Updated PSVR unit announced

Sony, Sony, Sony. Lack of ability to upgrade Breakout Box for current owners is distressing. Thankfully I tend to stick with one game at a time, so plugging/unplugging isn't the absolute worst thing in the world. I won't bother upgrading, and I'm glad new users won't have the HDR issue.

Can't wait for Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner VR and the new RE7 DLC. I also can't wait for the tech to evolve, but it's a blast to be in on the ground floor.

yup..me too. i guess that's thecost of being an early adopter.

Why the fuck are people talking about the Switch in here?

Also, it sucks that the new box can't be used on existing headsets, but being an early adopter has it's disadvantages sometimes. Still love mine.

Some of these reactions are embarrassing lol. I am a day 1 PSVR owner with an HDR TV and while it remains an inconvenience to swap cables, I will continue to do so. This isn't even an upgrade as they have announced it yet. Sony hasn't screwed you are abandoned their early adopters. If anything, we have seen a really impressive push and commitment to PSVR.

it will really depend on the cost of the tech...

the whole selling point of PSVR is that they are marketing it as a 'middle ground' VR approach...

it's not as budget tier as Mobile VR but not as expensive and out of reach as the PCVR.....it's exist right down in the middle of the bunch (in terms of experience, performance and cost).

For PSVR to adopt what Vice/Occulus motion controller's tech, those tech needs to have less cost of manufacturing first.

After being burnt by PS3 and seeing their approach on PS4, i don't think Sony is intererested in the extreme highend everything and the kitchen sink approach and am gladly sit at the 'mid-range' vendor.......since 'mid-range' is actually the most profitable in terms of margins and adoption rate.

Still could have done a revision to the move prior to release. Its not just a method of locomotion input the move is missing. The grip buttons I would argue on the vive and touch are more important at creating a more compelling experience and opens up the controller for more intuitive actions especially when you are essentially blind to what is in your hands and the move still is focused on doing multiple things with one digit.

It doesn't need to be as advanced as the touch with digit sensing but how you use your hands in VR rather than how motion controllers were used in the past are two very different things and really the only barrier to cost should be the type of tracking system, which you are correct they are going for the middle ground and this wouldn't be prohibitive for the move.

Considering how well designed the PSVR headset is in terms of practical use the lack of consideration given to the moves do stand out. They put that thought into the aim but the only thing harder to get hold of than that at the moment is the mini SNES and few games fully support it, whereas most games support the move.

its understandable though. If I am Sony, I will rather my early adopters who want to upgrade, to rebuy a brand new $399 headset rather than a breakout box that cost less than $100 too.

Oh yeah, totally get why they would do this but it still kinda sucks for people that have PSVR now though, as this new unit isn't a massive leap forward with only minor changes. It would be nice if we at least got the option though.

That's exactly what I see here, too.
It does not harm me as a day 1 owner in any way.
If anything, it will help sell more units, making ongoing support more likely.

This is guaranteed to piss off people that already have PSVR. Too soon, Sony.

I'm fine. I don't have 4k or HDR so the breakout box thing wasn't affecting me anyways.

I'll go 4k when PS5 comes out, at which point I assume there will be a PSVR2 I can buy along with it.

I'm happy Sony are still investing in this.

I have both, you're comparing virtual reality apples with hybrid oranges. I would recommend trying PSVR and learning a little about the available and upcoming games if you feel like it has 0 to offer.
Is it really!!? At end of day they are both hardware that let you play games and both costs around $300-$400. If I had unlimited money I could buy both but in reality, I have choose which one I want to get. All I'm saying is Nintendo done more to convice mei to buy Switch than Sony did with PSVR. I also own PS4 for fuck sake, I think I have the right express my opinion here.

Now I want to change mine too but I feel like I'll be like those scalpers around. I can definitely sell it more than what I paid...

God damnit. I've only had my PSVR a month. Really wish I would have waited. Nice update. Damn. That HDR passthrough would have been nice for me. I knew there was a reason prices were going down on the now PSVR Version 1. Gotta get rid of old stock and make room.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

wait several months later. If I am Sony, I will release a standalone new breakout box "due to overwhelming requests from early adopters" for those early adopters who didn't budge with this new headset.

More than happy with my Pro & PSVR combo, I don't have a 4KTV yet and don't plan to get one soon either.

This is a nice addition though to those that have those TV's, Personally mine is already set up and when i want some VR it is really as simple as putting the headset on now, Cables aren't an issue.

All i care for really is Move controllers with analogues.

Bizarre choice of thread to voice that though.

To each their own I guess. I would rather buy $300 of Taco Bell than a Switch, and I'm sure many would agree with me.

Yeah... not many people will agree with you. Speak for yourself.

I want $300 of taco Bell than switch too but I digress.

Get that switch talk out of this thread please. If you are not into VR, get your opinion in the general VR/psvr thread instead of a thread about updated psvr headset.

Why exactly!!? This new update for PSVR, I own PS4 and I could have been potential customer If Sony done enough to convince me to drop $400 on it.

Funny thing about all this I could have made post like "fuck yeah I'm exited" even though it really add nothing to this but people wouldn't complaine about it because it's positive comment.

Ok, so what's your end game here. You want people agreeing with you or what...

You want to express your opinion..your opinion's heard. So?

Ok lets talk constructively about your comment, what WOULD it take to convince you to purchase it?

Have you tried one? Thing is that the moment you put that headset on and try something like DRIVECLUB/Eve or PlayRoom then it gives an experience you won't find on any other console right now. I'm 40 and have been gaming for years and I cannot remember the last time I was so seriously giddy and excited about some new technology. Yeah better graphics are good, but this is a whole new experience. Unlike anything anyone else offered right now to the mainstream console buyers.

This is the only way it should be looked at

I am really glad that Sony is investing more in VR, both in terms of hardware and software.

It won't replace traditional gaming anytime soon, but it's certainly the biggest innovation in gaming since.. well since long time ago :D

I actuall played a demo on EBgames few years back when it first came out. I admit it has neat tech but $400 I don't think it's worth it. This why I mentioned Switch because I think it around same price. Switch has more games I'm excite about that justifies that price. If PSVR were little cheaper I'm willing to buy it as of now it just doesn't seem worth it.

what end game!!? When new game gets announced and someone post it in Noegaf people will post their opinion about it. What would be my end game if just post something like "I'm excited"!!?

It only came out last October.

The fan on my processor unit started getting noisy so I returned it for a full refund.

I wonder if this one has replaceable lenses or lense guards for glasses wearers.

I disagree, but this is all subjective. The Switch lineup is ok, but nothing breathtaking. Imo both the Switch and PSVR are not worth it. But this is a typical early adopter problem. The software outlook for the Switch looks better, but VR gaming is just something completly different.

I think the fact that they're upgrading the PSVR base model is a good sign for the future of VR on Sony platforms, and this has me excited about the future. I still have not yet tried VR, I'm still considering whether to get PSVR or Vive, and waiting for prices to come down. I probably should just wait until 'Gen 2' to be honest at this point.

So? Around the time it came out EBgames near me put playable demo and tried it.

Few generally means a small plurality. A few years ago would mean at the earliest 2015.
It came out last October with retail demo units a couple months before that.
So both of those contradict each other.

I would say iPhone 7 -> iPhone 8 beta test is more expensive.
The iPhone 8 is actually the iPhone 7S. The true iPhone 8 is the X. Apple pulled a fast one on their users again.

Isn't there a GAF member who manufactures spacers/lens protectors for glasses wearers?

Actually in my Ebgames after PSVR came out we still had some playable demo. I remember correctly it was same with PSVita.

That I agree, this why I haven't still bough Switch yet. I'm still waiting to see if the new SMT is Switch exclusive or not

Yep, this is how I'm viewing this announcement as well. This signals that they are at least semi-confident in the product going forward, and hopefully it's a good sign towards the existence of new motion controllers and especially a PSVR2 on PS5 as well.

Good news all around.

Great news for PSVR - shows that Sony is committed to the platform.

Not so great news for early adopters like me though - would have been nice for Sony to offer a solution for the HDR issue on gen1 units.

I'm very unhappy that they went out of their way to make the new box incompatible with the old headset.
Not sure what my options are now. I just bought the thing a couple of months ago, too -.-

Fixing it so fast also shows that it was no design choice, available hardware limitation or whatever but simply a big fuckup by them.

But maybe this means they would have to qualms over fixing the PS4pro sooner than anyone would expect (4K Blu-ray, better CPU and hopefully include the HDR-capable VR box in the first place :p ).

Warnen

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Well at least this one works with PS4 pro, to bad over a year late and soured me on VR totally

All I want is a reasonable trade in option for upgrading to the HDR breakout box, even one with a nominal fee.

The effort to plug/unplug cables means I use PSVR only sparingly due to the effort and pain of getting behind the console. HDR passthrough would seriously increase my 'on a whim' PSVR time. As is right now I have to plan a PSVR session before I go through the hassle

Note: I realize of course I'm going to be SOL with my desire for a trade in offer.

Note 2: I tried multiple switch configurations proposed on GAF to get 1 HDR and 1 PSVR connection going at the same time and none of them would ever reliably work with my TV / receiver combo.

Edit:
I missed this from the FAQ: If I already own a PS VR, can I swap out my old Processor Unit with the updated one?
Because the cables of CUH-ZVR1 and CUH-ZVR2 are different, you cannot swap the Processor Units.

That is disappointing ...

There is. I don't understand why similar isn't built into unit from the factory.

It is and I can't believe that is your point. The way you play is totally different. It's like saying a car and a motorcycle are the same cause they both take you places.
