PewDiePie calls someone a "fucking n****r" during PUBG livestream

Jim Sterling put up a good one today. Though, as a Youtuber myself, I'm not against the "Muh YT Money" stance. PDP single-handedly caused the Adpocolypse and hurt a lot of great, legit channels

Now that you mention it, I do see the point, I just found the focus of the video a little off given the nature of the controversy. PDP screaming "fucking n****r" and Jim making a video about how YTers are victims too, is technically not wrong but maybe not what I expected from the vid. Jim did denounce PDP unequivocally of course. He is nothing like the other bunch of cowards.

Seriously, why are the big time people coming up and defending him? If it was a first time accidental thing I would understand but this clearly isn't the case.

Is there some sort of YouTube league of content creators or something?

I think people didn't expect or the gaming industry of streamers to be as capitalistic this quickly and aggressively. The specific realm only recently began to be huge.

I'm still trying to understand how gaming culture became like this. It's worse than any other media industry regards to this.
Take youthful stupidity, add a dash of Internet anonymity, remove consequences and parental oversight, and sprinkle with soft bigotry. Bake at 375°.

Liriks responses to his responses. Basically he's just trying to say 'everyones bad, stop pretending you're good'. Straight up reflection.

ffs lirik why do you have to be like this.
Jesus. Why are there so many defensive fucks out there who think they have to set people straight on what offends them and how they should react to it? And he makes so many blanket claims while doing so.

Damn, "both sides" is actually being used as a legitimate argument by people defending him?

:(

That is truly sad

The real problem with these influential Youtubers is that they are influential, and in PDP's case he is not remotely close to someone who should be influencing kids. The world is a confusing place for preteens and teenagers, and they are looking for context and answers to serious issues. They aren't sure exactly how to feel about certain issues. But when PDP or any of these youtubers make light of issues like white supremacy and racism, the kids compartmentalize the issues in a way that allows them to think "it's ok to use racist slurs in my normal language, people who get upset are the problem, not the use of the word." That influence leads to adopting a consistent worldview that aligns with PDP's racism, maybe that it's ok to be a bigot. Maybe it's ok to agree with white supremacists. Maybe it's true that people are all just too PC and SJWs are the real problem, etc.

Good post

Even SBF is on "both sides"?
If you payed attention to their videos you would pick up on the subtle jokes they make about Trump, conservatives and the alt right. They don't they take hard political stances, but they are clearly liberal. They stopped making certain jokes in videos because it offended people, they do a good job without jumping into the fray.

The both sides argument always pisses me off. It's an argument that almost always comes from one side.

It's so stupid in this regard.

"bu bu I'm not saying what PDP was right but both sides are wrong here! bu bu"

WTF is the other side of PDP saying the n-word?

Why would they want to do anything with this? Why would they care? And Woolie

is black, so I'm sure they don't support saying the n-word.

Like I said, any time they say anything that can be construed as hateful or racist they immediately apologize and are like "oh shit we didn't realize" like Pat calling Bean the Dynamite "Beaner" because he didn't know the name.

If your job has u scared to say "it's wrong to use the N word", your job is already a hellhole of a place that's a terrible job. Additionally, you're spineless.

??

Both TB and Jim said its fucking wrong man while in addition fear what effect this might have on their damn job.

Is it that hard to put yourself in their shoes?

None of them is deflecting anything, and are saying straight up its wrong, god forbid they are worried about their income!

Ah, right. I always get those two confused for some reason.

And I see Lirik's gotten in on the action...

Is there any huge Youtuber/Twitch streamers outside of AngryJoe that haven't made an ass out of themselves in this whole mess?

Because every hot take I've seen from them has either been "but both sides tho" or "muh Youtube money!"

That foseytube fellow did come out and speak against it yesterday.

Not speaking out against racism is pragmatically no different than supporting it because the end result is the same: Injustice is allowed to continue because there are no repercussions.

PDP needs to become a pariah for this and we need to assume that anyone in the community who doesn't condemn him either agrees with him or just doesn't think racism is a big deal. If your favorite YTer doesn't condemn him, unsubscribe and encourage others to do the same. Hit them in their pocketbooks.

Zero tolerance is the ONLY way we're going to start to clean up this toxic culture.

Where does that end though? Are popular YouTubers expected to speak out every single time someone acts like a piece of shit on the website?

It just feels like people are looking for more people to condemn.

I don't need SBF to condemn PDP because I know what kind of people they are. They aren't hateful and don't support racism.

I don't say the N-word at all during my daily life - and shockingly during heated online games I also don't say the N-word.

The idea that you have no control of what you say when you get angry/heated/stressed is a bit ridiculous.

There is no possible excuse for saying it. Ignorance is not an excuse either when the word has the hate and power this word does.

I mean his reaction immediately after he says it is that he corrects himself with the word asshole. No real plausible deniability he wasn't using it as a slur.

No.
It's banned for everyone except African Americans
It's racist.

He knows perfectly well. It is not possible, no. The word isn't literally banned, but only racists use it. It's possible that small groups of black friends let their white/Asian/Hispanic friend use the word without the hard r, as I had friends in high school that told me it was fine to use with them, but I think that's not even a good idea.
You don't know the weight? Go educate yourself on the history right now instead of having this discussion.

A word of this capacity doesn't just simply slip out. I'm sure it slips out of his mouth a lot because its in his day to day vocabulary. You should probably educate yourself on the word.

He corrected himself and said he meant to say asshole, so it absolutely was said with bad intentions. And if you are aware enough that you correct yourself immediately then you can't claim ignorance of that word. If someone was actually ignorant of the word, and even that is hard to believe, they would have only been aware of it well after it was said if someone else pointed it out to them.

Damn, thanks for the responses, I had no idea.

I never used this word and I have literally zero contact with English speaking people in real life, except for my work, that's why I was in doubt.

You mean all these same Youtubers that didn't hesitate to attack the WSJ for calling out PDP' anti-Semitic remarks?

After almost a couple decades of having to deal with these racist sexist shitheads in online games and on the internet, they are going to turn around and try the "everybody does it, you are lying if you say you don't!" Fuck that.

Well the easy answer is as Let's players this could be very damaging to their bottom line. That's the main reason people seem to be speaking up.

Remember though- Jimquisition videos go up every morning, and the PDP controversy happened midday yesterday. So basically, he just tacked it onto the end of the already existing vid discussion YA BOY TMART. So I imagine he may just do another one later in the week, as he commonly does, that's more fleshed out. He even said that he wanted to do it today to escape any perception that he was complacent to it.

One of the few sensible responses we've gotten from a Youtuber/Streamer.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
2017 and we still need to have at length conversations about not screaming "nigger", folks...
Maybe I'm jaded, but I think it's just going to get worse. Not just because Trump's in the office, and tide of overt racism we're seeing now, but because I've observed kids yell that to each other like it's nothing, for years now. They just don't care for any meaning the word has. In fact I bet they think that the word has 'meaning' to old farts only. Maybe they'll grow out of it, but I think Felix was one of those kids, and he clearly hasn't. Besides, using it like that, as an insult, is inexcusable even for someone who's genuinely so naive as to not understand the meaning - but Felix is way too old now for anyone to buy that excuse anyway.

This is something I wish people who say "it's just a word, let's not give it power!" would stop and think about. Felix is using it as an insult. He is the one giving it power. He's not using it in some misguided attempt at comradery, he's using it as just another expletive - he's equating a race of people with something terrible and undesirable - so much so that that it's something he'd curse with.

Machinima might not let them either, there are reasons folks like SBF, PBG, Jared, SpaceHamster, and the like aren't speaking out and I'm sure it isn't because they condone racism

People being racist in chat are defending PDP, no doubt, not sure why he'd think they'd be the ones morally outraged.

Also trying to draw moral equivalency by saying everyone is as bad so you can avoid saying the racists are as good as everyone else is incredibly stupid.

Don't know LIRIK but speaking of streamer reactions: Has Cohh said something about this? Didn't see the beginning of the stream or if someone sended a donation message asking something. I ignore Twitch Chat but from what I've seen of his stream racism isn't welcome in it and he condones it from time to time.

Being quiet about it says a lot. Especially when you have people coming straight to his defense. It either shows you don't care or it doesn't bother you.

These people have a platform, and one person is doing things to hurt said platform and how you can possible make money.

YOU may not need people to come out and condemn, but a spotlight does need to be put on this and how wrong it is. Because if more people stay silent then the people defending him push the narrative that it's ok or "both sides"

Re: LIRIK:

It's pathetic when someone's reaction to seeing a figure criticized for something like this is to broadly presume that everyone else does it. Which is both not an actual counterpoint and also a totally empty deflection that ignores the group of people targeted by the behavior in the first place. And just as much, that's a revealing window on how awful the people they surround themselves with must be. I don't blurt out racial epithets as a matter of course, "accidently" or otherwise. Those around me who aren't racist slime sure don't. If that language and intent has seeped into who you are to that degree, don't justify it. Confront and change it on a personal level. Otherwise, yes, you're a racist piece of slime.

I think it's going to get worse because the 'both sides' argument is gaining so much traction that it even got as high as the president of the US. "bu bu what about the alt-left??"

When you use that bullshit argument you can literally justify anything.

You're right. I just find it concerning how quick people are to just say "They didn't say anything, they're probably the bad guys"

Just feels unfair.

I get you and the other people who responded though. It's a shitty situation.

Streamers like Cohh and Goth most likely want to stay fuck away from this. They both avoid addressing stuff like this.

If anything, I'm glad this thread was made as we've had 50+ stealth racists/idiots banned. Good riddance. I'm also very disappointed in Boogie, unsubbed.

Did mods tell you that every name on that list was banned because of comments in this thread?

Even if you "lose control" in the moment, the N-word should not be one of the things that comes out.

Fuck, shit, bitch, cock, piss, balls, dicks, cunt, asshole, tits, - these, as well as other words, are literally all more socially acceptable available phrases to use in the "heat of the moment".

Never has the N-word been something that I've shouted when I've wanted to be vulgar, or I wasn't thinking, or I truly wanted to be an asshole to someone. There are ways to voice aggression and "lose control" that don't take on a racial animus. And if you do say the N-word when lost in the moment, then it's too familiar to you, and you're using it when you shouldn't be when you are in control.

People are acting like PDP has Tourette syndrome or something and legitimately cannot control his words. SMH.

Exactly. The only other side here is the one saying hate speech is okay. There's no gray area, it's right or wrong. They just know their damn audience and don't want to lose that $$$. Gaming community is embarrassing to be a part of.
