it honestly amazes me, you have a young lady from Latvia who cosplays a character she looks up to, who happens to be black female, this is totally the opposite of being racist.
She probably doesn't even know what or who blackface is, I for example are older than her and never heard of blackface until recently, this in a western country.

She could have done all of that without painting her skin black.

Blackface outrage literally isn't a thing outside of the U.S. No one in vast majority rest of the world gives a dam if you dressed up in black face or not. The media here is starting to try and pick it up anytime the U.S runs with it but no one seems to give a fuck, still see it regularly at dress up parties.

It strikes me that they basically are treating having dark skin as a disability. As in, the only reason to have it is because (1) you dont have any choice in the matter, or (2) you are faking it to provoke, exploit or mock.

Sorry, but this seems kinda horrible and racist in my opinion,

Here's some new funny fuckery shit from the other forum:

You have been banned for the following reason: User Banned (2 Weeks): Excusing and rationalizing blackface over a series of posts.

Uhhhh... I'm South Asian Black you fucktards. I can't even reach out to an admin because of their absolute stupidity.

All this because I don't agree with the main narrative. That place is literally for Hitler Youth.

This was probably the best COA but I know in mirror world where B is A and JK Rowling just will not release the last HP Book to the sounds of GRR Martian verbally spewing every stupid detail of Game of Throne's cast's sexuality that some chancer would say something stupid and light Twitch's underpants on fire if she did the cosplay as is.

Are you claiming there's something wrong with her painting her skin black?

If you are, explain yourself. If you're not, what exactly is the point of this exercise of yours?

She's not American so, I'm sure she didn't mean any harm by it. But in America, yes there'd be something wrong with her painting her skin black.

Reason: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface

I don't personally have time to teach you what blackface is and why it's bad, but I provided a link to help you learn and understand.

Robert Downey Jr's career would be obliterated if these people ever found out he played a black character in Tropic Thunder...

All people knew what Robert Downey Jr was doing. It was satire layered on top of satire. And it was very well done and written.

How long before the outcries become “they are whitewashing our cosplay!!”? You can’t stop the drama queens.

I'm all too familiar with Blackface, thank you.

It seems you are the one in dire need of basic education.
For example, you need to be taught a distinction: if a white American paints her face black that in and of itself doesn't necessarily qualify as Blackface or any sort of ill-intent.

Indeed, it would be entirely legitimate and appropriate for a white American to paint her face black as part of a cosplay.

If you are going to claim that since it would offend people she shouldn't do it, then let me tell you that many of your statements here offend me and therefore I ask if you're prepared to shut your mouth in order not to offend me.

If rabid far left wing lunatics want to get offended, by all means, let them scratch their irrational itch. They walk around the world with a hammer. Everything seems like a nail to them. Others owe them nothing and the moral thing to do is not to cave in to their puerile tantrums.

No one owns skin colour. It is not the intelectual property of a group of people and they don't get to assign meaning and ill-intent when others decide to paint their face black as part of a clearly innocuous cosplay.

The freedom of others cannot be curtailed just to appease the frivolous whims of a few.

I'm going to make a generality, but it's funny how it's always white people who insist on being racist and defending racism.

I've never ever seen any asian, middle-easter, african, south-american or indian insist on making racist jokes, caricatures or aggressions and then call it "freedom of expression" or coming up with some bullshit reverse racism argument.

You are not serious right? Asians can make racist comments about white people and they get hired by The New York Times.

It's funny how, since there's 99% chances you're white, you don't realise the contradiction in your argument: you are essentially forcing your racism on other people and actually claiming to own the meaning of their skins colors and that you can disclaim blackface as being innocuous.

You are doing exactly what you suppose is not happening: you are forcing your racist views that not only blackface is not offensive or isn't a problem for black people, but also that the experience of being black still doesn't belong to black people.

PLOT TWIST: I'm not black, but I sure as hell am not white either, and there's not a single ounce of doubt about who's defending racism because that's the current emerging problem, most white people on forum are increasingly and constantly defending racism.

Do asians make whiteface and then tell white people it's not racist, they know better and it belongs to them to choose if it's okay to make a whiteface? Because I've NEVER ever seen that anywhere...

Stop pretending you know anything about me.
You don't, as the above statement clearly shows.

you don't realise the contradiction in your argument: you are essentially forcing your racism

Slanderous lie from the usual bucket of filth.
I despise and oppose racism.

on other people and actually claiming to own the meaning of their skins colors and that you can disclaim blackface as being innocuous.

Another lie.

I said - and maintain - her cosplay was innocuous, not blackface. I did not claim Blackface was innocuous.

Does your ideology require you to lie at any chance?

You are doing exactly what you suppose is not happening: you are forcing your racist views

Quote one racist view of mine, or face the direct accusation of being a vulgar liar.

that not only blackface is not offensive or isn't a problem for black people,

I said no such thing about Blackface. I said her cosplay was innocuous.
Please read more carefully before replying in such clumsy terms.

but also that the experience of being black still doesn't belong to black people.

I made no such comment.
Another lie.

Does your ideology require you to lie continuously?

PLOT TWIST: I'm not black,

Irrelevant.
The truthfulness of a statement is not dependant upon who makes it.

but I sure as hell am not white either, and there's not a single ounce of doubt about who's defending racism

No one here is defending racism.
Drop the lies.

because that's the current emerging problem, most white people on forum are increasingly and constantly defending racism.

You can't possibly know who is saying what.
Again, stop pretending that you do.

This is just yet another ludicrous baseless claim from someone who decided to post a long unsubstantiated smear, consisting of nothing but lies, a tactic taken directly from the playbook of those who, unprepared or unwilling to win any sort of debate, are forced to resort to the kind of infamy your post is the epitome of.

sooooo...let's just say there were blue people. And a white person decided to cosplay as Mystique from Xmen...then this would be bad for wearing blueface?

I'm black, wasn't in the least offended by this. It's all about the context. It's not like she's doing this in a racist manner. She apparently admire Lifeline and the costume just wouldn't be complete if she didn't take the steps she did.

Dave Chappelle is more offensive than this...and he's hilarious.

I'm not comfortable with this idea that because SJWs get offended over everything we have to get offended over nothing, sometimes shit is simply offensive, y'all.

Given the historical context of white people using make up to look like a different race, it makes people uncomfortable, now should people maybe the let past of it go? That's a debate to have, but it's understandable why it would make someone uncomfortable, this isn't a typical case of SJWs making mountains out of molehills.

And it'll be easier to get over the past, if it didn't keep happening in the present.

Virginia governor apologizes for 'racist and offensive' costume in photo showing people in blackface and KKK garb
Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam confirmed Friday he was in a racist yearbook photo showing one person dressed in blackface and another in the KKK's signature white hood and robes, and apologized for "the decision I made to appear as I did in this photo and for the hurt that decision caused then and now." The photograph, which was obtained by CNN, appears in the 1984 yearbook for Eastern Virginia Medical School. Northam did not say whether he was wearing the KKK outfit or blackface.

While I sit on the side that doesn't think America's obsession with blackface needs to be applied to the rest of the world, I also agree with this.

I've seen pictures of black people cosplaying white characters and they don't paint their skin white for it. And it's not even a "don't want to be disrespectful with whiteface" thing. It probably would just feel stupid and unnecessary.

Like we can all tell this is Lara Croft and it would have looked stupid if she painted her skin white:

so everyone has to go with what americans find uncomfortable because amercia has a racist past? context matters and everyone should know and look for it in all situations. blackface can be used to be racist as mckmas8808 mckmas8808 just showed, or it can be used to show how absurd blackface was used as someone showed earlier with RDJ in Tropic Thunder, or it can even be used to show admiration for a person or character. each case should be looked at and judged on its context and not just blackface is racist.

You're going to "make a generality".

it's funny how it's always white people who insist on being racist and defending racism.

So, according to you, only white people are racists.
Such in-depth knowledge of history and the world you have.

But, of course, you're here to "make a generality".
Sure .

I've never ever seen any asian, middle-easter, african, south-american or indian insist on making racist jokes,

That week you're taking off to familiarize yourself with basic history and geopolitics, use it wisely and check "anecdotal evidence".

caricatures or aggressions and then call it "freedom of expression" or coming up with some bullshit reverse racism argument.

Only white people can be racist, hey?
You're definitely one to stereotype.

When others do it, it's awful and terrible and evil.
When you do it, it's ok.

Regardless of the cosplayer's intent, there is a history that goes along with something like blackface that is by and large derogatory and outright aggressive. I am white, and have never experienced that type of discrimination nor can I really appreciate going through it. The best thing I can do is avoid overtly doing something (such as blackface) that has a longstanding history of being offensive to a group of people.

It doesn't matter what the current climate is like, something like blackface is a reference (whether you agree or not) to a time when black people were being lynched and blackface was done to mock and harass them. Your assumed right of expression, which is commonly misunderstood to be the first amendment (hint: it's not), is gone the second that expression impacts negatively to someone else.

This is not a "snowflake" issue and while the streamer may have not actually meant anything negative, people need to understand that in today's climate of culture you can't do shit like this. Especially if you're in the public eye like a stream, just take 5 seconds to stop and think about what your doing and how it might impact others. If everyone did this we'd be in a much better place than we are right now.

blackface was a thing in America for a long time. it features prominently in a scene from The Jazz Singer (1980), with popular singer Neil Diamond performing in front of an all-black club an utterly cringeworthy song. recently it was used by Disney's Robert Downy Jr. in Tropical Thunder (2008) but as Obama-era ironic racism. it gets away with it because it lampshades it and is self-aware.

but even then, it was very much an oddity. that sort of thing has been out of fashion in the US for decades now. you could get away w it in the 80s (alot of stuff flew in the 80s) but not the 90s and for sure as shit not now. every company in America's HR department is well versed in this stuff. the shareholders do not want a scandal that costs them millions of real dollars. if you are arguing that an American company should bypass it's own self interests in order to preserve the culture of a foreign land, lol, that is so not what we do.

Not a promising start.

A highly regrettable page of American history no one is obliged to know or reference, especially contemporary non-Americans.

That you would disregard intent, as you so openly did in your opening sentence, is just baffling.

I just love the deliberate vagueness of your wording: "impacts" "negatively".
The Supreme court begs to differ.
Good heavens they're in charge, not you!

This is not a "snowflake" issue

Some people seem to think they are owed special treatment just because they are who they are. What is beyond bizarre is that even though pretty much everyone seems to agree she most likely meant no harm, some maintain what she did was nevertheless objectionable and are implicitly condoning Twitch's actions.

and while the streamer may have not actually meant anything negative,

Here we go.

people need to understand that in today's climate of culture you can't do shit like this.

So you assert.
The moral action is to do what's right. If others being offended is enough to stop someone from doing whatever, why does this only seem to apply to certain groups? Again, your possibly rationale offends me. Would you be prepared to stop posting in order not to offend me?

I'm okay with it, but mainly due to the fact that there isn't any negative history of so-called "white-face". Like honestly......there's no such thing as white face technically. Check the quote below.

The first minstrel shows were performed in 1830s New York by white performers with blackened faces (most used burnt cork or shoe polish) and tattered clothing who imitated and mimicked enslaved Africans on Southern plantations. These performances characterized blacks as lazy, ignorant, superstitious, hypersexual, and prone to thievery and cowardice. Blackface performances grew particularly popular between the end of the Civil War and the turn-of-the century in Northern and Midwestern cities, where regular interaction with African Americans was limited. White racial animus grew following Emancipation when antebellum stereotypes collided with actual African Americans and their demands for full citizenship including the right to vote. The influence of minstrelsy and racial stereotyping on American society cannot be overstated. New media ushered minstrel performances from the stage, across radio and television airwaves, and into theaters. Popular American actors, including Shirley Temple, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney donned blackface, bridging the minstrel performance across generations, and making blackface (racial parody, and stereotypes) a family amusement.
https://nmaahc.si.edu/blog-post/blackface-birth-american-stereotype

That's from a blog post from the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington DC. Blackface was most popular during a period were black people weren't allowed to work as actors, singers, radio jockeys, etc. White people are allowed to work in Hollywood and in the music industry. The situation and context is way different.

It continue not being present no matter how you spin it.

Guilty by association.

Your argument amounts to accusations of being guilty by assoaciation. Blackface was derogatory so everywhere where a face is blackened intent is to be disregarded and, for all intents and purposes, the cosplayer to be found guilty no matter what.

This is where your side has brought us to: the continuous erosion and depreciation of the most basic standards of fairness and justice.

When did I ever say anything about twitch or their right to do what they want? They're a free company and I have no issue with the choices they make about their platform, it's THEIR choice. Even if I don't agree with that choice they're aloud to do whatever they wish to and would fight tooth and nail if other people got to make that decision for them.

Backward blackface? There's customs in europe for it we'll over 150 years old that have nothing to do with the current movement in the U.S I know this may be hard to realise for you, but I'll spell it out.

U.S AND CURRENT POLITICAL MOVEMENTS DO NOT EQUAL THE REST OF THE WORLDS CURRENT POLITICAL MOVEMENTS AND WORLD VIEWS. We as other countries see things differently and to call others backward is hilarious, people mean no ill intent for it. I could the U.S backward on several facts, but I don't. Because every country is different and unique, hell I love the place that much I visit every year.

You most not now many asians,middle-easterns, africans, south-americans or indians, because racism is a much bigger problem in all those cultures than anywhere in the US/Europe.
