PUBG is now the biggest game on Steam in history | over 2m CCU, beats Dota 2 peak

I think my subsequent post is a better argument to argue against. What do you feel about this:

I think if you think there's value in talking about what is "GOTY" (and frankly I think "anything can be your GOTY, who cares what anyone else thinks" is silly, the whole point of the concept is to start discussions about people's different opinions which is definitionally caring what other people think) you need some kind of ground-rules about the point you compare different games at so it feels like an apples to apples comparison -- like, you want the discussion to be about the games' relative merits, not the framing of when in release they were compared.

When comparing possible rules, I lean to "official release date" over "when made available for purchase" because the former isn't likely to hurt very many games (I doubt PUBG won't still be quite popular when it hits that final release) while the latter will really discourage the other type of early access release that's actually intended to improve early, unfinished games. I guess you could you could just say "vote for a game whenever, but only once" which is close to the GAF rule, though that can keep games from doing well since people aren't sure whether to count the current EA form or not.

In general I'm not in favor of sticking with an old rule just because it's the old rule but I do think having a consistent set of rules makes the process more fun and interesting to debate about. I'm not sure if this answers your question?

Over 200 hrs in and it's not hard to see why this game is such a phenomenon. It's hard to think of other shooter games that capture the thrill of getting the better of your opponent so well.

Popularity and quality aren't correlated. You argue a game's quality on its own merits, which I do believe the game has. Don't reply to bait posts with fallacies.

I'm still fascinated by the game's historical lineage, that is the path from Arma II to DayZ, and H1Z1 to PUBG. I believe it to be another fantastic example of the importance of mods and the facilitation to create them. I also believe that it's this facilitation to create content and iterate upon that has led to a lot of the innovation in game design, especially when you're free of low-risk publishers. I don't think it's a coincidence that some of the most played (and arguably good) games in the world such as League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and PUBG owe their existence to mods.

I was just thinking this today as well. Mod as a platform is clearly a very good way of pushing gaming forward.

I know almost nothing about the game except it's like Day-z but without zombies and competitive, what's making it a phenomenon? What is it doing that millions of Dayz clones arent?

Because it's not like DayZ at all?

Why does everyone assume this is a survival game...? It's like just ARMA shooting mechanics in a big map against 100 people.

I understand why someone might make that comparison with no knowledge of what PUBG is, but I agree it's a different game.

I think a more appropriate comparison would be that PUBG is to DayZ what Dota is to WarCraft III (or Aeon of Strife to StarCraft).

I didn't feel like getting into it, its true though!

Same could be said for PUBG tho if you think about its implementation at launch.. but that should be saved for a thread of its own! Lets focus on the insane numbers this game is pulling in :D

It's not a clone of DayZ. It has structured matches that end within 35 minutes. There are no survival elements.

100 people (solo or on teams of two or four) start on a plane flying a random straight path above a large island. They can parachute out of the plane whenever they wish. On the island, guns, grenades, and vehicles are randomly distributed. Players have to scavenge for gear and fight to be the last one to survive. Every few minutes, a large circle around the play area gets smaller and smaller, forcing the players to keep moving and get closer together, preventing drawn-out stalemates. When you die, you're out, freeing you to quit and start a new round.

The randomness of the plane and the drops keep each match feeling fresh and unpredictable, and the relatively low odds of success and quick time to the next match prevent deaths from feeling overly punishing. The systems are diverse enough to reward a lot of different strategies without being so arcane that they're tough to learn. And the heart-pumping tension you feel when you're near the end is something I've never found in any other multiplayer game.

Even with its rough edges at the moment, it delivers something very unique, in a more approachable package than a military sim.

And yet it still looks and runs like total shite. It's the single most unstable piece of software I've run on my PC in 6 years. I've found I enjoy watching it much more than playing it. TSM_Viss is a great player to watch.

I would much rather play this game in the MGSV, Battlefiled, or Call of Duty engine.

I'm sure you'll get the chance other than in MGSV

PUBG is the best in its genre by miles, it's honestly not even fair to compare it to anything else like it. PUBG still has a few kinks to work out but generally it's bug free when it matters it just needs some general polishing. It has gotten way better optimized lately and considering how large the map is and that there are 100 players on it the load times are like non existent.

It's a very damn good game and it's so easy to say "yeah let's do another one". That being said I don't think I want this to win any major awards until it leaves early access. I don't really like the idea of a game that isn't officially considered complete taking merits away from something that has been finished.

Can't wait for this game to come out in Xbox so that console players who actually played the game can share their opinions.

Thats great and all but when are they gonna polish it up so that it doesnt require 16 gb of ram and an SSD to run moderately well?

Don't know.
But who has no SSD today?
Me :( Had to cut some corners to save in the budget when I built my current PC. Decided that SSD would be something to buy separately down the line, but just still haven't gotten around to actually buying one. Hasn't really been huge inconvenience in most games, Deus Ex MD and Xcom 2 are the worst offenders I think.
