Ariel cast in live action Little Mermaid Movie

Are you a troll? Authentic to their own Little Mermaid story that they're adapting to live action.

Oh I see now, you perceive yourself as more concerned with the quality of Disney's IP than Disney itself does! That's quite the cross to bear, man. Put that shit on your resume.

You were wrong, we shall now proceed to storm the Disney offices and start murdering their employees.
Bruh it's just a children's tale, no need to do that, start with a petition or announce a boycott on Twitter or something

But it doesn't look like that. From video, it's quite soft. Those are big curls she has. It moves when she's kicking.
She looks like you could use her head for dusting

You don't seem to be a fan of black hairstyles

They already have a tending hashtag about keeping Ariel White... And a Facebook group (or had the FB group)

Hey good for her, lead role in a Disney movie is sure to be a nice boost to her career :)

I know there can't possibly be actual grown adults that are legitimately upset that an imaginary character from a children's story is a certain skin color.

You would have to be, like, the *biggest* snowflake ever. Like seriously the most fragile bitch ever to be bothered by that lmaooo
You're right. Silly of people to raise a fuss over casting a black girl as a mermaid from a fairy tale. Despite the fact that they've depicted in the animated movie and various merchandise as a white redhead. But hey, she's not real. So no harm done?

You know who else isn't real? T'Challa the Black Panther. Let's cast a white guy to play him. I'm sure there'll be no uproar over that.

And The Little Mermaid was a fairytale written by a Danish author and as someone pointed out in the thread, the story is beloved in Denmark that they erected a statue of her in Copenhagen.

The argument they're using is that she's a fictional character so by all rights she's free game to cast her as a POC. But as I've pointed out, so is T'Challa. Wakanda isn't a real place in Africa and by the laws of adapting from one media to another you can change stuff around. Hell, someone already mentioned The Princess and the Frog and they changed the setting to New Orleans so that the princess is now a black girl.

bro I’m agreeing with you. I’m probably just doing it in a stupid way because I’m exhausted.

They use the “lol wow bunch of manchildren butthurt about a FICTIONALLLLL CHARACTERRRRR” argument until it’s one of their cherished fictional characters, then suddenly race is crucial and must be preserved.

Damn dude, this is really getting to you. Is there something specific about it that's russlin' your jimmies or are you just like weirdly passionate about consistency across children's cartoons?

You can admit it's because you're worried that your lifesized Little Mermaid body pillow is no longer authentic. This is a safe space.

I actually specified it was an entire fictional species (ie: a mermaid), not a specific character (ie: T'Challa) but I understand that amongst the people who are genuinely upset over the skin color of a children's story character, reading is not necessarily a strong suit.

It's like they have double standards or something.

Ahh, ya got me. I fuck pillows and don’t know how to read. Twelve pages of discussion and that’s what you get from this thread: everyone who has slightly negative opinions about this must be a cartoon-obsessed manlet virgin. You cracked the code. Gotta go, mom’s bringing my tendies any second now.

LMAO
We at 12 pages now, people still EEEEEERRRRING about it?
🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉🙉

Nah man, they're just very slightly upset about it it's no big deal though shut up okay it's really important to the country of Denmark :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

Hey man, you said it, I was giving you guys the benefit of the doubt thinking there was absolutely no way there were adults who were *that* fragile on here.

I thought this was where we came to point and laugh at the easily offended

Having an opinion about something that doesn't fall in line with blind optimism makes people fragile now. Lol. You guys actually gonna say something relevant or are you just here to mock people? Trolling is all fine and good, but I'm not sure it gives you any high ground to stand on.

I can see why people would be annoyed by the casting, due to childhood nostalgia and all that, but this is the kind of thing that should really only piss you off for maybe an hour, then you forgot all about it and continue on with your adult life. If this shit is really getting under your skin to the point of raging, then you need to revaluate yourself a bit.

I have no attachment to Disney, but for the sake of comparison, this would be the equivalent of Jamie Foxx being cast as the new live action He-Man. Yes it would fuck me off, but I'm not going to dwell on it.

Also, yes this girl is has a unique-ish looking face, but I dig that. Calling her ugly is kind of laughable. Not finding her attractive is one thing, but ugly is a big fucking stretch.

One of the best ways to alienate and stir-up resentment and ill-feeling towards someone / a group is to give them preferential treatment at the expense of the others. That's all this constant identity pandering does - it makes the problems it claims to be addressing worse and increases divides and resentment towards the favoured group. Ironically it's a textbook tactic that's been used throughout history to target and vicimise particular groups for political / social gain but because we don't seem to pay attention to history any more people are seemingly oblivious to the risks and consequences of such behaviour.

It's a cheap trick for Disney to score some woke PR points and get a ton of free publicity for the film, but it comes at the expense of creating a greater sense of unfairness, resentment and division. Disney don't care about that cost though because they don't pay it, on the contrary they profit from it as people take ever more polarised positions and are even more easily swayed into purchasing something that reflects their "side". The film could be hot garbage and at this point people will take up their battle lines and go to see it just to show they're woke or just to show they're "not not woke". Brilliant. Evil. But brilliant.

I think the annoying part for me is the precedence being set by Disney more so than the singer/actress whatever, i mean she's just looking at it as an opportunity. But to me it's a job that she should not have been chosen for, and that's not to be insulting it just means that i'd prefer staying true to the character. The same way your saying the people are raging about this and need to re-valuate there life, i guarantee no one would be saying anything if they chose a white , red head actress for the role. Because we all know Ariel is a white red head.

My problem is Disney is stirring up controversy, outrage that honestly doesn't even need to happen. They don't need to pander to my audience, they don't need to take an opportunity away from an actress who does fit the character.

Just stay true to the character, because if the situation was reversed there would be outrage. If Black Panther was a white actor and they changed the story so that it's like some white orphan who gets taken in or something, there would be extreme backlash and outrage. People would go see it, but the backlash, death threats, the unhinged media, the racism , people would point out how drunk Hollywood is on the white savior koolaid or something, they would absolutely tear into that movie.

I wonder if people would even care about this 10 years ago, before the whole minority/LGBTQ obsession.

This isn't about a cartoon character being changed, i never cared about Ariel, i haven't even watched the original movie. It's about the double standards. Everyday we are bombarded by all this minority pandering and how evil and racists white people are, blah blah. It's annoying enough as is but it gets pretty stupid when they do the same stuff they tell you to not do.

People would be against anything starring black folks. I remember reading in this forum complaints about Black Panther... "How is this diversity? Where are the white folks?"

And you think this will turn people racist? Folks got over Idris Elba as Heimdall. Folks got over Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury (especially after they found out he was already black in the Ultimate line of comics).

I remember when Toni Braxton was cast as Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. White people were so angry that many of them boycotted the show ... Then many other white people.bought tickets just because a known celebrity was in it.

And how, pray-tell, is this preferential treatment? One black actress is playing a fictional character that was white in the toons. This is a remake. Nothing has to stay the same in a remake. Preferential treatment? Black people are 13% of the population. Disney is a huge conglomerate. They may have hired her as a stunt... Or they may have hired her because she was the best fit for the part acting and singing-wise ... they also held an open casting for the part to ANY ethnicity... So she had to try out like anyone else. They might have chosen an Asian girl if Halle hadn't auditioned. Your resentment is misplaced.

It always amazes me how some people try to frame castings like this as potentially "white vs black" ... It really isn't that deep.

Cool with me put it in the pile of live action remakes I won’t see. Already sick of the woke police scouring the internet for people complaining but I guess that’s just what they are gonna do with every movie announcement from here on out. Gotta sell that “some people are mad at this movie, see it to make them more mad!” Idiocy

I understood you quite well the first time, thank you very much, why a white, red-haired girl got turned into a black, raven-haired girl? Besides that Disney hates white people, we already established that.

Just because you got banned from Disneyland for wanking on the teacup ride doesn't mean Disney hates all white people.

Also tell me which role in their movies was best directed for a black person but it went to a white person instead, because I see the opposite happening.

Open casting for all colors. Halle Bailey won casting.

But it seems most here don't know how that works.
There's nothing right about having "open casting" for an established character. Is it that hard to pick a new mermaid name? Like for instance they're making a new Vampire Slayer tv show, but the new (black) lead won't be named Buffy.

Ok, let's break this down while I'm trying not to laugh more...

Disney is run by money hungry corporate blood suckers. They have no political allegiance. Money is their god. They will do anything to make more of it.

They had an open casting call for girls of all colors to vie for the part of Ariel. Whoever got the part, there would be controversy. Because they sure weren't going the safe route no matter who won the casting!

Also, your second mini-paragraph... Could you rephrase that because it isn't clear to me at all...

Ok, now back to my laughter! :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

It's a remake ... A live action remake.

She's established in the toons ... Not live action.

And they kept true to the other live action remakes (mostly... Only partly for Jasmine in Aladdin) as far as race goes... Though Emma Watson was miscast, IMO, for Beauty and the Beast. One black girl and the internet loses their minds. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Edit: I guess if they made a new mermaid that didn't follow the original story or even if it DID follow the original story, you lot would be complaining about it anyway.

Not gonna happen its always a one way street for far leftists, if you point this out to them they try to distract with insults ala "fragile, who cares, skin color is whatever, racist, blablaba"... these are the same people who would scream literal murder if you had a white person play the main part in black panther 2 for example, of course right now they would deny this claim because they know it wont happen in a million years so its a safe denial... which again kinda proves my point.
