Regarding F-zero, I've never played the first one - what are the game mechanics and controls?

There are no attacks, no. And turning sharp is best done by using L and R and either easing off the gas or hammering the gas like in Maximum Velocity. Brakes are worthless.

I searched every review of the SNES Mini for a lag comparison between a raspberry pi 3 with Recalbox or Retropie versus the SNES Mini. Some people say that the raspberry pi introduces several frames of delay during play. Is this really the truth?
Can't speak for the Pi but the SNES Classic Mini is very responsive.
I've played through Mega Man VII this year on PC using Retroarch with accurate bsnes core and although it played very well I instantly noticed that Mega Man X on SNES Classic feels more responsive.
I honestly can't feel any input lag (maybe if I had a genuine SNES with a CRT for comparison it'd be different).

Done for the night with tinkering, need to settle down.

Got Working
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, Harvest Moon, Pilotwings, Soul Blazer, Doom, Treasure of the Rudras, SimCity, Mega Man X2, Mega Man X3.

Couldn't Get Working
Uniracers, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia.

Very cool. So excited to start adding games to this later on.

SNES Mini is definitely more quick on the trigger than the Pi I think.

I had both, but under a different TVs, unfortunately my Pi is out of my reach so I cannot do any testing atm. However I was very satisfied with the SNES Mini with my "SMW Mario Jump'' delay test on my LG B6.

Yeah, it seriously makes me miss the controls of future games, mainly the drifting. & I say this as someone whose first (or 2nd) Mario Kart was the SNES one. I imagine battle mode might still be fun for a laugh.

I tried the jump drift thing for the first time in OG mario kart after having learned how in future games and I do feel it kinda does something but it could be just my imagination.

Got my 8/25 WalMart preorder in about two hours ago. Played a little bit of StarFox, Super Punch-Out, Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero and LttP.

So much nostalgia overflowing in me. I never bought F-Zero, but I remember my local Pizza Hut having a SNES kiosk or whatever with Super Mario World and F-Zero.

This is kinda making me want to purchase some Pizza Hut for the first time in awhile and really feel the nostalgia.

These better get sorted, because I need my Quintet Holy Trilogy.

The parts you jump on. Very simple obviously. Not on par with the likes of Yoshi's Island or anything.

Those are not polygons. On this very same level, you can also see the same effect, but with spikes. I've seen that 'effect' before on NES and Genesis games lots of times too. So it's definitely something that can be done easily without the need of polygons.

I used an emulator and disabled all layers one by one, and the spikes and those steps you mentioned are in the Sprite layer (same layer as the character and enemies), which means they are not polygons or else they would be on their own layer. It's the same where there are big mode 7 effects. In the previous room where those steps are, there is a switch that rotates the entire screen. If you disable one of the background layers, the entire background disappears instead of being removed in segments like normal backgrounds. The reason is because the background is one huge bitmap the game uses to rotate.

Just to be 100% sure, I played Star Fox and disabled layers one by one, and everything that are polygons are exclusively on their own layer. So you pretty much only see the background bitmap when you disable the layer with polygons. Same thing with Yoshi's Island. Everything that is a polygon is in their own exclusive layer. Things that might look like they were done with polygons, such as rotating sprites or even the vehicle transformations are simply sprites being manipulated by either Mode 7 or the SFX chip, but they aren't polygons.

If this is something you've thought your whole life about Mystical Ninja, then it's going to be near impossible to accept the fact that those steps are regular sprites and not polygons. Sorry :(

My delivery of the SNES mini was meant to be today, yet for some reason the courier didn't "scan" the package in on time which meant that despite somebody waiting at home all-day for it so as to receive the order, it's now been put back to tomorrow, but even then until you get the dam console in your hands, you don't know what to think......on top of how much hassle it was to get in the first place...then having to revert to e-bay!

I received my UK unit and it's amazing, but there is no audio output from my monitor. I bought an HDMI to VGA adapter with audio, but the system doesn't recognize it!!! :(

I have to get sound on this thing...

Robin, did you use the NTSC patch on Terranigma? If not, try to. If so, try not to.

Yep tried both. Tenchi Souzou, Illusion of Gaia, and Illusion of Time all have the same problem.

The exception is Soul Blazer which works fine. Someone earlier said this series had a form of copy protection in, aside from Soul Blazer, so it makes a kind of sense here with what I’m experiencing.

Regarding F-zero, I've never played the first one - what are the game mechanics and controls?

I gather B is accelerate, A is boost (of which you get one per lap), Y is....brake? and X is also brake?

L/R are bank tighter for those respective turns? OR do they do nothing? and no attacks that I'm aware of?

Only played the later F-zeros.

You have to use the L/R for tight turns but take your finger off the accelerater when doing it. You can keep reasonable speed up though by tapping the accerator rapidly. There are no attacks or anything like that. It's pure racing. Also make sure to use the boost in specific areas to maximise your lap times (over gravel areas for example).

Some F-Zero gameplay.

Also, does anything feel like the D-pad sucks? For me, when I'm holding down, down-left or down-right registers and it messes me up. I seem to screw up a lot in F-Zero when jumping off the ramps. Then out of no where, my racer goes off the track and explodes... its pretty frustrating 😡

While I wouldn't say sucks, it was definitely a step down from the XBox One-S D-pad. Makes me wonder if they changed something from the original controllers, as they are supposed to have some of the best D-pads.

Is anyone else still waiting for their 8/22 Walmart order? Mine still says delivery this Friday but has no tracking number

Online, it still says "Preparing order" & "Arrives by Wed, October 4". I got the backorder email yesterday though. I'm an 8/22 order too.

Seems like the earlier u ordered, the worse off u were as far as Walmart was concerned.

Wave 1: Canceled
Wave 2: Backordered
Wave 3: Shipped and received this week.

So wacky.
Didn't they have 2 listings up for it at the same time as well?
How does stuff like that even happen?
(Apart from its a humongous retailer that probably could care less/can't keep real track of what it's selling)

One thing that's really caught me by surprise is how well some of these older titles perform. Star Fox/2, G&G, etc. obviously have some framerate issues, but games like Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, etc. are all such a joy to play thanks to their smooth framerates and snappy controls. I don't know why I always equated older 16-bit games with lower framerates.

Nothing changed, they're just stiffer because they're new. Break them in a bit and you'll recognize it once again as the greatest D-pad ever.

So far I've beat Mega Man X 100%, Super Mario World 77 exits, and Zelda-all but 3 heart pieces. Unsure of doing DKC or smrpg next... I'm still in awe of how much I've missed these gems.

On the flip side my 5 year old daughter beat me in MVCi just spamming buttons and laughing like a maniac.

My younger brother's friend would always beat me in War Gods (N64) by just mashing buttons. It was infuriating, but I could never figure out how to get around it.

Before you ask, I don't know why we were playing War Gods in the first place.

My Amazon UK order got in today! Played some SMW earlier and I was like wtf is this horrendous input lag until I realized I forgot to set my KS8000 into Game mode. Made me realize how unforgiving these games are with the lag you get from modern HDTVs.

I ordered from Walmart on Aug 22nd and it says it'll be delivered tomorrow Oct. 5th but it hasn't even shipped yet. I got charged though but still preparing order. Sigh

Fell asleep in my Lovesac last night (which I move to right in front of my TV, damn cable length) while playing FFIV. It was nice being so cozy and sleepy but I'm mad that my playtime is going to be massively off.
