PUBG is now the biggest game on Steam in history | over 2m CCU, beats Dota 2 peak

No offense but I could just as easily say the type of game you're implying is GOTY material has low appeal outside a very specific crowd.

PUBG appeals to a massive audience. It wouldn't be constantly setting new sales and player count records if that wasn't the case.

Yeah, you're right. Another example is Bayonetta 2.
The only criteria should be the release year and FUN.

That said, PUBG is again a gritty/ugly shooter, and that would disappoint me if it won GAF's GOTY as it's not a very, let's say, elegantly designed game. But that's just my personal preferences for a GOTY.

PUBG gritty? Ugly maybe, but the game is so over the top with ridiculous moments I don't know how you could classify it as gritty.

I'm not sure if you are just talking about art, but PUBG is brilliantly designed. In a game where you can go 10+ minutes without seeing someone only to get shot in the back, it keeps millions of people coming back for more. It is an extremely well paced and balanced game.

Apparently I have the wrong definition for gritty. English isn't my first language.
Let's say militaristic/brownish/grayish with a realistic look.

Well if you're talking aesthetics wise I'd still disagree. It's actually quite colorful, but yes it does have a realistic look.

I've never felt more under a rock in my gaming life than right now... I generally ignore gaming trends, but every time I turn around anymore I see people commenting on this game, or see records broken by this game... Reading up on some basic stuff on it and I'm starting to understand WHY.

I don't have the time to get drawn into a time sucking game like this though... still, anyone got any recommendations for some good LPers (actual LPs, with editing and humor, not just pros being pros) of this?

PUBG is great because it's not the type of game where you have to play for hrs. You can do 1 game and get off or you can do 10 games and stay on for hrs. Timthetatman, Shroud, DrDisrepect are three big streamers. Shroud is more a skill based streamer, Tim and Doc blend skill with entertainment.

Yeah, so basically just China getting on this train.

China, a region/country where many gamers don't have a clue on its impact on PC gaming.
You almost sound like your discounting this success by saying "Yeah well a lot of it is Asia so you know..."

Reminds me of League whenever the numbers for it are brought up.

I wonder what's Destiny 2 number by today. Is it still growing or starting to plummeting?

They boasted their 1,2 million concurrent users the other week.

They're past the initial post-release window where they're still rolling out content (like the raid) so it's guaranteed going down steadily at this point.

Such a huge success, really impressive. Can't wait to get a chance to play it. I remember hearing something about a bunch of accounts being made just to farm items. Is that really a significant amount or just the tiniest fraction of their player count?

PUBG has definitely reached the numbers were publishers would think about developing their own launcher. That said It is more likely IMO that Bluehole would try to renegotiate with Steam because they use so many features of the platform.

Something blowing up in a short amount of time is exactly what a fad is. The only way you'll be able to argue that it isn't a fad is if it's still going this strong a year from now.

By that logic, every game that has less users a year from launch was a fad. :p

I was told(in the last or the thread before about PUBG) that there was a lot of salt when dota and lol were getting big.

I wonder if it was for the same reasons, whatever those might be. Having finally tried the game it doesn't scratch the same competitive itch Dota does for me but the passion for the game seems intense enough that I wonder if they could work out a competitive-mode and see how it does esports-wise. They have the playerbase and (unlike Overwatch) they have the viewership. We may have seen nothing yet.

I love the smell of salt in the morning.

Congrats, Bluehole.

It's always fascinating to see those comments, this game is stomping on everything and will continue to climb and break dreams, it's definitely GOTY.

unless something comes out of no where and randomly surprises everyone.

As a general rule, any opinion about gaming that includes the word "fad" is useless unless very carefully justified otherwise. Gamers have a very poor understanding of the dynamics behind product success and the userbase curves for different types of games to begin with, and regularly attempt to overread negative scenarios into the facts out of an emotional investment in seeing something that bothers them for some reason fail. "Fad" in particular is used as a zero-value term that is intended to somehow erase something's success, because by simply asserting it (with no supporting evidence) it's implied that said success is meaningless, the result of arbitrary and whimsical choices by people that have no grounding in reality.

(In the case of something like PUBG with its near-unprecedented level of success this kind of argument is particularly absurd, of course.)

1,645,460 according to Reddit. Servers are melting otherwise it probably would be even higher. Hitting 2 million is only a matter of time.

We got Destiny with 1.2 Million CCU when PUBG was 1.2 Million
We got Fifa with 1.6 Million CCU when Pubg was 1.6 Million

What will be the next? Cod press release with 1.9 Million CCU when Pubg is at 1.9 Million? (Pubg is probably 1.8 or 1.9 at COD launch)

That is great for them. Congrats.

I wont go so far as to say it is GoTY though.

i'm happy for them. it's a huge success. but yeah definitely not GOTY.

this year we've got games like Breath of the Wild, Horizon, Persona 5, Nier: Automata, Destiny 2, Divinity OS2, Cuphead, Hellblade and more which all deserve GOTY more than PUBG and we aren't even done with 2017 yet.

The thing about PUBG is that it's also only on one platform currently.

Salty for WHAT, though? I don't understand how this game's success negatively impacts someone

That their opinion on something they may dislike or not understand is wrong. Yep, there are people out there like that.

But I'd say it's only about 20-30% of them, I honestly think the rest are just messing/meme'ing.
