GET OUT of your comfort zone

Comfort zones are so easy to fall into, we all do it.

I want this thread to inspire everyone (including myself) to get motivated and accomplish more.

Talk to strangers, put yourself forward at work, give money to those in need, pick up a book if you are not a book reader, even start planning for writing a book, catch up with old friends.

Although the idea is to share plans and results for something you wouldn’t normally do go ahead and share the accomplishments of things you are already actively working on as it could still encourage others.

Eg. I just did over 16,000 steps on my Fitbit (which is the first time reaching that number since owning the device)

Does visiting a thread I didn't make count? This feels strange and uncomfortable though, what will we talk about, I'm not very familiar with the subject.

Nah, I'm out.

Haha, it's meant to feel strange and uncomfortable.
We talk about goals and achievements.

Sorry but I can't endorse meeting new people.
They're all bastards and tend to get in my way whilst i'm out shopping for nibbles and crackers.

The standard person should have one close friend (useful for helping move house to shift couch and other heavy items) and six to seven mild acquaintances for drinking events and arguing with into the wee hours of the morn.
I've tested this so you can absolutely trust me.

But what if I want to stay in my comfort zone rub my nipples and talk about how awesome I am? Seems to work with certain people. If I twist them hard enough, good things will happen!

This is good advice. Im so very far in it. No job, no friends, no life. Sitting inside all day every day. No money, many brain things making it hard for me to socialize. I hope to get out and be more confident brave and social some day. (I also live in a tiny village full of much older people, no one my age)

Everyone needs to pick up some good hobbies and run with it. I meet / know too many people who just sit around watching Netflix and don’t do anything interesting or productive. Sure you got a job / career and you go to school, but what makes you special? Do something with your free time, you’ll learn something and even make something great out of it. I can’t imagine my life now if I didn’t pick up a guitar, join a band, learn sound design and production a decade ago.

I'm outside my comfort zone every day, though from onlookers it would likely appear as I haven't left.

Edit: If there's a comfort zone I'm attempting to leave it's the internet. So much time spent on here.

I would suggest tiny achievable steps in the first instance so that you get a feel for how awesome it feels when you set a goal and achieve it. Simply build from there. The only thing stopping you is yourself.

Don't know if counts, but, recently i've been changing my eating habits considerably to promote a more healthy lifestyle. I still eat some of the stuff i really like from time to time, but now i'm very moderate.

To add, I think this is a matter of focus, making a revolution on yourself overnight will most likely fail, so pick one thing and work that out with small steps if you have to.

I have an issue with being stuck on crowded trains. It may sound crazy but it messes my head up and I cannot breathe. My way to get into a comfort zone is to get off the train and wait for an empty train at a stop I can transfer to.

^ I like what Graven up there is talking about.

I'm pretty good about doing everything and getting out of my zone, the problem is that I'm a master of nothing. So I need to master something, push myself.

you want to get out of your comfort zone? Go get someone pregnant and then you'll have a kid!

Push yourself, you can do it!

You're never ready for it, you can't take it back, and it changes your life forever!

I saw a video last week realizing how little problems can be and how short this is, starting to do more and making sure I'm enjoying every ounce of life. I know life has ups and downs daily with all the general shit that comes with life like work, school, bills and every other problem or stresses. Just step back and remember we all only have one shot at life.

I like the idea of this thread and getting out of your comfort zone is super important, we should all strive to improve ourselves everyday. Never get complacent.

That said, this here is probably the worst advice ever given on NeoGAF.

Having a child is a new adventure every day. Every moment is out of your comfort zone. It's the "out of your comfort zone" that never stops.

I'm being tongue-in-cheek, of course - have a kid when you're ready, or never if that's what suits you. There is some partial truth that it does require jumping off at the deep end a bit. With my kids, I have never been further from my comfort zone.

Really need to do this right now. My life has really gone 180 (in a real bad way) these last couple years. I need to find a way to become more inspired again like I was five years ago.

How about no?

But in all honesty: Yes if it serves a purpose and its something you want then do it and push through.
However, doing something for the sake of doing is nonsense.

Why did it all turn out like this for me? I had so much promise. I was personable, I was bright. Oh, maybe not academically speaking, but... I was perceptive. I always know when someone's uncomfortable at a party. It became very clear to me sitting out there today, that every decision I've ever made, in my entire life, has been wrong. My life is the opposite of everything I want it to be. Every instinct I have, in every of life, be it something to wear, something to eat... It's all been wrong.

I always have tuna on toast. Nothing's ever worked out for me with tuna on toast. I want the complete opposite of on toast. Chicken salad, on rye, untoasted, and a cup of tea...

After some thought I’m going to *try* dedicate some spare time into making a new board game.

I love board games, my wife loves board games and so do my friends.

Here’s hoping I can break the barrier and deliver.

I've been trying this lately. It's hard, and I had a bit of a breakdown last week, but I think i've recovered higher than I started and that's hopeful.

That's awesome, me too! Unless you have to keep the details private, can you share some of what you're thinking about with your game?

I’m still working out the details of the form it will take, will try a few ideas and playtest, if it actually goes somewhere I’ll let you all know about it.

I don't mind getting out of my comfort zone if the circumstance is right. I mean, I've done some pretty bold stuff in before by normal standards I suppose. but yeah, it's all about the situation I guess.

I'm really astonished and at the same time not suprised about many posts here. There's absolutely no reason on earth for any human to be born, go to school, get a job, build a family and then die. Yet 99% of the people are doing this. "Go away. I'm happy with my life and it's awesome!" is the usual response. But asking them about their dreams, big or small, everyone can name many things.

For me, leaving you comfort zone is just another phrase for live the way you really want and make sure to always learn something new and help others, because that goes hand in hand.

Unfortunately most people need some kind of tragic event or whatever, that will shook up their life and at least for some people that is the moment where they really start living. I don't want to sound over-dramatic, but if you are just here to die, then that is sad. If you are here to live a standard life, which 99% of the people do, than that's also a pity and a huge waste of potential. Sadly most people never experience and come to the conclusion, that progress in life means happiness, no matter in which area of your life. If you progress, you will be happy and with it comes so many things. The meaning of life is not something you can search for, it is something you can build.

There are also a lot of people who think motivational talks, videos, music, you name it, are stupid. And everytime these are people stuck in an average life. Not because they had bad luck or someone else put them there. But because of their very own decisions.

I'll leave this video here, because it is one of the better and every now and then someone will need and get some kind of starting motivation, to do the first step for whatever he or she (really) wants.

^ great post. It's sad but true. The old Eat, Pee, and Shit, rinse and repeat until you die.

For so many reasons, we can get caught up in this cycle. For me, I am a prisoner of debt, and living in a city with an enormous cost of living and a career field that forces me to stay.

I think sometimes your parents convince you at an early age to go down the predictable path, only because they care. I think they mean well, but old school parents (like I guess if you're 40 or over) tend to direct you towards a cookie cutter life - a safe and secure life like what they have. My entire life is based off of decisions that I was too young to challenge at the time. I do take some responsibility as well, I could have been more focused.

Whenever I go to Florida, we drive past closed communities after community, strip mall at every corner, the bank, the gas station. It's like a rat maze. Go this way, stop here on the way to work, make this stop on the way to your closed community, and do it again. It's sad.

Well yeah, life isn't easy. Chasing your dreams is more often than not a quick path to epic failure. I'd love to travel around China learning martial arts, but this is real life, not street fighter...

Well, there are dreams and then there are fantasies! Dreams should be attainable if the circumstances are right, fantasies are just wishful thinking or pure luck.

Just on the flip side of that, I've also come to realise that the so-called "predictable" life can be looked down upon as failure.

I find this attitude to also be a bit toxic. "Failure" and "success" is a very personal thing. To say someone's in the life that is typical of modern society is not to assume that it's a failure to attain their "TRUE" potential. Not everyone has nor should have sky-high ambitions.

It's a hard balance to strike with optimism and realism, made more complicated with individual
Mindsets also.

Found a decent new exercise regime - push mower. It’s rain season here at the moment so always plenty of grass and with a pushy it can take 10+ times to cut some areas of the lawn. Will try do it as the sun goes down each afternoon for 30-60mins at a time.

It doesn’t sound crazy at all.

I’m the same and have been for most of my life, and that includes anywhere with crowds or too busy whether it’s a shop, shopping precinct/mall, high street, theme park etc. I’ve even left all my shopping at the checkout in a supermarket before because I felt claustrophobic in the queue and thought I was going to either collapse or have a fit!

You’ll find that you most certainly aren’t the only one to feel like this.

I’m still trying to find time to work on the game but I need time in front of a computer to draw ideas of the game board as I expect I will modify it like crazy after the first attempt, or maybe I should just draw it either way I’m now also going to start writing a novel during my commute to work.

This morning I got the premise for the first two in the series nailed down, want to also have more idea of a third before I commence chapter writing. Main characters are also half written.

Anyone else working on anything? I’m also investigating buying a second house and have scheduled a meeting about it next week.

So anyone else working on anything?

I've pushed the board game idea aside as I can't focus on that and the story.
The story of which is taking up a lot of my waking hours, sometimes I just lie in bed for half the night thinking ideas through as I want everything planned out in advance.

Currently it'll take around 5 novels to tell the entire story.
I've started writing the first chapter of which I've probably only written maybe 1 1/2 pages which I'm still re-working over and over and over.

Anyone else have any side projects on the go?

This is great advice. Sometimes taking risks/outside comfort zone is the only way to achieve your goals, or get true satisfaction out of life. Don't get bogged down into only living life one way, thinking one way, or believing one way. Certainly don't live your life to fit into groups as well. Those can be huge, soul crushing limits.

Challenge yourself and you'll surprise yourself with not only how much fun your having, and that your more fulfilled, but you can take a step back and say;

"Damn. I did it".

Its a great feeling. Start small, work your way up and do it for yourself.

Congrats to everyone in the thread that have already started/done things.

You’ve never watched the Young Guns movies before? They’re some of the best movies of all time.

Step 1 - Go watch Young Guns 1 & 2.
Step 2 - Get out of your comfort zone
Step 3 - ???
Step 4 - Profit
