The ugliest graphics you have ever seen.

I dare you to beat my example.

There are ugly games and then there's the "what the hell am i looking at" Batman Forever for the Game Boy. I literally don't know what some of these backgrounds are suppose to represent.

A couple of screens i made with a Game Boy shader:

And a couple i found from later levels:

This is a finished product that got sold for money. Look at those flat, empty surfaces, look at those smudges and those garbled things. Just look at it!

Well it is the gameboy classic. It was a 4-bit portable. I can think of worse games with better specs

Microid's Iznogoud for Playstation is one of the worst looking platform games i've ever seen. Its really awful, and one of those games where you never know if you can stand in a platform or it is just part of the background.

Yeah, the same Microids that will bring the probably-crappy remake of XIII.

All the games posted so far look fine for their respective hardware 🙄

Agreed.
Ugliness =/= hardware limitation.

You look at the Batman game on the Game Boy and say "it looks fine for a Game Boy game"?

Have you ever seen other Game Boy games?

This isn't ugly because of the hardware. Look at the art direction and the way they designed these backgrounds. Every other Game Boy game looks better than this : /

There are quite a few worse looking racing games on Wii than Cruisn'. I'd say every single game from Data Design Interactive (the Playstation 2's Phoenix Games of Wii).

876249-urban-extreme-street-rage-wii-screenshot-mid-race.png

Urban Extreme could be the worst of them. It does not only look terrible, it runs like 5-10FPS sometimes. And, as far as i played, it is completely unplayable due unresponsive controls.

There's nothing inherently bad about those graphics. The art is what you hate here.

Bad graphics (and bad... everything, really) could be for example Life of Black Tiger for PS4
People just push too hard the Life of Black Tiger joke. Of course it looks amazingly bad for Playstation 4, but it was just a 3 years old Android game at that point. It is a matter of quality control and easy-porting Unity enviroment, not graphics.

The original game was released on July 2014 for Android, i made a video of it, back in the day. For a 2014 Android shovelware game it wasnt that bad (transparency problems were just a classic Mali-400 glitch in Unity).

gameloft games
Gameloft was a quality-standard back in Java ME days. They developed the best looking games ever seen on that platform, i mean, by far. Macrospace, THQ Mobile, GLU, Digital Chocolate, etc didnt come even close to Gameloft level. Their use of the Mobile 3D Graphics API was unbelievable.

They also did the best looking Android/iOS games between ... i'd say 2007-2010. Nowdays they do average quality games for iOS/Android but Gameloft Madrid NOVA series and Gameloft Barcelona Asphalt series still look great.

That NDS king Kong game. I get that the console wasn't very strong but holy shit

peter-jacksons-king-kong-20051202053616360.jpg
At least it was a first-person shooter. It could have been another Java ME Gameloft port, like other DS games.

But i agree, it doesnt look good. Ubisoft should have hired n-Space (the kings of the FPS games in DS) instead of Ubisoft Casablanca. They did a great job with Prince of Persia: The Fallen King tho.

Love the platform, love the current-gen ports when they’re done well, but the more... questionable ports on Switch definitely qualify for this.

I don’t have screens, but Rocket League at launch, before fixes, was something else. :messenger_grimmacing_

Not trolling I seriously hate the way modern games look

Nothing appealing or interesting about this to me just generic bullshit

This man is why we had an entire generation focusing on the colors brown and gray. Both of these look fantastic, and about as far away from generic as you can get.

And then you have games like Shadowgun releasing in Android back in 2011, a full 3 years before, or NOVA 3 in 2012. Life of Black Tiger might not be complete trash in Android, but it's definitely near the bottom of the barrel.

Three years, right. But Shadowgun was a Unity 5.3 game while Life Of Black Tiger was a Unity 4.6 game. There is quite a leap there in terms of effects and graphical resources.

Shadowgun was a Madfinger (Dead Trigger) game, they were really close to Nvidia and Tegra technology, and they launched like one game every year of two years. While 1C was just a little studio launching like 10-20 games every year.

I mean, it was bad but not that bad. Blame Sony zero quality control and the publisher (not 1C Games) for the Playstation 4 port.

They began to rip games like Grand Theft Auto, Uncharted or Starcraft in early Android days. And, still, those rips were the best games of the market, lol.

Name something even close to Gangstar 2: Kings of L.A in 2008, Shadow Guardian in 2010 or StarFront: Collision in 2011..

I think Atari 2600, CGA PC, C64, and Spectrum ZX games are pretty much the worst looking. Even worse than the original Gameboy. There's something about the bright disgusting colors that's really off putting.

So fucking offensive. At least you could tell that Gameboy games had actual artists producing the art. Early computers had so much "programmer art" that they really don't hold up worth a shit.

Atari VCS didnt even have a framebuffer for graphics, the display was drawn in every single scanline. So his graphics are not quite comparable to any other videoconsole ever released. Still, they managed to create things like Solaris.

And Spectrum, probably the less capable of those 8-bit computers, had really good looking titles. Like Target Renegade.

But it had 2-bit graphics, which is what the poster you were responding to was talking about - I.E. every pixel on the screen could only be one of 4 intensity levels.
Ok it has 2-bit color. Still, it's not a "4 bit portable" like the first poster who i responded said. It's an 8-bit console.

And the limited colors isn't the reason the game in the OP looks like a garbled mess of random shapes.

Honest programmer art beats bad designer art though.

That's atrocious for PS4! My word... First gen PS3 games were pushing better visuals.

It's a orange box cat.

Look at me chase it around just like a real box cat:

E8WV8v.gif

Man, going to need some additional ram to run this game, whew, that's that Jaguar 50000 pixels per second tri-color coordinated 64-bit multi-purpose bus and draw bridge system at work!!

Have you ever seen a more realistic cat? Likely not, it's life like, these graphics are unbelievable, the math is all there. Did you see that Sky Box outside with the clouds? WOWZERS!

Yeah, that's the result of taking graphics that were designed for systems with a higher resolution and greater bit depth on the display and crudely downsampling them rather than redrawing them for the target hardware. It probably worked in a more or less acceptable manner on most platforms, but on the DMG it just ended up as a mess.

The graphics are not high tech even for Switch game, but it’s far from being “ugly”. I personally like the character designs in 3Houses.

Its just an ugly game in general. From the landscape to low poly character models. I enjoyed said game but it is an eyesore. A console first party game shouldn't look like this.
