All varying degrees of wrong.

Thanks guys.

It's nice to have a reaffirmation that I'm not a flailing idiot after blowing it on m Spider-Man and Dunkirk's legs.

No guts no glory I guess!

I am almost always conservative with my predictions and projections. Which means that I am always wrong when we get a breakout performance. See a lot of my earlier Wonder Woman projections this year. It works most of the time though.

I didn't see this coming at all. 80 or 90m, sure. 110m+ wowzers! WB having a solid year, especially considering they have another 800m+ film releasing in 2 months.

WB will pass Universal to take second place for 2017 among the various studios. They should pass and remain ahead of Disney for most of the rest of the year as well. But then The Last Jedi hits.

(am I deploying this correctly? Is this right? I never watched Dragonball)

That works quite well in this situation, since all the people of earth leant energy to Goku to help him make that Spirit bomb and vanquish evil.

Evil clown fever sweeping the nation. Bring back Doink the clown gimmick, WWE.

The time is now.

True story: Matt Osborne did a stint in the Portland Wrestling promotion for a time (as did Roddy Piper and some other pro wrestling notables), and while he was here, he ran a red light one night (not sure if he was intoxicated or not, it was about 30 years ago) and smashed his car into another car that my oldest sister was in. Completely fucked up her spine and jaw. He shortly afterwards joined a promotion across the country and basically used that as an excuse to duck having to pay for her hospital bills and recuperation for something like a decade straight.

I'm not sure dude ever did actually pay for what he did, come to think of it.

Anyway, Matt Osborne was a reckless piece of shit who almost killed my sister one night.

Doink the Clown is an okay gimmick though.
