Are Sony exclusives too samey?

Fuck, really? I've been so indifferent since the Y6 release fell on the same week as its did.

I have always hated God of war but won a copy in a competition and played it and its now my favourite game this generation.

It's really good. So good it converted someone who hated it beforehand.

I take back my comment on the Sony exclusives looking "samey". I just watching the DF video that covered the Sony Press Conference and everything shown looked great and unique. I must have been suffering from E3 fatigue when I initially appraised the Sony conference with a less than positive review. Too much beer, too many bags of Doritos. These things happen.

Naughty Dog games from now on will probably be a bit too... err... "progressive" for my own personal taste but they are leading the industry in terms of third person action games and animation tech. Seriously impressive stuff. I won't be picking up TLoU 2 but damn is that game looking impressive. I think we're at the point where we have superseded the graphical fidelity that we (or at least, I) presumed this generation would have in store for us. Great stuff!

Yes, this is my biggest gripe with them. Really wished they had a battle royal from guerilla or something like that this e3. The uber serious scripted single player action games with a static protagonist are getting old.

Give me something like sea of thieves, state of decay, or at least something unique. Not that those two games are awesome, or sold well, but they are at least different.
I know right , Dreams, WilD, GT Sport, Gravity Rush, all like The Last Of Us and the same / s

Well if you want battle royal games and MP focus games then buy games like Fortnite or Overwatch. Why should sony bother makes those type of game when 3rd party already making for them. I rather see Sony focus on making SP games and base on how much games like God Of War sold I'm not only one.
Tbh, Socom was one of Sony's best franchises back in the days and M.A.G. was awesome and deserves a sequel..

Then again, Zipper got closed, so I don't think there is a Sony-studio up for the job.
Unless Bluepoint could do a remaster.

In my opinion they are too samey. I like Nintendo's breadth of variety when it comes to exclusives. Don't get me wrong, I love sony exclusives but I want to see more variety in tone

I hate the building in fortnite and the hitscan bullets. PUBG is only on xbox, so my only option is h1z1 and it's jank.

Overwatch isn't a BR.

Also an AAA BR would be incredible. Hoping battlefield delivers.

If Sony made a Pac-man game, Pac-man would have lost his parents, a friend would have betrayed him, but then he would have realized that he is the chosen one and then he would start to fight the system, have some troubles and hard times, and eventually, die like a hero saving pac-world, and leaving behind his son, pac-boy, to open the possibility for a sequel.

I would bet my neck on it.

LMAO You think im a fanboy ok Enjoy youre opinion Buddy ;)
The question is here why is ms not successful in Europe ?
Whats the reason that ms is losing in europe every generation
It has to do with the direction they choose with their games
Sony has different games in different genres
Thats right that their games are cinematic and action the reason is that todays gamers like cinematic experiences that is why sony makes cinematic games
The rest of the world pretty much hates the US, and that is more of a factor than anything for why the xbox doesnt sell well in other countries. Even at the height of the 360's popularity, game sales in other countries weren't exactly great, and that was not for a lack of diverse games on the 360 at the time. So your argument is not necessarily fail proof.

So if you cherry pick scenes with trees the games are suddenly the same? Can you find pics with trees from Witcher 3, State of Decay 2, Monster Hunter World, Jurassic World Evolution and Breath of the Wild to show they are also in that group?

Sony is doing exceptionally well comparitively to its competitors

You're not getting the point of this picture, this is the primary output of Sony's first party. Their games mostly share the same design philosophy spun off of each other and thus they lose their identities. A lot of people will say that Sony themselves is providing a ton of variety but when you break things down to their core they're actually the least diverse first party of everyone. They have strong output, they are good games, but they are not risks, they are safe bet third person cinematic experiences which are aesthetically and operationally comparable.

its a good question.... too samey? Well, they certainly have some diverse content... Norse Mythology, Samurai warrior in fuedal Japan, Super Hero game, Post apocolyptic zombie like worlds, Future destroyed world of dinobots, Future world of android living. So on that note no, I find it pretty diverse. HOWEVER.....if you are talking game play structure... man it does feel like all Sony does these days from a 1st party standpoint is 3rd person action settings.

You are missing the point.... Nintendo: Race Cart game, Party game collection, 3rd person sports games, side scrolling platformers, 3rd person RPGs, fighting games...... you say rinse and repeat because of their Iconic characters but their diversity of game types is unparalleled. Sony's efforts of this generation have largely revolved around the 3rd person action game. They have a few outliers but largely its been very formulaic of late. That doesn't mean the games are bad by any stretch btw. For many (myself included), they are more than fine with what Sony is doing.

Report me if I continue to troll
I’ve gained a great deal of respect for Sony’s gaming division(s) over the years. In addition to the cinematic (stupid term) games they takes chances constantly on new IP’s and are willing to fund and release niche titles (Gravity Rush) that they know won’t sell gangbusters (Last Guardian, etc).
They give their studios lots of creative leeway and they results show.
Loved that they released WipeOut and looking forward to MediEvil.
They also have a back catalogue of games that they can resurrect at any time - Syphon Filter, G-Police, Warhawk, damn list can go on forever. So yeah, hope they keep doing what they are doing.
This is what matters. Your words are golden. Sony lets creativity thrive and this is their secret.

I'd say they're a bit samey in terms of art style and genre's seem to overlap a bit but each game definitely has a unique personality. Also, I kind of like that Sony has a distinctive "polish" to their games, almost acts like a Sony seal of quality. Nintendo games have their "look" too.

However, I would like for Sony to make an RPG or something completely different in tone, art style, and genre.

You can make pretty much any game of similar visual style (as in "realistic" or "cartoony" or "anime" etc) look similar by cherrypicking screenshots

Where's the tribal villages of Horizon, or the fields with Mech Dinosaurs, or the tech lairs you discover? Where's the trolls and monsters and giant norse mythological structures of God of War? The urban locations, the african savanna or the ancient temples of Uncharted 4?

Days gone and TLOU look way too similar to each other, I'll give you that. Although gameplay and focus wise they are really different. TLOU is a more linear, cinematic and story heavy game while Days gone is open world and from what I've seen focuses on gaint zombie hordes.

Its funny how people keep bringing up the western first party games and call it samey even when they are still different from each other. When BOTW came out everybody called it the best game ever and that Nintendo games were always different, yet if you called it Zelda Skyrim you'd get buried in hateful replies or outright banned in certain websites. Funny.

They're a bit samey, but I think that's a good thing. When your fans buy a system, they actually like it when you deliver more of the games that made them buy that system. See: Nintendo.

Granted, there are disadvantages if you focus too heavily on one genre or one "look", but since the beginning Sony consoles have been rich with a wide variety of 3rd-party games, offsetting the potential problem.

I'd like it if Sony branched off into more genres, but they do that often enough for my tastes. The true metric to determine whether or not Sony exclusives are "too samey" in the eyes of the market would be to examine sales. Clearly, Sony's games sell well enough to continue the practice.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
No they fucked up from the beginning of the XBOX
They lost every generation and their losing has nothing to do with the e3 reveal

Keep telling yourself that. Just remember that that Xbox One is good for you, cus if Sony had no competition they would scree every customer harder than they do now, since there would be no competitor to make them anti consumer.

Sony is a business and not for pleasuring you. Just like Microsoft or any other corporation.

Haha, gotta admit that's pretty funny and true :) But the quality is there. Can't deny that.

Furthermore, I don't like MP games much - so the best quality SP games which happen to look a tad similar (in perspective, that's pretty much it: I'll take it!

They certainly like their third person action narrative games. Not sure this is an issue as they have diverse settings and varied gameplay, but it is beginning to feel a bit one note overall. I know a lot of people love these types of games, so it makes sense for them to focus on them. It does suck for those of us that would rather see some other types of games get the Sony AAA treatment, but trends like this tend to shift over time anyway. It's certainly better than a slew of first person shooters or battle royals.

I like the formula. Let Sony be Sony and let third party take care of the rest. With that said, if they want to deviate and do something new I would be up for that as well so long as the quality is consistently great.

They probably are going to start to feel very samey once they all release, because there are only so many 3rd person games you can play before they start to overlap on game play elements. In my opinion a much more concerning issue is the gloomy and draining nature of all these games, every game is trying to tell heavy stories, that start to feel less like games in which you have fun, but more so a trail which you follow to the finish line to conclude the story.

Sony clearly standardized the formula for their big AAA games that are meant to have global appeal, which isn't bad, but is not something that will be able to go on for much longer if they don't include some game chancing elements to fresh up the 3rd person experience, after all these are 30 to 40 hour experiences, that have a rather limited replayability compared to games with heavy online components. As much as people love to trash Xbox for Halo and GoW it is something PS should have heavy invested in creating, because those game concentrate on a decent story, but a premium online experience that players can spend 100's and even 1000's of hours playing due to great gameplay mechanics, something that is non existent on the PS right now.

I said this before but I would say let 3rd party handle MP focus games. They much more popular and more people play those games because the multipaltform games. I personally like Sony focusing on SP games and they also have 3rd party console exclusive Japanese games like Persona, Dragon Quest and Yakuza.

Yeah. They're fun and nice to look at, but in the grand scheme none of them are going on my best games ever list. None of the ones that are out anyway. Death Stranding and Spider-Man totally seem like they could. Otherwise they all seem like they're cut from the same cloth.

A camera angle is not a genre though. It's only a camera angle. How many angles are there to makes games in? which one has the most games currently. A racer can assume many camera angles during play. A platformer can be first person, tpp or 2.5D, yet some people say most of Sony's games are TPS. Then VR is a whole other perspective in terms of feel and immersion.....

Yet if we look closer....

FPS
SONY: Killzone, Resistance

MS: Halo

TPS:
SONY: Uncharted, TLOU, Days Gone, Socom, Syphon Filter, The Order 1886

MS: Gears, Recore

TPP
SONY: GOW, Detroit, Until Dawn, TLG/ICO/SOTC, Bloodborne, Concrete Genie, Gravity Rush, Rain, Tearaway, Ape Escape, Hot Shots Golf, MLB the Show, Infamous, Mod Nation and LBP karting, Sly Cooper, Knack, Lost Soul Aside ...

MS: Fable, SOD2

2D/2.5D
SONY: Patapon, SFV (funded), Playstation All Stars, LocoRoco, Pupeteer.

MS: Some Indies.

Then a million VR games and thirdparty exclusives.......you can't find anywhere else

All of these games are different and play differently. MS is not leading Sony in variety in any genre......In the Third Person Perspective, you get anything from shooters to platformers, to adventure games etc etc....Dreams is like it's own genre. Sony has so many different games on the table you even forget some of them, and there are a lot they can revive and no doubt we will see a host of new IP's from WWS next gen irrespective.....Savage Starlight from Naughty is a possibilty. A new IP from Barlog etc.....They're always bringing new things to the table every generation, but XBOX fans are just stoked for the next Forza, Gears and Halo or another subpar Zombie game. The original XBOX did not have the quality games PS2 had, but Allard had the right idea and they had some very nice exclusives.

For an entire console generation output, their games are more than diverse. Just look at LittleBigPlanet, Knack, Dreams, Tearaway, Gravity Rush as straying away from the "over the shoulder" template.

But because they want to set the benchmark/sell third party games, their major AAA games get more attention.

It's open world game with combat, NPC dialog and some puzzles. It is closer to Skyrim than HZD is to Uncharted.

No. The criticism is absurd to me. The thing they most share in common is exceptional quality.
That's about right, great graphics, great polish, great animation, nice sound design, great gameplay, solid framerates....In such respects, they're the same allright.

Sony did have an early start on the online shooter space but failed to capture it. It came with a headset, lobby's, clans, fully leveled so the only differential was skill and map knowledge. A thing called covering vantage points unlike what cry babies call camping..

MAG was fantastic.

As for a studio that could pull off SOCOM again. I say two studios could do it.

1. Naughty Dog's Multiplayer Team. Between what they have done with Uncharted Multiplayer as well as The Last of Us Multiplayer, there is no questions they are the right team for the job
2. Team that developed Spec Ops: The Line.
3. Runner up would be the team behind the Division. Cut the scope of The Division in half and it can be done.

It outsold Zelda on both, DS and 3DS. Animal Crossing on DS and 3DS sold more than any Zelda game ever made, even if you count TP on Wii and GCN as one game and BotW on Switch and Wii U as one game.
You mean it sold better on the handheld platforms that have triple the install base of the GameCube and WiiU?

Which franchise has Nintendo trusted to launch a console with? Zelda or Animal Crossing?

"Break things down to their core."

You're posting pictures of trees and acting as if this is serious criticism. None of those games play in a similar way.

This complaint just looks more and more pathetic. Especially when, and this has to be said, the Xbox does not have a single exclusive coming out this year that have a similar level of critical acclaim.
