So are we really gonna go down the path that some stupid ass kid hacker can actually remotely control a billions dollar death machine and fights the other guys with a Jaeger? like... that's gonna be a thing and then the Kaiju will come back and they will reach out to the hacker to help pilot robots that don't have pilots yet and we're all gonna learn a lesson?

This also doesn't have ILM as the primary VFX house anymore.
Double Negative is more than capable, but I think they have a ton of stuff in-house right now and may not be able to devote as much manpower to this one to get all the effects shots at a high level. Especially if the budget is lower.
When ILM did the first one, they already had to overhaul their pipeline in order to make the film at the budget they were given.

Theyre in the Bandai Robot Damashii line and theyre already leagues better than the NECA ones. Theyll have proper articulation since the RD line generally does.
And theres a Gipsy Avenger HG model kit on the left.

This movie looks fucking amazing and I love all the naysayers in here. Some people are absolutely unpleasable.
I hate mecha but enjoyed the first movie just fine. This just looks kind of bad. Like anime bad. What happened to the jaegers being hulking masses with weight behind their attacks? Now they're basically just giant people doing karate. Doesn't help that the full body CG models don't really portray the size these things are supposed to be. The colors and tone seems way different from the first movie as well.

It's impressive how much cheaper and tackier scenes can look just with different lighting. I'm sure 90% of the Power Rangers comments are coming from the fact that most of the action in this trailer is in the daytime (a problem that plagued the only action scene in Power Rangers). It just makes it look...less epic.
The first PR had a bit of a running joke in that every scene was at night in the rain, but at least it had a distinct look.

Even if they can't devote as much manpower, it's a sure thing that the final product will look better than this trailer.
Something feels wrong. I don't even know how to put my finger on it, but the original movie had a soul to it that seems amiss. I doubt there's gonna be moments like Becket springing his Japanese on Mako or the sword reveal. Changes in director and composer to much lower tier doesn't help. Animations look weightless. Ehhhhhhhhhh. Bracing for disappointment.

You can definitely see the drop in budget and worse art direction but I don't mind too much. Looks like a fun watch for $5 Tuesdays.

John Boyega is one of the most charismatic actors out there. If he can't bring some character and heart to this movie, then nobody can.

Mako is in the trailer. Raleigh we don't know atm, but Charlie Hunnam isn't in the film.
AFAIK ILM liked the film so much they actually did it at a discount and were willing to accommodate it heavily. That said I'm okay with how the CGI looks here. The designs and action still looks fantastic. I much prefer the cinematography of the first but I would be a lying bastard if I said this trailer didn't make me feel like I'm ten again.

edit: Oh, the Kaiju are combining? Didn't even recognize that's what's happening, it looks like a new Transformers to me.

Also y'all saying this looks like Transformers... Have any of you guys seen transformers recently? On a good fight it's a barely comprehensible mess, on a bad fight it's a mess of metal with irritatingly long cuts of Shia Lebouff while Optimus and Megatron slug it out off screen.

Doesn't look as stylistically interesting to me in either design or cinematography.
I also miss how lumbering and mechanical the original Jaegers were whereas these are more anime-style in a "let's just motion capture a guy doing fight choreography and overlay a robot on top" kind of way. The cockpits also seem cheaper.
Can't say much for the story or anything of that nature from this.
