I am boycotting, but to be fair I don't give a shit about this game, so it's a fun opportunity to be a dick about something.

I curious as to whether or not my enjoyment of the game actually increases now that I know it was causing some people immeasurable stress and suffering.

That's the sorta thing that escalated Kingdom Come Deliverance earlier this year from awesome to masterpiece for me

Hey Mods or 'Mister Apoc' how about you update the thread with the actual relevant context from the new response from Dan Houser? now it's simply misleading everyone, he only said that he, Lazlow, Rupert Humphries and Mike Unsworth had 3 WEEKS that 'they felt necessary' to crunch that summed up to 100 hours, 4 people that wanted to work those 3 weeks like this, he then proceeded to say that "No employee, Senior of Junior is demanded to work like this at all".
Lazlow is a Rockstar writer? That just blew my mind.

after the recent labor story and the "100 hour weekends"

wtf why do Rockstar have 100 hour weekends when we have 48?!

For realsies though - this post does nothing but sensationalise a nonstory that was taken out of context.

Basically - Mister Apoc thread

Not a fan of Rockstar games past San Andreas so I won't be picking it up but I feel like a boycott will accomplish nothing. The game is still going to sell 50 million copies because no one outside of the internet will care. Let's pretend 1 million people care enough to actually boycott, that's still 49 million and they made their money back.

I've heard stories about Rockstar being a shit place to work but they're going to continue to be massively successful and by this point, I think if you're applying to work for them you know what you are getting into

You should look at some of the cast members of the previous games if you weren't aware of some of this stuff. I always forget how many celebrity voices were in San Andreas.

And that was the last time they really did it.

You should check out the list of actors for Vice City. It's just as impressive.

I expected Rockstar to input this amount of work hours for a masterpiece of gaming such as Red Dead Redemption 2...

The only people boycotting the game are PC gamers who have to wait 2 years before they can play it 🤣

While I don't agree or think it's fair to put the PC gamers on hold and have to wait for this to release on PC, I purchased it for the PS4 and will most likely purchase it again on PC... IF there's a good incentive for me to do so.

I remember reading an issue of OPM when they reviewed San Andreas that detailed all the celebs in the game. It was crazy to see so many big names all in one game.

Yeah, I'm sure I read something very recently along the lines of "big talents are a hassle to work with due to ego, so we don't bother any more".

I'm glad Rockstar stop hiring big celebs to do voice work. Helps to cut cost and stop making about the voice actors and more about the characters of the game.

I will spend more than 100 hours playing this shit to honor those heroes

Yeah it was the 100 hour week interview. Houser got into some shit with Burt Reynolds during Vice City and was butting heads with Chuck D during production of San Andreas. After those episodes they decided to just stick with minor actors.

I am.
But not for the reason you listed.
I would have pre ordered a CE of it, but as things are, I'm not gonna buy a game months after its real release date, just because they want idiots to double dip on it. Screw them.
For double dippers, you also have no-dippers like me.
I might play it using my friend's copy, though.
I'm confused (genuinely), what is it they're doing?
Postponing PC verions to cash out on double dippers.

I have always found a healthy separation from personal and professional to be a good thing. It's obvious this industry preys upon the naivety of youth because of the allure of being part of something they love and are passionate about.

As a consumer, I fully support every one of them working 169 hours weeks (there's only 168 hours in 7 days) if it means I get my video games a week earlier.

I'm frequently overworked and underpaid and also have to work on-call shifts where I'm greatly underpaid because of that same California exemption law. Where's everybody crying foul for me? You're not because just like video games you're only focused on the aspects you care about.

Find a new job or quit fucking crying.

*yawn* Boycott the clothes that come from Vietnam, the iPhones/Androids from China, shoes from South America, cotton from Africa, etc.

Having done some pretty time extensive graphic design work in my time, as someone who creates you sometimes get into a rhythm and while a 100 hr work week would suck for a work/ life balance. If you're doing what you love doing, creating something then I'm sure some of the people creating this game found that rhythm and the need to see their work come to life in the form of a finished product that people will treasure. Likely for alot of these people they picked their career out of passion, so I wouldnt say its the same as someone going to their job in a call centre or at a construction site, those jobs are nobodies passion.

Only several individuals/writers worked like that for several weeks and they were paid for those extra hours, and I guess working on something like RDR2 is pure motivation itself to exceed gamer's expectations, not like you're cleaning the toilets, washing dishes or carrying bricks from A to B 100h/week. It's morons who rip out words out of the context and start these useless idiotic discussions, I dare you to repeat school. Now throw your fucking iDevice out of the window and start boycotting Apple, because that shit is being assembled in the third world countries where working conditions are truly poor and people are working only because they got their families to feed and other options are on the same level. I'm sure if you're writer at Rockstar or mid/senior developer, you can quit your job and find another one real fast.

But...but...if I don't virtue signal hard enough, I'll never get a golden fedora or have a trophy girlfriend that looks like Zoe Quinn or Lena Dunham.

I have no interest in this subject because I don't care about professionals who don't value themselves. They work for peanuts, after you divide the total amount of hours worked by the actual money they made. But this constant brainwashing is what drives young people towards these traps.

It doesn't matter how you or anyone else feel about it, or how passionate anyone is. They are making peanuts and the CEO is making millions. They are basically working for someone else to get rich.

Things like financial education or career management are important, especially to young people. Instead of cheering 100h work weeks for no money. Why not cheer 100h work weeks for making lots of money?

In what planet? Hahaha. In normal employee/employer relationships the employees will get a paycheck much smaller, but they have rights. They work a certain amount of hours, have paid overtime, etc. As an employee you sell a certain amount of work for money.

When you are working 100h of hours, you are not acting as an employee. You are acting like a partner would, i.e., someone who has a direct interest in the success of the business because of personal investment. It's bad if you aren't getting paid accordingly.

Man, I'm just getting sick of all these pointless "controversy" that filled entire NeoGaf forums these days. There is not proper discussion about the actual games anymore, its seems here people are more interested the "controversy" behind the game rather than the actual game itself. Heck here the game with most "controversy" will get the most attention, even VC4 got that little attention because whole butt grab controversy and maybe if Fist of the north Star had some kind of "controversy" behind it maybe it would got some attention.

I don't disagree with you thats like any profession, North American's are brain washed into working longer hours for less pay, fewer benefits, less vacation in any industry for some CEO to make 100x of what hes worth. Only for that same hard working employee to be told shortly after the work has been completed that as per business needs they're are being let go.

The only point I was making was that atleast the young foolish fools are doing something they are passionate about, its up to those individual people to be smart enough to take that experience and move forward with it, be it creating their own company/ indie title/ opening up their own studio. The days of a company taking care of you and rewarding the work you put in with a golden handshake are long gone, they were gone before we likely started in the workforce, I'm 38 and now companies wouldnt spit on you if you were on fire when it comes down to it.

I personally want to play the shit out of this game so I wont be boycotting it.

I don't need to boycott it. I have no interest in the title whatsoever, will therefore not purchase it in the foreseeable future.

Read OP and think that is some over sensitive, whiny ass, bitch made pansies wish to stage a limp wristed "protest" about some people working to make a game then they should really reconsider their whole life as most of the other stuff they own was made by 4 year old Chinese kids in appalling conditions and they don't seem to give a toss about that. Hypocrites.

Ummmm...no I’m not boycotting the sequel to one of my favourite games of all time because the outrage machine online decided to take a position on behalf of the workers there, without knowing details, specifics, or anything at all really outside of an offhand comment or two, about a crunch period that notoriously occurs before the release of practically every single game. No, but thanks a million.

Since you seem to know, I ask my question again. How much are Rockstar's devs paid, exactly?

Aonuma didn't get sick because of his work on Majora's Mask. Retro Studios didn't got slaped because they had a Metroid game in their backs. Sakurai is just some guy that slept in the office to get as many hours as he could in Smash Bros...

There's a lot of developers that work hard as fuck. Boycotting RDR and being a gamer is like saying that you don't eat cow because it's murder, but eat chicken, fish and other animals.
