Any Switch owners feeling a tad miffed?

It’s exactly this 2nd console syndrome you’d expect them to try and ameliorate by having a steady stream of quality titles and I just find it mind boggling that they are doing this when the dev teams only have one main platform to focus on now and said platform actually has people buying it for a change.

Just such a weird way of doing things but I had a feeling that would be the case from its initial launch video which had loads of middleware providers mixed in with real teams when they were trying to show how much support they had this time round as it didn’t bode well from then.

Got to give it to them for marketing and branding this time round though as it worked well. Hardware isn’t anywhere near their usual standards though in any respect and the software we’ve been over.

Why knows it might be another 3DS style lifecycle with the best coming in after a few years but thus far it seems like a large step back from that handheld and not much of a step up from a Wii U.

Yeah I’m miffed. I can’t play my switch it’s at home at the moment and I am not at home for some time so I can’t play it

It's a by-product of people spending more time thinking about playing than actually playing.

This sums up something I have been thinking for quite a while reading posts here perfectly!

It seems that many are much more into discussing games (especially who has what exclusives, who is lacking said exclusives, etc.) more so than actually playing games these days.

Darkness no more
There hasn't been much out this year that interests me. I'm sure the Switch will get some great games over its lifetime and it's not like it's super expensive. Ive always viewed Nintendo stuff as more of a side console I occasionally play so the drought isn't a huge deal.

The 3DS only started getting a lot of quality releases in its 3rd year. Up until that point it was much worse than the Switch.

I was hoping to see more of a pay off at this E3, given they no longer have 'two pillars' to support. But given the rather paltry line-up, it makes you wonder what they are all working on over there. Hopefully, they are keeping some stuff under wraps until close to launch, would be gutted if what they announced at E3 is honestly all we're getting until Q2 2019.

Not feeling any regret over my purchase, Mario and Zelda on the thing are too good.

The Switch only does half of its job right - it excels as a handheld but absolutely fails as a home console (even the UI is displayed at 720p on TVs lol). Nintendo's decision to make weak hardware (again) has doomed it to be a porthouse for several year old games (but those ports are still sold for $60! What a deal!). Sure, there are a ton of great 2D indies, but that's not what most people bought the console for. Most bought it for Nintendo games and even on that front it's not doing too well (unless you skipped the Wii U).

That said, it's pretty much exactly what I expected from Nintendo... so whatever. I have other consoles to play on while I await the next quality exclusive Switch game.

What? So many NS games are 1080p and would be perfectly fine on a big TV. Hell, my system is 99% docked. I don't care for handheld gaming at all, but the game still look great on the TV. The DOOM port is extremely well done and looks pretty awesome on my TV.

Count me in with the metroid guys ... I have odyessey and botw already and plan to get Mario kart , these are all great games but I do feel a bit shafted . If i didnt have other platforms to play that feeling would 've been exacerbated

Why weak hardware upsets me is because it's holding back the other two consoles. We just got passed last gen holding back the PS4 and X1, and then the switch was released to extend that torment. Nintendo needs to relaize that little tidbit. And don't act like it's not happening because if a dev is gonna make a game for all 3 consoles, it's going to to have to work on the weakest of them all, and they tend to make a one-size fits all version.

Name one single game on PS4 and Xbox that was cut back on those machines to work on switch.

The reality is games are made for sony and Ms first THEN ported to switch.

I feel the complete opposite. I've loved: BoTW, MK8, Splatoon 2, Odyssey, Overcooked, Shovel Knight, Rocket League recently Fortnite. Tomorrow i'll be picking up Mario Tennis Aces, can't wait for Mario Party, Dark Souls and Smash later this year.

The switch has easily exceeded my expectations, couldn't be less miffed!

I'm playing The Lost Child on the switch rn before that it was FE and 120+hours on XC2. I'm ok/set until July.

Not miffed--it's fine, but so far the promise of combined portable + console game development hasn't materialized. So far at least, in terms of first party output, it just feels similar to any of their recent consoles to me.

Why be a switch only gamer? Xbox’s and PS4s aren’t that expensive, seems bizzare that people would pay £280 for a switch but not under £200 for one of the other consoles

I think switch was bought out relatively early in the cycle, they’ll be a lull and then a glut of Nintendo games I’m sure

I purchased a Switch when Odyssey came out. With it I also got Legend of Zelda and Mario Kart. I beat Odyssey then shortly after I finished LoZ, haven’t touched my Switch since then. It’s dusty and been almost 2 months since I turned it on and it looks to continue to be that way.

I will be picking up Mario Party and Smash Bros. Ultimate, so it won’t be long until I dust it off and play it regularly again, but so far I feel like I wasted my money on it. I use my PS4 and Xbox One almost daily.

with each game sold individually. Maybe $40.
If they'll remaster them a bit like they did with The Wind Waker HD by adding new lighting system (for example and amongst other things), i'm honestly okay with that. Plus... who on earth does not want Prime Trilogy in 1080p 60 for 40$ (each game)? I guess you can go emulation rout and play in 4K 60 but can you play these games on the go that way?

I think better this that than to keep these games hostage to ancient systems. More people needs to play these games and especialy new generation which is growing and playing absolute shit like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Wildlands etc.

I'm not mad or anything...cause it's what I've come to expect from Nintendo. There are a lot of releases on other platforms I'm looking forward to, and I'm of course getting Octopath Traveler even though my hype level isn't as high as it seems to be for other people. I've played the Bravely Default games so I'm tempering my expectations, but I like what I've seen so far, with it being a more mature take on things and all. That said, a weak showing from Nintendo will give me time to fit in Dragon Quest XI and Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (not that I wasn't going to fit them regardless), and it'll allow me to replay the KH games in time for KH3 while catching up on some of my backlog. I can't complain.

Though, if you thought Nintendo would operate differently than they have since the N64 era, with an amazing onslaught of games similar to last years release schedule, for the entire life span of the Switch, then I can see why you'd be miffed. From a personal standpoint, I would've liked at least some ports like Xenoblade X, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and maybe even an HD remaster of Skyward Sword, and they aren't even doing that (as far as I know, they can always do a Direct later in the year and reveal some more surprises).

Sadly, this is par the course for Nintendo in any year with Smash. Typically, you can't expect any other major titles from them, because they rely heavily on that series to carry the year, and it usually does. That's how it seems anyways. and it does nothing for me though since I don't care for Smash anymore outside of seeing new character reveals. It's pretty much a dead year from Nintendo for me, or it would be without Ocotopath(Thanks, SE). Feels like I own a Nintendo system.

It's not even a good indie platform like the Vita was. The D-pad and its position are trash. Axiom Verge was murder on my fingers. I ended up pre-ordering the PS4 version of Sonic Mania Plus instead of the Switch version, and I'm waiting for the PS4 version of Hollow Knight too because the controls are so fucking bad.

I'd much, much rather play side-scrollers on a handheld but playing the games is physically uncomfortable.

As a Switch owner, I'm not exactly miffed. I happen to own other platforms and have a backlog of great games to play.

However, I will never have confidence in Nintendo's platforms until they solve their 3rd party problem. As much as they trumpet their range of partners and 'special relationships', these partners are still not showing significant commitment to Nintendo beyond minimum-risk efforts. There are some exceptions, but not that many. That's my barometer for Switch.

I can't fault their launch momentum. These generations are a marathon and not a sprint, so maintaining that momentum matters. The sheer volume of ports announced by Nintendo isn't something I care for at all. I happen to own a Wii U, for example. I buy new machines to play new games. However you present it, whether you say "It's giving a Wii U game a chance it deserves" or "Game X would also be perfect on Switch", a port is not a new game.

If the market rewards this approach, I don't see why Nintendo would be motivated to change course. I think that would be a shame. Nintendo should be doing more than they are.

That said, a couple of things:

- If the machine is everyone's 'secondary console' then it's likely to end up in more homes than a primary console. That's still good news for Nintendo.
- There are so many great games around today I really can't complain or justify some "No gamez" rhetoric at the hobby.

Had very high hopes heading into e3. To say I'm peeved after that abomination of a Direct is an understatement. Even Nintendo's big hitters (all two of them) are of no interest whatsoever to me. It's pretty much Wii/WiiU time imo.If it wasn't for BOTW I'd have never bought mine.

If Nintendo can't get their act together for 2019 they can fuck off (again).

Yeh I think i agree with you OP. I felt like I was lured into buying a Switch because of BotW and MarioO. But now there's very little else I want to play on it - if anything tbh.

I feel I have to wait now for the core Pokemon rpg, wait for Metroid, wait for animal crossing and pray for a second Zelda, pray for a second Mario, pray for another Luigi's mansion, pray for an actual new Mario kart, pray for an actual new cpt toadstool... the list goes in really.

I'm hoping in a year or so's time ny gaming needs will be satiated. But right now, the Switch feels like a second kick in nuts after the nut kicking of WiiU. :(

Edit. Forgot to wait for the Yoshi game (where the fuck is is?!?).

And forgot that I'm not paying £50 for a Kirby game.

They are giving us Smash Bros. sooner than I thought they would so I don't care.

I bought my Switch at launch from the big hitters, Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Metroid. So far, I have all but Metroid. I'm good.

I traded in a bunch of stuff to where I basically got my Switch for free a week ago. I'm loving it. Loving Mario+Rabbids, Mario Kart & Hyrule Warriors. Stoked for Octopath!

I am. I don't understand the Nintendo fanboy that defends this system. It *is* a good console but the games are just ports. Nintendo is acting like they're on launch release with trickled down games for the next several months. Mario Tennis is the first thing I've been interested in since Mario Odyssey as everything else that Nintendo fans get overly excited about is on my other systems, and some of those have been forever ago (Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac).

So far, I have around 5 games on the system total and I've had mind since the first 3 months of release. I can only name a handful of games coming out that I want. I'm not buying any Wii U ports since I have a good PC and can just emulate my Wii U games at higher quality than the Switch is able.

Maybe Smash and Pokemon will get me to dust this thing off once in a while.

I’ve been calling it my Nintendo Swiffer, after its ability to collect dust.

Despite all the bad press the Wii U got, and it’s early abandonment, I never felt as underwhelmed by it, as I do by this machine.

It’s got a *ton* of potential, but I’m in the same boat as you OP, disappointed.

Never buy promises. Buy a console once it has enough games to satisfy the initial purchase. If that's launch day, fine. But it might mean buying it many years after launch or never at all.

I just got one and only have Zelda, Mario Kart and Splatoon 2 and am now looking through the store and seee nothing but strange games I have never heard of or ports of games I already have. What do Switch only gamers play?

ARMS is fantastic.

Yea, this year atm kinda feels like Wii U's final 18 months- Prob should try that downloaded octopath demo but more triple A was to be expected concidering how hard they cut down on releases 2 years ago (spoiler just like 1 game on wii u).
Xenoblade 2 was great, and prob getting that dlc once it drops, but 1 game (kirby was not as good as the 3ds titles, higher price, no 3d and 30 fps) for the first 6 months makes me believe the staff cut off a couple of years back are starting to really show now.

Is this true? It shines a whole new light on the "all teams will be developing for one system! NO MORE DROUGHTS!!!!" thing if they fired a load of their staff and only have one console's worth of output at maximum now.

Purely a secondary system from a company known to have sparse 3rd party support. In other words, it has lived up to the low expectations I had.

The Switch is doing great for me. It's not my primary system, though (which is a problem since I am slowly collecting a backlog for it... I am mostly gaming on PC).

Despite all the bad press the Wii U got, and it’s early abandonment, I never felt as underwhelmed by it, as I do by this machine.
Then you didn't own a WiiU when it launched. The first year of the WiiU was terrible compared to the Switch. There was only Pikmin 3, Lego City Undercover, Wonderful 101, Wind Waker HD and WöRLD for core gamers (and WöRLD came exactly 1 year after launch, so you can't even count this as a release for the first year), the rest were party games like Nintendo Land, Sing Party, Wii Sports Club, Wii Fit U and Wii Party U. The 2nd year was great, though... but you can't exactly call the 2nd year for the switch bad either, because the ports are still great games for lots of people.

The 3DS had a terrible 1st year as well.

Since the N64 I've treated Nintendo consoles as my secondary system to a main console.

Seriously. Last Nintendo system I owned was a GC, it's hilarious to me that they still can't get on the level of the other 2 when it comes to big third party titles.

On the other hand they get shit like Bayo 2 and Octopath Traveller.

Still haven't bought a switch. Just don't see the value for it at 400.

I'm interested in botw, Odyssey, and some wiiu ports I missed now, but will probably get one this holiday with Smash. Should be a bundle or whatever too by then.

I only buy Nintendo hardware for their exclusives when they've built up a good library. I have no interest in third party games that I can play better on a Xbox or PS4.

Dr. Claus

I have plenty of games to play on my Switch, some killer exclusives, and some great games yet to come. I didn't pick up a number of Wii U titles due to the dying platform, or because of the announcement of the NX. There are plenty of great games to play on the system and its first year is already miles better than the first 3 for Xbox One and the first 1.5 for PS4, in my opinion.

Can things be better? Of course, anything can be improved - but I am not miffed in the least about what I have got or what is coming.

Gamers are usually pretty impressed (and grateful) if the first year of their console has 1 or 2 decent exclusives. This is considered "normal" while the developers get accustomed to the system...

...except for a Nintendo system. Look, not saying that Nintendo hasn't gotten lazy in the past, but in the first year of Switch we got a Zelda, a Mario Kart, two fighting games that are both pretty distinct (Pokken and ARMS), the first 3D Mario in 4 years (or 8 years, if you consider Galaxy 2 to be the last proper 3D Mario), a smattering of indie and arcade games, the best Bomberman in years, Xenoblade 2, an exceptional puzzle game (folks, Puyo Tetris should be on your shelf yesterday), several more ports and Ultimate editions...

How is that bad? Seriously, I have a Wii U and therefore should be "bored to tears" with my Switch, right? And yet I'm constantly entertained when I pick up my Switch. My kids have been playing the system daily, which is admittedly more than me but I keep getting distracted by the sweet siren call of my PS2 hooked up to the CRT downstairs. The system is having a much better first year games-wise than the Wii, the Wii U, the 3DS, the DS, the GBA, the Gamecube, and the N64 (in my oh-so-humble opinion). If anything, the second year is a little bit weak so far but goodness, I'm still catching up on 2017 Switch games.

Show me how the PS4 or X1 had a better first year. Show me. List-wars the applesauce outta me.

Was there ever any proof of that? Bar the Uber slow releases thus far that seem perplexing if that’s all of Nintendo’s dev teams focussed on one machine.

It would however explain a lot though and is a classic Nintendo move as they do enjoy a good tightfisting every now and then. Or so I’ve heard.

They can't. There hasn't been a system since the PS2 that's had as good as a first year as the Switch. I've got 24 games for it already.

New first party games:

Breath of the Wild (I don't care if people think it's a port it was released simulatneously on both platforms)
Splatoon 2
Arms
Super Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade 2

First party ports:

Mario Kart 8
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Pokken Tournament
Bayonetta 1 + 2

New third party games and exclusives*:

Mario Vs Rabbids*
Fortnite
Hollow Knight*
Steamworld Dig 2
Celeste
Street fighter Anniversary
Spectre of Torment
Sonic Mania

Third party ports:

Doom
Wolfenstein 2
Skyrim Remastered
Dark Souls Remastered
Rocket League
Stardew Valley
Steamworld Heist
Minecraft

It's just absurd to say theres no games in the first 15 months and that list isn't even exhaustive, or taking into account the next 6 months or 2019. Basicaly anyone who complains Switch hasn't got games, only plays AAA bollocks.

The system is so under powered for a home console, yes. Here's hoping Nintendo sees the value in a Switch Pro that runs at full 1080p and has a better battery life.
