The Witcher 3 controls like shit

You don't become a GOAT controlling like /shit/.

It could be better? Sure, there is room for improvement. In fact, they already improve it.

Want to play a game with shit controls? Play Star fox. Not The Witcher.
Goat? Come on , hyperbole, take it down a notch. It does not control well at all.

Controls and combat are the reasons why I put down the game despite liking everything else (though the pacing for the story wasn't great either). Tried the alternative controls when that came out and the game still feels jank.

Guys, water is really wet! Should I make a thread about it? I need some validation.

But yes, the controls were the bad part, especially against those ghost type enemies that phase through you. They did patch it somewhat making it a bit more tolerable.

No it doesn't, otherwise it wouldn't be probably the highest regarded game of this generation.

Haha. As if good gameplay was a requisite for that.

Remember GTA IV and Bioshock are some of the highest regarded game of the last generation.

PS: The way the character walks and runs in TW3 is out of Garry's Mod. It's embarrassing.

This is one of those complaints I'll never understand, I can't find any fault in how the Witcher 3 controls or plays.

It is absurdly loose. I adjusted the sensivity to my tastes but even then the character movement is soooo bad. It is a fight just to take the loot from the bodies on the floor.

It's a shame 'cause the raw mechanics in Witcher 3 kept me from progressing the game more than a dozen hours or so before completely giving up.

The traversal & combat just killed my interest in the game.

Really sucks 'cause I loved just about every other aspect of it. It's certainly a monumental achievement in storytelling, world building and visual design.

Just wasn't for me, I guess.

Have you changed the option in there to alternative controls? Assuming you're on console, it makes a world of difference. I felt the same, and then changed it, and it's much better.
I just stopped playing Witcher 3 because this.I had no idea about this option until now. Will try tonight.

You must be oblivious to it or something. Picking up the controller and moving geralt feels bad after playing games which are better mechanically, it hits you immediately.

No it doesn't hit you immediately because millions of people say it doesn't, myself and others in this thread included. You're kidding yourself if you think the only way someone can enjoy the Witcher 3 controls is through being oblivious.

PC also has the quicker less tank like control option.

It's still far worse than botw, horizon, MGS, etc, but the rest of the game far more than makes up for the sometimes frustrating controls.

Especially after playing open world games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Metal Gear Solid 5, which controls like heaven, The Witcher 3 feels like a fucking chore.

Just walking around is a suffering activity. And the animations are so poor. Not even going to discuss combat, but you can be sure it is not highly regarded for the most part because of the terrible controls.

It is such a pitty, because I want to experience the world and the story, but Jesus Christ, everytime I have to walk it is so slugish and bad.

Yup, there's also the really dumb issue on the PS4 where the camera points straight down at the ground when you're moving on the horse due to the "auto center" camera. Turning it off fixes it, but then you have to constantly adjust your camera. Baffling.

Love the witcher 3, but I came back to it this week after playing Horizon and I thought the exact same thing about the controls and movement. Brilliant game but really rough movement, character feels kind of floaty.

The Witcher 3 isn't about combat.

I personally played through on Blood and Broken Bones with minimal issue but just put it on easy and enjoy one of the most immersive and well-written RPGs of all time.

How it is not one of the best Games of all time? It's the best personally for me, but in objective terms it does so many things better than every other game out there it's almost embarrassing for everyone else.

I can understand where OP is coming from. Everything in that game feels like I'm playing a heavy tank that can barely move.

Roach is worse then the skyrim horses imo.

The games sold 6 million copies, if 6 million people disliked the controls as much as you it wouldn't be one of the most well regarded games of the generation.
Sales have zero to do with knowing who didnt like the controls. They are serviceable, no one said they break the game. Mist simple put up with them as the rest of the game is top tier.games that sell a lit can control poorly, see GTA.

No it doesn't. Horizon, Zelda, watch dogs, destiny, mgsv, mad max, infamous, etc...all control, and are technically far superior.only Bethesda games are as bad/ worse.

There is a whole bunch of games that control worse and have worse combat. Big ones being Bethesda games and FFXV for example.

Witcher 3 is middle of the road when it comes controls and combat. Serviceable and competent ,but not exactly amazing.(like Bloodborne)

Admittedly, there is room for improvement and thats ok.

I thought it was fine, not as good as MGSV to be sure, but still good enough, especially after enabling alternative controls.

I disagree about the combat.

But even despite not so amazing responsivness to player input, it's still the best game I've ever played, the whole experience is simply like nothing else.

Lol no, it does writing / quest dedign better, nothing else was great in that game.

It also has worst in class horse riding. It's incredible just how bad it is. I'm especially baffled by how you can't transition between boost mode and regular running without the horse almost coming to a full stop and then having to accelerate back up again. Made races interesting! I stopped riding and ran everywhere instead.

And the swimming somehow manages to be even worse.

Oh yeah, horse controls are awful as well. I found myself avoiding riding it because of how bad it is. But then again it is not like Geralt controls are much better...

Agreed, it feels very clunky, unresponsive and sluggish.

Not a very fun game to replay.

And I find the story very silly compare to the books, the books are way way better than the video games.

No it didnt. Witcher 2 is mediocre with a controller, but perfect with mouse and keyboard. It controls so well and snappy with a mouse, it reacts so good and instant.

It always felt to me like the way Geralt moves was designed seperately from the level-design; they're constantly at odds with each other. I'm being slightly hyperbolic, but that's just to make my point.

It also has the best graphics of an RPG, the best world and by far the best expansions of the modern era.

And lol at it only having better "quest design" in your opinion. That's like, the point of a video game.
Shame none of them are gameplay related, which tends to be the most important thing in a videogame.

I said Bethesda...not exactly a whole bunch, wither is low tier gameplay wise.

I never get this, I've never had a problem with it, even before the alternate control scheme (though I did change to it once it came out).

I did, however play it on Kb + Mouse, though, as it felt more precise vs a X360 gamepad. I thought it was just me, but maybe it wasn't.

I guess everyone is on console? :D

If you're on PC, then give the mod I linked to earlier a go. It might work for you.

ITT, from what I'm seeing: people complaining about W3 controls are probably people playing on controller @ 30FPS. On the other hand, people who are defending the controls are probably those playing on either KB+M/Controller @ >= 60FPS.

There is a world of difference between the two, especially in a game where Geralt's movements are unnatural at times. It's impossible to do apples-to-apples comparison when you aren't including platform/framerate in your comparisons. Not to mention, one of those platforms also has access to mods that help with the controls by a significant amount that people may be overlooking.

So it would help a significant amount if people were to give more information as to what platform they are playing on.
