So we have no idea when they’ll be back in stores? I want one but it’s annoying to think they’ll probably show up in stores and be sold out by the time I even hear they were restocked.

Looks like mine is arriving on Monday, bought from Amazon UK to Sweden. The swedish prices for this are just ridiculous, we’re talking basically double the price. Thank lord I managed to snag a pre-order.

So I got a pair of the Hori Fighting Commander controllers at Gamestop. I ignored the early reviews.

Everything about it is nice except for the d-pad. It's just fucking awful. I mean, I thought this was going to at least be about as good as the 8bitdo - which is mostly reliable, just moderately flaky on the diagonals.

Nope.

You have to press EXTREMELY hard to get diagonals. I was constantly jumping straight up in SF2 like I had a bad joystick in the arcade, instead of up-forward or up-back. To be sure it wasn't just SF (I occasionally miss a diagonal on the stock SNES controller too), I tried Secret of Mana. Couldn't reliably walk diagonally back and forth. Couldn't reliably walk in a circle around some grass at the beginning of the game. Flip back to OEM, 800% better.

Just awful.

Really expected better given the reputation of the fighting commander controllers for the other platforms. Too bad.

It was about on par with an xbox 360 dpad. Yuck.

It's going back to gamestop. Here's hoping the new 8bitdo SN30 has a better dpad than the older models did.

This is tangentially related: do new Emio NES Classic joysticks still come packed with a compatibility adapter or is that functionality now built in? I was thinking of buying the joystick and getting the adapter to see if it would work on making my Hori Wii arcade stick work on the SNES Mini for SFII'Turbo.

Can't believe I got in on that... I wasn't following when the launch day was in Japan.

I was out when I got the notification today just like I was out when the preorder went up for it the first time. The first thought in my head was "are you fucking kidding me? I'm going to get screwed on this twice?" since it feels like such a chore to order in Japanese on a mobile phone where as I was completely on top of it when the US and Euro versions went up. Fortunately, I was able to get an order in before it went out of stock, but there was old CC info on my Japanese account and I used the wrong card since it defaulted to that. I switched it like 5 minutes later so I hope I didn't get screwed.

Just completely dumb luck to have been out both times and in both instances; I would have normally been at a regular computer in both instances but something happened that caused me to be out. Man, I hope this goes through....

I'm sure it goes through for you. If not, there will be more shipments for the Japanese version no doubt.

Just a heads up if you don't know, Amazon.co.jp has an English mode. I can read Japanese but in those panicked moments where you're racing against a thousand geeks... I'd rather be in my native tongue.

You're really getting all 3 regions? And I thought I was going overboard getting NA+JP ;)

I dipped my toe into Mario RPG the other day, and promptly got my ass kicked by the purple raptor in the top hat. I only have about 3 moves to use at the moment so does anyone have any useful advice for this game?

I've missed both, got no alterts. I've staked Amazon JP for days too, and missed the 15 minute window fuuuuu

It's so much cheaper on Amazon too, on ebay they're US$150, and even more on Play-asia etc.

I guess I'll just be patient since it seems there is plenty of stock worldwide...

Don't check Solaris Japan >_> $182 USD

In their defence they said they were at the mercy of third party suppliers.

Learn the timing to defend correctly and how to attack harder. If you have enough healing items you should endure the boss to the end.

This game is extremely easy and has a level 30 cap, so you really don't ever need to grind.

Best part about the game. Can't stand grinding...ok, maybe a little bit of grinding is acceptable. But shit is boring. Thank goodness there isn't too much grinding in Chrono Trigger either.

A good early challenge for Chrono Trigger, in relation to levelling, is seeing Spekkio in his Prehistoric Frog form. It's all about getting to the End of Time fighting as few battles as possible, as you need to be level 9 or under to see it. Can make some bosses quite tough, and you need to be clever in sections like the prison to avoid getting exp.

Grinding is the stupidest thing ever put in games. It’s the most infantile reward system to be given more power simply for repeating the same thing over and over.

Like in real life when people work out and get stronger? Or when practicing a skill makes you better at that thing? ;)

Though yes, in games, grinding is dull. It's why when I play older Pokemon games now I pkhex myself in a load of Rare Candies, so I can bring new Pokemon up to the levels my main guys already are easily enough. (EVs be damned for solo play)

Wait, what? What is this? Explain a bit better.

So it seems I got an EU SNES mini for free....

Preordered on amazon.de. Cancelled preordee on the 28th. Found it sitting on my porch at 3am after a trip to the store just nlw. No charge on my CC, no order in order history on amazon.de. Yet here it sits.

Now I have one of each, yay! Maybe amazon's shipping issues caused this one to slip through the cracks? Though I thought their issues were mostly in the US. I cancelled because I got off work and was camping out for a US one (screw the haters, my childhood is purple man!), but I'll gladly take a free one. It will likely be gifted to my niece. Just hope she appreciates it as she is 13.

So as someone who didn't have a SNES back in the day (only much later and with a small selection of games) I am enjoying many games for the first time or at least in the best version, Europe really wins a lot with 60hz.

Been playing the whole weekend and when I could find time during the week.
- Almost finished with my Super Mario World playthrough (only the special stages still missing). That one I actually have on real hardware and GBA, too, and 100% finished it several times. But it is still good enough to replay again and again (even if my heart belongs to Mario Bros 3)
- Trying hard to get good at Mario Kart, my favorite racing series yet I've never played the original before apart from short sessions at friends two decades ago. On 150cc, it is quite punishing and I struggle to even get into the top 4. Fun game, but I am waiting for it to really click so I can play it more easily (I still don't completely get drifting.. playing Luigi btw.)
- Star Fox. Loved 64 and Zero, never before played the OG... and after getting used to the framerate and the graphics, it actually holds up well with good level design and boss encounters. And an amazing soundtrack. Finished it on Level 1&2, now 3 is a real jump in difficulty but it never felt unfair so far.
- Final Fantasy 3. I've played it on GBA but never actually finished it for unknown reasons. It's... charming. The story feels a bit clumsy nowadays, but I enjoy the characters and atmosphere. Soundtrack and graphics hold up really nice (especially the OST compared to the GBA port), and I totally forgot how different many of the characters in your party feel to play. Might see it through this time.

I also casually started up F-Zero and Castlevania IV since I own both of them on original hardware... and both are great and profit from 60hz. I've booted up most of the other games shortly to check them out, but I really think I will try to finish some games first before getting into more of them. Especially the action adventures and RPGs will take many autumn/winter evenings to beat - and I already tried Mario Kart in 2 player mode with my flatmate and hope she's down for Secret of Mana since I never played that in multiplayer before (we plan to play Zelda 3 soon, at least). Some notable games which are completely new to me are Contra 3, Super Mario RPG and Kirby's Dream Course

I also don't think I need anything else gaming related for the rest of the year apart from Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2, I'm set for a while with this little device. Last year and early this summer, I played the NES mini a lot (that was my childhood console) and I really wish that Nintendo continues down this road with self-contained mini consoles (though I'd love if you could download classic games from eshop on Switch at some point and use them on both Switch and mini consoles).

Guys, restocks, order status blabbering goes elsewhere:

I've reopened the preorder shitshow thread for people to talk about their preorder stuff again, to allow this thread to be more about the unit and the games included as intended.

So please post order stuff here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1409607

I'm having that problem with Star Fox 2, which is god awful.

The OT has a crapton of info, beginners guides, manuals, tips, explanations linked for you to dive into. There's no excuse.

Anoregon

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
Well, people were commenting about how they added games, so thought I'd ask.

It's currently possible to add games but not in the easy, fool-proof way it is for the NES (IE, the hackchi program.) I imagine once the version of Hackchi comes out that is fully compatible with the SNES, the thread title will change.

Any news/time line on adding mods? Really want chrono trigger and final fantasy II on mine.

I have no real idea, but I'd be surprised if it took more than another few days.

Yeah, I think the thread title needs to be changed.

Lots of progress is being made on a daily basis and people are just hungry for more info on it.

I agree. and I'm not dismissing any RPGs which has grinding. Honestly, the amount of depth and story development in RPGs is outstanding, but when you force a player to literally repeat fights/tasks just for the sake of leveling up in order to proceed with the story then that's some bullshit I tell ya what.

If this thread is closing soon, I guess I’ll ask out of curiosity: is there an ETA for the mod to come out? Did the NES mod come with a launch window or did it just stealth drop?

And once it does drop, would it be prudent to wait first to see if it potentially bricks the system (let others be the first to test it out, basically)?

Posted this on the wrong thread:

FFVI: Does the save state Veldt trick not work with the SNES Classic save states?

For those who don't know, if you save state before a battle from a pack that has a monster you want, and when you fight you don't get that monster, you can load save state and fight a battle off the Veldt and the next Veldt battle will be another one from that same pack.

Doesn't seem to be working, and in general the Veldt RNG is a bit weird if I do anything with saves/loads (when you reset the game it's supposed to jump 13 packs up, doesn't always happen?).

I asked this on GFAQs and someone said the RNG in this is different from the regular game :0

literally that same question was asked five posts above yours.

Just keep an eye on reddit, it's the best place for updates.

And it's always prudent to let others test the waters in my opinion, let them test the compatibility and iron out any issues so you don't have to keep repeating the hack or risk your machine.

Got mine yesterday from a preorder from Dreamland Belgium.

I actually purchased it for a friend as he really wanted it and he wanted a NES as well but he isnt a big gamer and doesnt follow the news so no way he would have been able to get one.

Its a shame Nintendo proceeded like that.

Hopefully the restocks will allow everyone to get one.

Been playing through the games and I really appreciate the improvements to the interface over the NES Classic. The selectable borders are nice and the scaling and CRT filter on the SNES Classic are hugely improved. I actually like the CRT setting on this and use it for most of the games. When they re-release the NES classic next year I know they won't add any games (that would piss people off) but it would be nice if they updated the software to add the new scaling and filter settings as well as the borders.

Only two complaints. First, it would be nice if you could set borders on a per-game basis. Some borders are more suitable to some games than others due to theme or color scheme. Second, I just don't "get" Kirby's Dream Course. I understand the mechanics but I just do not find it fun to play in the slightest. I like golf and mini-golf, and I'm okay with Kirby, but this game just doesn't work for me on any level. I hate the perspective and it just feels clunky to play.

The game is identical to the 1.1 version rom, but the emulation isn't 100% accurate to a real snes.

Play with a friend or spouse. The fun is in the competition.

Been said, but just treat it as a multiplayer game only. If you don't have anyone else to play against, you can safely ignore it altogether.

I freaking love Kirby's Dream Course. There's almost always a way to get a hole in one in the earlier levels if you can figure it out. Each level's like a little isometric puzzle. It kind of remind's me of Breath of the Wild's shrines.

I find Dream Course and Star Fox 2 to be the worst of the bunch. Just absolute garbage in my opinion, and I hate that they're taking up two spots. While I hate SF2, I get it being there since it was never released and that's kind of cool, but Dream Course has no place on this thing. It was shit when it came out, and it's shit now 😡

I'm confident someone will figure it out, especially once the Hakchi tool is updated and tinkering becomes easier.

Honestly, we're still struggling. And the solution is external to hakchi, too, so even when that's out and released, if Terranigma and IoG aren't solved, hakchi won't be doing anything with them.

Not being able to get Terranigma or Illusion of Gaia on here makes me very sad.

If the matter is truly the anti-piracy measures of those two games, it should actually be a pretty simple fix. There were definitely patches to fix these on copiers back in the day, so it's about drudging the internet for them, or just simply recreating them.

It could be there is an actual emulation issue, but it doesn't seem super likely since none of the games uses any sort of special hardware.

Robin64

Member
Well the NTSC patch for Terranigma makes it work fine, just without audio. At that point, I think we need to figure out how to do the "external PCM" thing Nintendo did for the games on here. There's a part in the footer where you specify where the external PCM begins, so we just need to get it there, then I'm confident the emulator can handle it. It seems to struggle with the audio being in the ROM as per normal with those games.

(Only Starfox and Yoshi's Island don't use the external PCM thing)

((Additionally, this is why some audio sounds odd. If you replace the SNES Mini's Super Mario World with your own converted one, for example, it sounds better))
